The Bayou meets the Big Sky

Craig at MTPolitics has one of the major reasons why I’m jealous of people who live in MT posted up at his place.

Me, I only get homies in velvet around my house.

Unnecessary Updates

Update 1: Juan Cole is an complete, wuss (link via Ace)

Bush: “See, the irony is what they need to do is get Syria to get Hizbollah to stop doing this shit and it’s over.”

Cole: “It is a little window into the superficial, one-sided mind of the man, who has for six years been way out of his depth.”

“I come away from it shaken and trembling.”

Update 2: Jim K at Right Thoughts is not

I wonder if he knows how many people *OUTSIDE* of Washington politics and the media would literally praise his name if he stood up in the middle of the G8 summit and just let it fly.

“Listen Putin, you power-hungry fucking gasbag.  We appreciate what you do in the War On Terror, but if you think we’re all just going to sit back while you reform Communist Russia…you better hold your balls, big boy, because me and some of my friends will be coming to kick them soon. Now, Syria.  Syria, what the fuck?  Do you think we’re all stupid?  Look at me.  Do I look like a bitch?  Then why you tryin’ to fuck me like one?  Shut up, sit down and let your masters talk to me.

Hezbollah Handgun Choices

Is it just me, or do you also find that the first thing that leaps to your mind when you see the below pic (from Drudge) is:

 Hezbollah Ruger.jpg

…What the hell is Hezbollah doing with a Ruger P-Series?

I didn’t know Rugers sold well outside the US. Sure hope that doesn’t turn out to be the “handgun of choice” for the Party of God terrorists. If so, I’d want to short Ruger stock.

Dropped on her head?

I think that would be the only explanation as to why Barely Governor Gregoire decided to send a bill for $50 Million to US AG Gonzales to pay for the housing of illegal immigrant felons in the Washington State Prison system.

I can only reason that is as such because less than three months ago, Mexican President Fox took a tour of the state and spent a good part of the day with Barely Governor Gregoire and she had ample opportunity at that time to make serve him the bill.

And also yes, I know that the fed already just gives money to the states to partially cover the cost of jailing these felons, but I think that if Gregoire would do the right thing and make the local townships cooperate with the federal immigration folks, we would have fewer illegals in the state.

No more benefits from the state Dept of Social and Human Services (DSHS). No more in-state tuition discounts for illegal immigrants. No more city-wide mandates barring local police officers and deputies from asking a person’s immigration status.

And those would be just a start.

No state issued ID’s. No accepting of the Metricula Consular cards as ID. Barring illegals from opening bank accounts or getting loans in the state would be a good next step.

But because Barely Governor Gregoire was dropped on her head in the delivery room or shortly there after, she sees this as a way to bash the feds (who do deserve some bashing, just not from the likes of her), while ignoring the solutions she can and does control.

Stay Away

First, it was “World Diplomacy – Get as many people as possible involved and talk it out.”

Next came “We should use direct talks.”

Now, we have “Don’t get involved. Ignore it, and it will go away.”

For those paying attention, you know the first two situations as the loony left’s idea how THEY would handle things in regards to Iraq and North Korea, respectively.

The reasons for these are two fold: 1. It is exactly the opposite of what they perceive the Bush Adminstration doing, and 2. The left will deliberate to the point of inaction anything that will does nto further their socialist agenda, no matter the body count or the future consequences.

The third example is a quick boiling down of the stances from two of Progressivdoms leading bloggers about the fight Israel is currently in, as stated by both Markos Zuniga (aka: Grand Poobah of the Klueless Kos Kiddie Farm and Petting Zoo) as well as Kevin Drum (aka: Calpundit).

In fact, the number one reason that Drum uses as to why the left isde of the blogosphere doesn’t like to post anything about Israel is because the comments turn all out of control, but if last week was any indication, the only people who getout of control in the comment threads of the large left-wing sites are the anti-semites on the left. And we all know they don’t like letting that out in the public.

New Member of the Family

By now, I’m sure you have heard about my April vehicular aquisition of Grimm.

At the end of that post, I mentioned that the co-worker I purchased him from, Don, was also selling a couple of other trucks like Grimm for prices that could be considered kick-yourself-for-passing-them-up low.

Times at Don’s place have changed and he absolutely, positively needed to get rid of everything because he has decided to sell his place and move closer to work, where he will have less property.

So I, being the best opportunist I could be asked him about the one remaining mid-70’s F-Series truck he had. Which is how I ended up buying Fred.

P7160003.JPG

Fred is a 1975 F-250 Ranger XLT Camper Special Model.

The F-250 part is self-explanatory and the Ranger XLT is a paint and interior package. It is the Camper Special portion of that description that should catch your eye. That particular package was sold as an upgrade option for the 3/4-ton trucks, and if I remember the old brochures correctly, includes the 1-ton axle and springs, a four-core radiator instead of the three-core, an upgraded brake package and a more expandable electrical package for things like lights and trailer brakes.

Fred’s powerpant is the stout 390ci V-8 which transfers its power to the rear axle via a C-6 auto trans.

Fred is currently sitting under what I have in the past called “Grimm’s Backpack”, but will most likely become “Fred’s Backpack” due to the ride height of Grimm, which makes motoring around with it on Grimm quite “interesting” (SHTF plans have not changed, however, and Fred will be joining us if possible).

While Fred isn’t the prettiest truck, only the ‘yow’ in the fender you can see and a ‘bonk’ on the passenger side of the bed, keep his body panels from being perfectly straight.

And for $500, how can you turn down ‘ol Fred?

I also snagged up a spare 390 engine for a price too low to mention here and Don threw in a new-in-the-box tailgate, spare alternators, ignition modules, manuals and a bedfull of other F-Series parts he’s collected and never installed during his years as a ‘Ford Truck Guy’.

Don is also trying to not have to send his 79 Chevy 18ft Motorhome to the scrapyard, so if you’re looking for a decent SHTF famliy mover, leave a comment and I’ll give ye the particulars.

Voting for Da Judge

I don’t know how it is where you live, but here in King County and Washington, we elect our judges.

There are rules about campaign donations and the like which, if I remember correctly, are more strict than for other elected offices, and despite my reservations about the Supreme Court of Washington that I mentioned over the weekend, it seems a decent way of getting good people into necessary positions.

The races are all non-partisian, but you can, of course, find out how your available choices think by looking at who is supporting them with funding.

One of the silliest local things I’ve seen regarding local judicial elections is this from the very libreral (or is it ‘Progressive’) WashBlog.

Dennis Higgins writes about how his doorbell was rung by someone supporting a candidate who was getting funds from a ‘conservative’ organization of real estate developers and construction company owners.

If you want really decent comedy written as a serious left-wing rant, you should check it out. He wastes no time in claiming a conspiracy to *gasp* target only people who might possibly vote for the candidate *ungasp* and then delves into how the democracy that has placed the Democrat Party into power in all three branches of Washington State government is in jeopardy because there is “Big Money” involved.

Of course, he mentions no research into the campaign tactics of left-leaning judges looking to be elected, which means either that he believes there is no “Big Money” supporting them or that he is just be afraid of what he’ll find.

Don’t miss the comments section; full of more conspiracy and cries of democracy disappearing.

Who has the negative tactics exactly?

Click here and watch this video from the local NBC affiliate as one of their ‘investigative’ reporters does his 3-Minute report on how, for the last three months, the state Dems are following the Repub challenger for Maria Cantwell’s Senate seat, Mike McGavick, video taping every one of his public “Open Mike” campaign stops, looking for items to use against him.

McGavick is running closely in the polls with Cantwell, who has had to buy out the person who posed the biggest Democrat threat to her winning the primary just to look good.

The Democrat Machine is feeling a bit edgy about this race. As I’ve mentioned before, the hard-core Bush Derangement Syndrome people are refusing to vote for Cantwell because of her votes on Iraq, first to go and then funding. She has gotten her greatest Primary challenger to drop out (for $8k a month to ‘work’ on her campaign) so she’ll most likely win that, but the general election is still a tossup, and if McGavick keeps up the pace or even goes into overdrive, Cantwell could very well be out of a job come 2007.

Wholly Punched

You may remember back at the end of May I wrote a post titled “Whole Punch” about how the eco-socialist cult have ruined the recycling industry with their militantism (coincidentally, it was post #2020). Sadly, I now have to tell the tale of how that topic can become a bad one to bring up.

You see, there are some AlGore style ‘true believers’ at my place of employ. People who work there because we are the industry leader in recycling, not only in Seattle, but in most of the cities in the nation. A couple of them are drivers who, rather than take the ‘promotion’ to work in yardwaste or trash collection, choose to stay on a recycle route past their time. Mind you, they aren’t losing any money, they say that to them it seems like a better job.

One of the non-driving ‘true believers’ who works in the ‘Promotions’ department stopped by my office last Thursday morning before heading to do what I like to call her “recycling act” at a couple of the local elementary schools.

She said she wanted to see if there were any more recent numbers on the increase of recycling within the city, but she also chatted for over an hour to a couple of the other folks in the office, one of whose desk is next to where I sit.

As she sat on the desktop and talked to the lady there while facing towards me, she started in on how wonderful it was that the whole city was recycling and yada, yada, yada. Near the end, she asked me a question to which she knew I hadn’t the answer because I have nothing whatsoever to do with that department, and I decided that I’d move the topic back to the mandatory recycling and to how I thought it was disgusting that people are being fined for non-compliance.

She replied with the standard “It’s for their own good” speech to which I came back with that there was a whole set of new fees dropped onto people ‘For their own good’ with the city’s recycling program and that some of the people probably couldn’t afford it.

To which, I shit you not, she said “well, we’ll just have to give them some sort of subsidy to cover the cost”

She said it without hesitation or questioning the logic of it. After sitting there stunned for a second, I asked if we should also subsidize their trash, mentioning this upcoming rate increase so that the city can build a new transfer station.

She answered “Absolutely” and talked about other government programs to help people with their water, electirc and phone bills, and that seeing as how trash collection is a utility, some people should get that service paid for by the government as well.

I countered with the fact that electricity, water and phones weren’t mandated by the city, adding that neither was the most expensive city in the state mandating that people without means live here.

To which her only reply was that I was a racist.

At no time during the conversation was race brought up by either myself or her. But one mention from myself, asking why people who are perpetually without decent quantities of money are living in a town where property values are edging towards those in San Francisco, and she automatically thinks of black people, yet I am the racist.

No, there hasn’t been any fallout from this spat, I’m pretty sure that she just wanted to exit the arena. Which is really sad, because I wanted to move the topic to transportation and pollution issues. Mostly because she drives a 20 year old Honda Civic and, since I’ve seen the emmissions reports of both aging Civics and the newer F150s, I know that my truck runs cleaner per mile than hers does.

Maybe next time. I’d like to see her try the “Racist Runaway” on that one.

And I missed it

Of course.

Yesterday was the 61st Annversary of the Trinity Test, in which the first nuclear device built by the United States of America was exploded near Alamogordo, New Mexico.

While it was neither ‘Random’ nor a ‘Strike’, it is still a day to be remembered around these parts.

I’m still fiddling around with making room for tunage on the server, so if you would be so kind as to pull out your copy of Rush’s Power Windows album and spin track #3, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
