Beat the Heat

My goodness, I see that just about everywhere in the US is warm and/or damp.

Not to brag, but I’ve gone off again and went to a little place in the South Pacific with a new friend to try and cool off (and yes, I’ve gotten a replacement pair of shorts with me since my last pair were cut to ribbons).

Miss Bethany, on the other hand, doesn’t own a pair of shorts. At least not to my knowledge.

And they want to act surprised?

From Captain’s Quarters comes news that the makers of highly accurate firearms and watches, as well as some tasty chocolate, have just discovered that their nose high “Bot weer nootraal” attitude towards warfare isn’t going to save them from those with the message “Praise Allah or Die!”

For centuries, this Alpine nation has successfully relied on a strict policy of political neutrality to insulate it from the wars, invasions and revolutions that have raged outside its borders. These days, a new threat has emerged: one from within.

As they have elsewhere in Europe, Islamic radicals are making inroads in Switzerland. Last month, Swiss officials announced the arrests of a dozen suspects who allegedly conspired to shoot down an Israeli airliner flying from Geneva to Tel Aviv. In a related case, a North African man has been charged with organizing a plot from Swiss soil to blow up the Spanish supreme court in Madrid.

For years, even after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States, Swiss officials assumed that their country was one of the last places Islamic radicals would look to attack. Long considered a slice of neutral territory in a world full of conflicts, Switzerland trades on its status as home to the International Committee of the Red Cross and other diplomatic institutions.

Sorry to have to bother you there, Sepp, but we’re picking sides here and your skills would be appreciated on this team. The other team just wants to cut off your head.

Your choice.

Someone else was awake

Last weekend I posted about the Supreme Court of Washington’s rewriting of rules that attorneys in this state have to follow. Sadly, just as I wrote in the post, they legalized being an accomplice to perjury.

In the latter half of the post I wrote about what happened for me to loose all faith in the highest court in the state: their decision that beating someone to death isn’t murder so long as you say you didn’t actually mean to kill the person.

Lo and behold, someone else was as pissed as I was, but they didn’t blog it, the Seattle Times gave them one-day “Guest Spot”

Over the past few weeks, the public has read various opinions regarding our state Supreme Court. Clearly, some believe the court has demonstrated a lack of judicial restraint, while others maintain the court is a model of impartiality.

Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, but there is no arguing with the facts — the Washington Supreme Court has recently issued decisions that have freed convicted murderers and allowed government to confiscate people’s property.

I know this is cliche, but do READ.THE.WHOLE.THING, especially the part about property seizure.

Also, if you want to lose even more faith in the legal profession, go read the comments on the original post to see what about the California BAR made RNS co-poster, Meester David, feel slimy.

Do these officers work for VPC?

Joe Huffman asked a question very close to the title of this post in one of his posts which I can no longer find to link to, but it is a question I’d like answered nonetheless.

Homeowners once looking for protection, ex-hunters and wary parents were among those who pulled up to The Pyramid Saturday to unload their rifles, semiautomatics, shotguns and revolvers.

The gun turn-in program that ran throughout the day was held by the Memphis Police Department in cooperation with WMC TV-5 and Soul Classics 103.5.

Not intended to round up the firearms of lawbreakers, the event was aimed at law-abiding citizens who have the power to stop their own guns from falling into violent hands, said Sgt. Vince Higgins, spokesman for Memphis police.

“Ninety percent of the guns we get from criminals are stolen in burglaries,” said Higgins, who added that most of those guns are sold on the street.

“A criminal is not walking around with a gun that’s registered to him; it’s a gun he’s obtained illegally,” he said.

snip

Over the years, there have been several other gun turn-in programs in Memphis. They’ve resulted in collections that have ranged anywhere from 22 to more than 1,000 guns. In the first hour of Saturday’s collection, police had already cataloged 18 guns.

“If we get one gun that’s one less gun possibly used in a crime,” said Higgins.

Screw you Higgins. I’d be willing to bet that a goodly number of the ‘potential murder weapons’ you’re collecting don’t even operate and that in the future you’ll be visiting more than a few homes of the people who are showing up to collect their bribe.

The guys with the badges who talk to the press about how dangerous personal ownership of firearms is are a minority from every other officer I’ve known or been aquainted with.

That is, unless there is some large pool of these jackasses that only the media knows about.

Socialism Causes Injuries

Who knew?

Oh, that’s right, you and I did.

If you remember back in January, the Maryland Legislature set up and passed their “We Hate Wal-Mart” bill, making it so that Wal-Mart and only Wal-Mart would have to spend at least 8% of their payroll within the state of Maryland on healthcare or pay it in taxes to the state.

Seeing the black arm of socialism tighten its grip on the heart of the Constitution, US Judge J. Frederick Motz slapped some sense into the Marylander Pols by downing the law.

A federal judge on Wednesday overturned a Maryland law that would have required Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to spend more on employee health care, arguing the retail giant “faces threatened injury” from the law’s spending requirement.

The state law would have required large employers to spend at least 8 percent of payroll on health care or pay the difference in taxes. Only Wal-Mart would have been affected by the law.

However, U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz concluded that the law would have hurt Wal-Mart by requiring it to track and allocate benefits for its Maryland employees in a different way from how it keeps track of employee benefits in other states. Motz wrote that the law “imposes legally cognizable injury upon Wal-Mart.”

Good on ya, Your Honor. And thank you.

The headline read

Universal Healthcare Plan Approved in San Francisco

And the socialists rejoiced.

Later, a prediction was made:

Watch the end of 2009. Gavin Newsome is going to have to ask the Feds for money to cover this fiasco. If a Dem gets into the Oval Office, they’ll cover it too.

I couldn’t think of a better post title

Than the one Kevin Baker came up with.

And because I don’t want to steal it, I advise you to head over his way to read what someone who doesn’t trust themselves to own a firearm sounds like.

Oddly enough, the person in the discussion doesn’t sound batshit-crazy, just a little bit out of their mind.

But hey, at least they’re honest.

He Gets Mail

The Ace of Spades gets some freaky mail.

Like this one from the AP:

STORY OPPORTUNITY : Fans of Che Guevara – Associated Press (US) I’m looking for people who own ‘Che’ Guevara T-shirts, magnets, etc. Are you a Che fan? Why? Or is the image of his face just a cool icon to have? What does he represent to you? Why does he hold such mystique so many years after the Cuban Revolution and his death? Please include name, age, location and contact info. No phone calls, please. Contact [Name deleted]

If he wouldn’t have deleted the contact name, I’d have sent them a fictional tale that just about anyone would have found quite disturbing.

But alas, no.

In Middle East News…

This link from Debbie Schlussel was going around pretty widely yesterday, in which she said that ‘the majority of Americans in Lebanon are Hezbollah supporters and that US tax dollars shouldn’t be spent to evacuate them.’

Got an easy test for this: Have an Orthadox Jew stand in the helicopter or airplane door as a greeter, and if they refuse to shake his hand, they don’t get on the aircraft.

James Taranto notes that even Saddam Hussein thinks the ‘palestinians’ and Hezbollah are in over their heads

Toppled Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein has issued a warning to the Syrian leadership “not to go too far in its alliance with Iran,” blaming Tehran for the current flare-up of violence in the Middle East, the head of Saddam’s defence team claimed Tuesday.

“The president told us that the Syrian leadership should not go too far in its alliance with Iran, because the Persians harbour bad intentions for all Arabs and aspire to see them vanquished,” he said.

“The Israeli aggression on Lebanon and the Palestinians is a natural result for what happened to Iraq with Iranian backing,” Saddam reportedly said, alluding to the US-led invasion of Iraq that resulted in the ouster of his regime in April 2003.

Israel looks to raising a black flag of sorts in Lebanon. Good for them.

PM: Israeli plans do not include a cease-fire

Israeli officials said Tuesday their offensive in Lebanon could last several more weeks and involve large numbers of ground forces, casting doubt on diplomatic efforts to broker a cease-fire.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told a visiting U.N. delegation that “Israel will continue to combat Hezbollah and will continue to strike targets of the group” until captured Israeli soldiers are released and Israeli citizens are safe from attacks.

While it isn’t yet part of the Middle East, you can’t stop them from wanting to be.

From LGF contributor, Zombie, here is some video of a pro-Hizbollah rally outside the Israeli Consulate offices.

What is it about hoses?

No, not ‘hosers’. I said ‘hoses’.

Scenario: there is an unruly crowd outside a nightclub early on a Sunday morning in Boise, ID. Short of police officers to control the crowd and get them to disperse, the OIC called the local fire station to see if they could get an engine out there to whip out the firehoses and try to calm down the situation.

The Fire Captain on duty says no.

What is it about spraying people with firehoses and nearly everyone being afraid to use them as such?

Cold water works on mobs just like it does on teenage boys who could only get to second base; it takes all the testosterone goes right out of ya, yet no one gets hurt.

Oh sure, if you’re close enough, you could get some bruises, but I’d rather that than a P-38 nightstick upside the noggin.

Is it the whole Bull Connor thing?

Help me out here, I’m at a loss. The ACLU “cry to mommy” types are always screaming for the police to use non-lethal methods to deter violence, yet everyone is afraid to use this one?
