Ahh, Yes

The Announcement.

This Wednesday, November 1st*, will the wife and I’s fifth wedding anniversary. As because I took the week off to get married, I now take the same week off every year to spend it with her.

anniv1.jpg

As such, I shant be able to attend the blogosphere much during this time off and I have handed the reigns of the RNS Main Panel to our good man David, as you can see by his excellent posts below this one.

And now that we are done with the formalities, we shall thoroughly ditch the language.

OK, now, I’ll be in and around the sphere a bit, but I do have a couple of missions to care for this week (making sure the wife smiles a lot and getting items read for Afghanistan) so I will probably only pop in here with tunage and/or linkage. I don’t think the wife will take it well if I spend a good deal of time read/writing on the PC, so the links I toss up will just have short descriptions accompanying them.

I gather anywhere from ten to a dozen links a day, most of which get shitcanned, usually because I don’t have time to get all wordy at and after work. But I’ve kept all my links from last week and will figure out how to do a sort of shorthand post or something.

But not today. We have a minor emergency at home.

Polly the Big Ass Turtle has been rolling the rocks around in his tank and somehow managed to crack it. The leak is quite small, but it is still a leak. Unfortunately, the worst case scenario has come true and we have to dip into the emergency funds to buy a new one. That is second order of business.

The first order of business is to get some tunage posted up.

So here you go,

Love Gets Sweeter Everyday – Finley Quaye

A little bit of Rasta on this cold All Hallows Eve.

You can read about Finley Quaye here, and you can buy the album this tune came from here. While reading the former isn’t really all that important, buying the latter is very much so.

* – Yes, we consciously picked Dia De Los Muertos to get married. But only because a certain someone in the family objected to us doing the deed on Halloween. We said “OK, how about the day after” They said “All Saints Day? Of course!” and an agreement was reached.

You see, this way, when I see all the kids walking around in costume, I know I have to get an anniversary present. I may be forgetful at times, but I am not stupid.

Monday Knifeblogging

The NRA’s Christmas catalog showed up in my mailbox this weekend, and what fixed-blade knife do you suppose they chose this year as the proud bearer of the NRA logo?

Why, the RNS Favorite Knife, of course …

Beretta 92 Type M

Beretta with Cartridge.jpg

The year my wife and I moved in together, for Christmas I bought her a pistol. It was her Beretta 92 EL, which we’ve dubbed “Beauty” for obvious reasons.

In subsequent years, I bought her jewelry. It didn’t take long for her to make it clear that anything so personal as jewelry needed to be selected by her, not by me. And really, the same should have applied to the gun, because the standard Beretta double-column grip is just a little too big for her to execute a smooth double-action first shot without shifting her grip for the follow-up shots.

Well, I had a solution for that problem: the single-stack Compact version of the Beretta 92, the “Type M.” A single column of 9mm is pretty darn slim, and makes for a much smaller grip. (Click to embiggen — if you look close, you can see Lincoln in the memorial!)

For someone with smaller hands, this pistol is great! And yes, I know there are .45s out there that are almost as thin, but 9’s fine with us. The gun fits her hands much more comfortably, and she doesn’t have to shift her grip whether firing double-action or single-action. And as you can see, it’s not a whole lot bigger than my 9mm J-frame snubby.

All in all, it’s one of the best gun purchases I’ve ever made. They’re hard to find; if you run across one, check it out — you might like it a lot!

The Dumbest Thing I’ve Read All Day: 10/30 Edition

I found a copy of this book      Ecotage.jpg       in the garage over the weekend. I remember, many years ago, picking it up for a dime at the thrift store purchasing it at the fine establishment where I bought most of my books during law school. I got it because I enjoyed Robert Townsend’s Up the Organization, and his name’s on the cover. But I never got around to opening the damn thing and reading the contents.

Of course, once I did, I saw crap like this:

Float styrofoam crosses on polluted water — These would either be in memory of the dying body of water or call attention to dying species along its route.

B.S.

Lake Placid, New York

B.S., indeed! Refresh my memory, but isn’t styrofoam a non-biodegradable product? Doesn’t it contain all sorts of harmful chemicals? Wouldn’t this be kind of a hypocritical act, then?

Much of this book seems to be either self-contradictory garbage like the above, or evidence that an awful lot of people in the ’70s had absolutely no clue about how to effectively change either public opinion or corporate behavior. There are a few clever concepts, but most of the ideas in the book are at about the level of your typical high school or college prank. And gosh, we all know how effective those are at winning the hearts and minds of the townsfolk to the side of the merry pranksters. Sheesh. The past truly is a different country.

I’m sure glad I was only three years old when this book came out in 1972, so presumably I was blissfully ignorant of the zeitgeist it seems to exemplify.

Lateness

Holy crap, I almost forgot to post anything for today. Sorry about that, I’ve spent all night burning CD’s to send off to LT1 Chad and his guys.

I’m getting a rather larger than usual* sized care package built up for them. If you would like to join in the fun and lend a hand, just drop a note in the comments or via email and I’ll fill you in.

I’m off to buy foodstuffs and sundry items. I’ll have a notice up tomorrow to fill you in on next week.

* By larger than usual, I mean that it is larger than the ones I send off each month to a few different folks I know who are “away from home” currently. Since I hadn’t heard from Chad since around April, I need to get caught up.

Round and Round: Part 2

For the sole reason that they objected, on Friday afternoon I promoted another student into the Honors Program.

That’ll teach them to piss off the Prof!

A Long, Long Time Ago

On a blog not so far away from this one.

Actually, it was back in 2004 when we were using Movable Type. Those archives had to go bye-bye because of a need for server space.

Back then, I made the statement that France, and actually most of Western Europe, was a “Rouge Corpse” (I have also, more recently, said the same thing about San Francisco here).

For those not familiar with the term “Rouge Corpse”, it describes a dead body that has been extensively made up with cosmetics to look life-like. It was popularized in, of course, Fwance, during the mid-to-late 1700’s for members of the aristocracy.

I thoroughly believe that this describes Western Europe to a tee.

Not confining himself to a single sentence, Mark Steyn has written a book titled “America Alone: The End of the World as We Know It”.

Captain Ed links to an interview with Steyn talking about the tome here. Very good stuff.

Just a question

For Shakespeare’s Sister, the subject of yesterday’s “The Dumbest Thing I’ve Read All Day” post.

I wonder, if the “Sister” would buy her children this?

poledancekit.jpg

Tesco has been forced to remove a pole-dancing kit from the toys and games section of its website after it was accused of “destroying children’s innocence”.

The Tesco Direct site advertises the kit with the words, “Unleash the sex kitten inside…simply extend the Peekaboo pole inside the tube, slip on the sexy tunes and away you go!

“Soon you’ll be flaunting it to the world and earning a fortune in Peekaboo Dance Dollars”.

The £49.97 kit comprises a chrome pole extendible to 8ft 6ins, a ‘sexy dance garter’ and a DVD demonstrating suggestive dance moves.

The kit, condemned as ‘extremely dangerous’ by family campaigners yesterday, was discovered by mother of two Karen Gallimore who was searching for Christmas gifts for her two daughters, Laura 10, and Sarah, 11.

Ahh yes, because not only do 10 and 11 year olds have the right to go to school attempting to show their not yet existent “attributes”, they also have an absolute need to perfect their pole dancing skills for later in life.

Don’t get me wrong; I do not mind it when an adult female has “pole dancing skillz”. But if said adult female told me she learned how to do that when she was a pre-teen, I think I’d still have to question the parenting.

And, of course, if I objectify said adult female for her “pole dancing skillz”, she’s not a hoochie-mama trying to attract my attention, I’m just a sexist, woman exploiting pig.

Round and Round

I had the opportunity during the first week of classes to bump a student into the Honors program. Some of the other instructors at the Occidental Tush Institute disagreed, saying that I was getting too easy on the students.

spankable163.jpg

I countered their argument by reminding them that they also usually complain when I get hard on a student.
