A Tale of Two Shotguns, Part 1

A while ago I posted about how Tom Knapp now carries the elusive magazine extensions for the 20-gauge Benelli Novas. Tom Knapp.jpg

Benelli Extension Tubes With Ruler1.jpgHe sold me two of them, and in fact one of them came off of his own Nova. I thought I was getting two four-round extension tubes, but instead I got a four-rounder and a five-rounder. He even said so at right. No, I’m not going to frame the padded envelope with his signature like some gaga fanboy. (I’ll store it in Mylar and keeps it forever, my precious!)

Anyway, the other night I decided to sit down and install the things. It took me the better part of an hour. Why? Ever tried to compress a six-foot spring into a two-piece tube? You have to hold the gun with one hand while guiding the spring into the factory magazine tube with the other. You use the index finger of the first hand to hold the stuffed spring in place while the other hand gathers more of it to stuff into the tube. Then you run out of tube, because the extended spring just won’t compress all the way in, of course; so you try to hold this live snake in place with one hand while you fumble to fit the extended tube over the free end of the spring with the other hand. Then you have to compress the two tubes together until the threads meet and you can screw it shut. Go too fast, and the spring gets away from you and pops out like a Slinky. And you start all over.

With two pairs of hands, it’d be a snap. But my wife was laughing too hard and I was too damn proud to ask for her help with a widdle biddy spring.

Benelli Extensions Installed.jpgA pair of pliers might have been useful in all sorts of ways, but of course I didn’t think of that until later.Benelli Extension Connections with Clamps.jpg

Anyway, I got them installed, as you can see at left, but there were a couple of oddities. You’ll notice at right that I installed the barrel clamps on both guns very close to the thread connections, instead of out towards the muzzles. That’s because placing the clamps towards the muzzle resulted in the extension tube being tweaked at an upward angle. I may try it again sometime as I think the upward angle may have been my fault somehow; it just seems to me that the clamps should be installed further towards the muzzle to keep the threads from being stressed.

The other odd thing was the little raised projection at the end of the tubes. Benelli factory extension tubes are flat at the ends. These tubes, by contrast, look like this at the end:Extended Benellis on Floor.jpgBenelli Extension Tip.jpg

Here are the two guns with the extended mags. Note that the five-shot tube is longer than the barrel. I believe that’s a bit of a no-no, so I promptly threaded in a Comp-N-Choke (not shown) to effectively extend the barrel another couple inches. No cracks about the pink carpet, please! It came with the house; we’re going to rip it out next year and put in some honest wood flooring instead.

When Amphibians Go Homeless

He was in the aquarium equivalent of a tent for two days while we cleaned and set up his new one and cycled the water through.

But now, Polly is in his new (and redesigned) home.

FYI, the tank itself is 49x20x18, so yes, he is almost a foot long now.

Those Smelt won’t know what hit them.

The Soundboard: The Wife Chimes In

Seeing as how this is the day of our wedding anniversary, I decided (possibly poorly) to give the reigns of The Soundboard over to the wife for the day.

She wanted to select tunage that 1. Would never be posted here otherwise, and 2. Would break down the overt masculinity of RNS for the day.

Personally, I think our reputation may be ruined for longer than just the next 24 hours.

Have fun with it:

Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves – Cher

I post an anniversary appropriate song on Monday, and she basically hangs muave curtains around the blogstation in repayment.

Linkage, Schminkage: Day 1

Finally, a free moment to dump these links:

Here you will find a whiny so and so named Jordan who actually believes that if the unions were stronger, the number of employee deaths and injuries on the job would fall.

Nevermind that OSHA was created when unions were at their strongest and that as union membership declined steadily, worker injuries and deaths decreased, including the last few years as the national government was under Republican control.

If you go here you will find and excerpt of a book by Joan Burbick, author of Gun Show Nation: Gun Culture and American Democracy. Burbick contends that gun show attending males are not only afraid of their wives and ex-wives, but are just hatefilled neanderthals. I don’t attend that many gun shows these days, but in my teens I would go to a certain one in Puyallup every month. I cannot think of anything “hateful” there.

But then again, I’m not a bigot like Ms. Burbick.

At this link, the dKos dweebies have posted the parodies of those annoying “I’m a Mac/I’m a PC” commercials. Of course, in these spots the cool, hip Mac is a Democrat and the PC is a Republican (aren’t Republicans supposed to be the ones who aren’t “PC”?).

My favorite is the second one, the Dem can speak what I guess the Dems would call “Urban African American” while the Repub cannot. The Democrat, when introducing the “Urban African American” to the Repub, say “We’ve been through a lot together.”

It is true, they have been through a lot together. Like when the Democratic Party created their military wing to keep southern blacks in line. You may remember this wing of the party, it was called the Klu Klux Klan.

Or how about when the Democrats crafted the Jim Crow legislation? That was hoot. For the Dems, at least. I believe though, that the Dems are most fondly proud of their attempts to deny blacks their full civil rights in the 50’s and 60’s. All that voting against the legislation in the national Congress and making it necessary for Eisenhower to send the National Guard to public schools so that the black kids could attend with the white kids and all.

Brings them back happy memories. Just so long as everyone else forgets what they did so they can take the black vote for granted.

Well, that is enough linkage for today. I’ll have more tomorrow and on Friday.

What I did yesterday

We have the week off so the wife removed the exterior Halloween stuff from the boxes in the garage.

PA310008.JPG

I got to put it all out.

I also got to carve the pumpkins.

What do you need in your Vampire Kit? A Vampire Kit Gun!

AirLite 22 Right Side with Barami HipGrip.jpgBa-dum bump. (Do I get a No-Prize for Creative Use of a Halloween-themed Gun Pun? Anybody?)

Well, really. I mean, it’s the twenty-first century, for crying out loud. You think I’m going after vampires with a hammer and stakes? Dude, that’s so nineteenth-century!

No, what you need is some silver-coated bullets and a Model 317 AirLite Kit Gun from Messrs. Smith & Wesson. Dang thing’s as light as a ghost!

Slip it under your waistband with the Barami HipGrip (shown), and it’s light enough that even when loaded with a full complement of eight .22s, you can forget it’s there. Not to worry; there’s a cutout in the skeletal grip frame for a lanyard so you can hang it from your neck with your crucifix. And the light-gathering front sight sports that otherworldly green glow….

Note I mentioned silver-coated bullets. You don’t want to melt down Grandma’s silverware and pour it into bullet molds just yet! That’s because the Kit Gun is in .22 rimfire caliber, which, although it will get theAirLite 22 Left Side with Benchmade Rant.jpg job done in a pinch even on the usual Goblins, is not a cartridge any sane person would try to reload. No problem — where vampires are concerned, even a little silver in the bloodstream’s enough to do the trick, so you just need to dip your little lead pills in some molten Ag and you’re good to go!

Of course, even old-timey vampire hunters made sure the deed was done by cutting off the head after they’d staked the heart. To finish the job, you’ll need a knife, and the RNS Favorite Knife is up to the task. Shown above is the whole kit. Assemble yours today, before it’s too late!

Range Report below the fold….

RNS Slays the Evil Ones

What, you think I jest? Not so, young Skywalker! I personally killed one of Dracula’s Evil Minions with the gun from my Vampire Kit this past Sunday evening. It was after the time change, so what was usually the hour of dusk had suddenly become the dark of night. We were nestled in our Dogs.jpgsanctum by the hearth, our bones warmed by the first fire of the season against the dark chill outside, when our white Wolf and dusky Hound (at left) began a fearful clamor at the door. A Beast was without!

Steeling myself against the din, I loosed our faithful companions into the now-Stygian depths of the yard. As their spectral shapes vanished beyond the cone of the porch light, I wondered what lurked beyond. But wait! Something approached! A white shape from out of the gloom! Was it fiend or friend?
