Proof that they don’t actually care

With all of the weird winter weather over the past nine weeks a decent number of school days have been missed by the children in Washington State.

We’re currently having huge discussions in this state about how to improve the education system, most of them focusing on how to get more tax money out of the citizens and upping the per-child dollar amount spent.

But if you look at SB 5395, you can tell that they don’t really care abot teaching the students better, only about getting more money for the school districts to flush down the toilet.

The bill basically says that if there were scheduled school days missed because of “an unforseen natural event” that the schools do not have to worry about losing funding if they don’t schedule the kids to make up the days at the end of the year.

The state specifies 1000 hours of instruction per year (equalling 180 scheduled days of school) and then counts the students attending each for those days and hands out the appropriate amount of taxmoney. Normally, if the schools cannot fulfill their end of the bargain to teach the children during days scheduled, even if that means days having to be added to the endof the year, then the state cuts back on moeny to the school.

But not anymore, accordong to 4 Republicans and 4 Democrats in the Washington State Senate. This bill will come up before the Senate Education Committee next Wednesday, at which time we’ll see just how serious the members of that committee are about getting little Johnny and Suzie educated instead of off to vacation on time.

Link found at Sound Politics where commenter “Walters” had a very good point

If we don’t have a fixed number of days for students to attend, let’s just have school 3 months out of the year and have 9 months off. When you amortize $36,000 over 90 days, the teachers make $12,000 a month. And there’s no concern for the WASL as the kids will never pass it anyway. Education will be fully funded regardless of the number of days per year even if it snows.

Unless you want an education for your child.

More from Mr. Davis

How are we doing with rifle marksmanship? By Vietnam, wasn’t everything beyond 200 meters abandoned to crew-served weapons?

During Vietnam, troops pulled back from the line for R&R were tested to reveal that they could, on average, pump out 300 rounds a minute at a target 50 meters away at a rifle range, and they would average one hit per minute. During the American Revolution, the enemy advised their officers that even at over 200 yards the American riflemen will hit with their first shot, so officers should conduct themselves accordingly. Also that these riflemen could reach as far as 300 yards.

As flintlock riflemen can pump out a maximum of only four shots per minute, it is obvious that Vietnam troopers have 75 times the firepower of the flintlock riflemen of the Revolution. This is in terms of muzzle statistics. In terms of target statistics, the flintlock shooter has four times the firepower of the M16 user because he has the skill to make every shot hit and the M16 user cannot hit more than once per minute.

Do They Send Civilians to Leavenworth?

I have heard rumors of civilians who had been caught committing felony crimes on US Military property had been sent there in the past, but nothing recently.

In the ongoing case on the of disgraceful US Army Lieutenant, Ehren Watada (who accepted his commission after the start of OIF, but when his unit was called up, refused to depoly) had his defense properly tossed out of court on its ear, along with all of his circumstantial “witnesses” last week when the courts martial correctly ruled that Watada’s belief of OIF being an “Illegal War” and therefore his participation in it would be tantamount to committing a war crime was not a valid defense.

But that dis not stop his “witnesses” from holding their own little mock “tribunal” over the weekend at the Evergreen Community College (Tacoma Campus). You can read the live-blogging of it here, but to whittle it down to the meat of the matter; They first decided amongst themselves that Watada’s “Illegal War” defense was plausable, then proceeded to conclude that OIF was an “Illegal War”, which was followed by Watada’s aquittal at their hands.

Their contention is that the military court has no right deciding whether OIF is or is not a “Legal War”, even though by tossing out that defense for Watada, the courts martial disticntly decided that it was not their business to go about delcaring wars “Legal” or “Illegal”. However, the civilain “tribunal” couldn’t get that point though their thick skulls and released this statement: “If Lt. Watada cannot get a full hearing about the war’s legality in a military trial, then his case should at least be presented in the court of public opinion.”

The official site lists there having been 600 people in attendance which, if the numbers presented by other leftist groups in the past are any example, that means there were about 150 people there.

But that story is not what prompts my question in the title of this post?

It seems that Watada said something relevant to his case to members of the press, both freelance (Sarah Olson who writes at moonbat site, Truthout.Org) and MSM (Gregg Kakesako of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin) and the US Military Court has subpoenaed both of them to verify their work.

Needless to say, Olson is screaming “Freedom of the Press!” at the top of her lungs.

She got a piece into Editor & Publisher where she wrote the following:

A member of the press should never be placed in the position of aiding a government prosecution of political speech.

So now, if I could ask Ms. Olson one question, it would be: Is what Watada said was actually “political speech” if he himself is claiming that his reason for refusing to deploy is non-political?

In my mind, if the person in question does not consider his words “political” then, by default, no one else can claim that they are political, thereby making her stand against the subpoena from the courts martial irrelevant.

But she is bound and determined to get some sort of status out of this case, and if she has be held in contempt for her own set of double-standards, then in her opinion, so be it.

Anyone? Bueller?

So, will they send her to Leavenworth along with Watada or does she get to go to Club Fed?

Wise People Will Soon Die

That is the only logical conclusion that any intellectually honest person can come away with from these statements from Iranian President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Statement #1:

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Tuesday he did not expect a U.S. attack on Iran because there were plenty of “wise people” in the United States who would not let it happen.

Statement #2

“Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad… assured that the United States and the Zionist regime of Israel will soon come to the end of their lives,” the Iranian president was quoted as saying.

Of course, if you can find a who opposes any show of force against Iran, yet can be intellectually honest enough to admit that the above two statements equal the title of this post, they’ll be denounced as a “neocon wannabe” / “racist” by his fellows.

One Day Later

And one law dumber.

I told y’all about it yesterday, and today Beaverton residents have proof that their City Council thinks they’re stoopid.

Beaverton City Council approves toy gun restrictions

The Beaverton City Council listened to the pros and cons of a ban on replica guns in public places.

The council heard from several residents who had concerns about the ban. But most attending the hearing last night seemed to support it.

Council members are expected to do adopt the ordinance on February 26. Beaverton Police requested the ordinance after a series of incidents where officers drew their guns on teenagers holding what looked like real guns.

The ban is focused on airsoft guns, which shoot plastic pellets.

Under the proposed ordinance, anyone caught in a public place with a replica could be cited, similar to most traffic tickets.

Ooooh, a ticket! Take that, criminal!

La-De-Da-De–What?

Dig if you will this picture:

Mexico Holding 11 Iraqis With Fake Papers

Eleven Iraqis carrying false passports and heading to California were arrested at Monterrey’s airport, immigration officials said Monday.

Nine men, a woman and a two-year-old girl traveled from Madrid, Spain, to Monterrey, where they were detained Saturday, an immigration official said on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to speak publicly about the arrests.

None of the Iraqi citizens appear on terrorist watch lists and they told authorities they were Chaldean Christians trying to get to California were they would request asylum, the official said.

They are being held at an immigration detention center in Mexico City pending charges for using false documents.

So I’m reading through this article, somewhat PO’d that these folks think that they can sneak in through Mexico to America, until I get to this last paragraph and come to an abrupt stop:

Chaldean Christians have a sizable community in southern California and frequently try to enter the United States through Mexico, saying they face persecution in Iraq.

This is common? This is so common, that even FOX didn’t see fit to make a big deal of it, like everybody who didn’t know this factiod is an ignorant yokel living in a cave?

What-The-Fuck is going on with people wanting to ignore US-Mexico border immigration problems? I knew they were playing ostrich with the problem, but I didn’t yet think they were suicidal?

I know we’ve caught folks from the ME coming through before, and I knew that a goodly number of them have probably made a successful crossing and are in the country without our government’s knowledge, but to write things up in a story as if it were a ‘dog-bites-man” report is irresponsible.

RNS Quote of the Day: 01/23/07

I was too busy crossing the ‘I’s and dotting ‘T’s on the By Ourselves post yesterday to remember to post these up, hyuk-hyuk.

FIrst, the quote:

Rifle marksmanship is a civilian attribute which is alien to the military environment. It must be introduced into the military by force and can be kept in the military only by ongoing active measures, else it will be eradicated and replaced by equipment familiarity.

14th Iron Law of Marksmanship – Darryl Davis

All that I know about Mr. Davis is that he is a writer. His book “Rifle Marksmanship: 130 Years of Malignant Neglect” is currently so far out of print that I have had to opt to write him directly to try and find a copy. So far, I have not had any luck with that line either.

You can find other literature from Mr. Davis via Amazon.Com in the form of “E-Books” , which are downloadable. The majority of these articles are reprinted with permission from the Marine Corps Gazette, though some are from Military Magazine. All are on the same subject of marksmanship in the United States Armed Services.

Unfortunately, as you can tell by hitting that link, there is more than one Darryl Davis, and you will have to forage through some useless pap to get all of his articles. Money is a bit tight right now, but when I am able, I will begin downloading these. For now, I have three quotes pulled from Boston’s Gun Bible that I will be posting today, tomorrow and Thursday.

After a fruitless search for more than the three Boston’s quotes, I finally stumbled upon a link to Mr. Davis via this page on World War I Medal of Honor Awardee, Captain Sam Woodfill.

When I wrote asking the author of the page, Mr. Hanlon, about Mr. Davis, his return email had a link to something I think at least a few of you all might be interested in: Over the Top: A Magazine of the First World War.

Again, I’m still short of funds, but I am thinking about subscribing to this monthly PDF file. You should go take a looksee as well.
