On a side note

About the post on Generators from yesterday, I did have some info on CNG and Propane fueled electrical generation systems, I just didn’t include it because I was not finding that it was common enough to post up. However, with a good deal of following of semi-obscure links, I have been able to find more on the topic. If you’ll give me another couple days, I should be able to flesh it out and have a Part 2.11 up for your reading pleasure.

As David pointed out in the comments, diesel generators are pretty much a no-go in the state of California. So, for all yous guyz lucky enough to be outside of the aforementioned socialist republic, follow this link:

Warning: The following site requires registration with the federal government to purchase items.

Government Liquidation

Warning: Packrats need to stay away from this site. You can fill up your garage and the garages of your friends and many, many storage units with stuff that you can buy here. Trust me on this.

But if those warnings don’t scare you, then take a looksee at these examples of large diesel generators on 3/4-ton trailers

15KW Joint Electronics GenSet

Has water damage and is being auctioned out of Louisiana. I wonder if it has been used for any kind of emergencies down there lately?

$600

10KW Libby Corp GenSet

Is missing the governor and has a moderately bent tongue, but can be towed. Richmond, VA.

$180

How about a turbine powered GenSet?

10KW Tiernay in Pennsylvania

The bidding will start at $50

Don’t need anything that large, try this lot of 3-EX1000 Honda generators at Ft. Bragg

Bidding will also start at $50

While these, especially the larger ones, may not be fully operational, they can be bought for half a song, brought home and made to run. Even if you spend $1000 on one and, for some reason, have to spend another $4000 repairing it, you still have an $18000 portable genset for $5000.

Just click on the first link and search the bases in your state for items they have for auction. If you don’t mind driving, check your surrrounding states (I do WA, OR, ID and MT).

Other cool items currently for sale:

This Rotax powered Harley scout bike at Malmstrom AFB, MT.

Rotax.jpg
Ft. Lewis, WA has nine, count them, NINE Zodiac boats w/o motors up for bid.

Lewis also has six of these in various guises and in various states of drivability.

General M813A1.jpg
This is the most expensive one. It runs and can be driven off the lot.

$3600

It is a good thing to know (or be) a diesel mechaninc.

I have a problem with surplus auctions. Or, I should say, the wife has a problem with me looking at surplus auctions. I can see 100 different uses for 500ft of 1 inch rope and 20 different uses for 90ft of 3 1/2in mooring line. It was bad enough when I just had my 1/2-ton truck, but now that I own a 3/4-ton with a receiver hitch, I’m absolutely dangerous.

I can blame my dad for this addiction. I’ve been going to these since I was eight or nine, when they just mailed out xeroxed flyers every month.

But buyer beware: the Uncles Sam is not one to be lax with. If you don’t speak “Militarese” and read the description improperly, you’re still stuck for the cash. Also, if you don’t pick it up on time, they have some of the most expensive real estate in the country, at least according to the storage fees they’ll be charging you.

But I would encourage you to take a look around. I’m currently looking at a set of three, still in the wrap, on the pallet, never been filled, 55gal drums as well as a storage container.

Just don’t tell the wife, mmmkay?

For the Childwen

Last week, Alphecca posted about how the anti-gunshow crowd in Virginia was writing speeches for 11 year olds to try and get their legislation passed. He titled it: Gun Control – Do it for the Kids!

If the anti-gun crowd in Washington has their wishes come true, they’ll be saying the exact same thing very soon

Boys believed to be 7 and 10 years old rob woman at gunpoint

King County sheriff’s deputies are searching for two children who allegedly mugged a 56-year-old woman at gunpoint in the Skyway neighborhood last week.

The boys, estimated by the victim to be around 7 and 10 years old, walked up to the woman on a sidewalk near 74th Avenue South and South 116th Place at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday and the younger boy pulled out a gun and demanded her purse, said sheriff’s Sgt. John Urquhart. The pair took the purse, which contained credit cards and about $130 in cash, Urquhart said.

The woman, who hasn’t been identified, wasn’t hurt.

It probably won’t be long before these two little turd-burglars try this again and get caught.

Currently, no one knows if it even a real gun, but if it is, we can expect the gun-bigots to start blaming the inanimate object in the crime and not the two little angels or the parenting skills of their legal guardians.

If it is not real, I’m sure we’ll hear cries like this one out of Oregon

Beaverton police want partial ban on fake firearms

A public hearing tonight is being held by the Beaverton City Council on a proposed ban of replica guns in public places.

Beaverton Police requested the ordinance after a series of incidents in which officers drew their guns on teenagers holding what looked like real firearms.

The ban is focused on Airsoft guns, which shoot plastic pellets.

Because criminals will follow this law, even while they simultaneously break numerous other ones.

It Appears

That the effectiveness of Minutemen Border Watch Project got somebody’s attention.

An individual or group of individuals commits domestic terrorism if the individual or group of individuals are not affiliated with a local, state or federal law enforcement entity and associate with another individual or group of individuals as an organization, group, corporation or company for the purpose of patrolling to detect alleged illegal activity or to individually patrol for the purpose of detecting alleged illegal activity and if the individual or group of individuals is armed with a firearm or other weapon.

I’d gotten this in an email from the brother of my co-worker, Paul, who is actually down on the border, but had mistakenly sent it to the spam folder while doing my Friday cleaning, so I’m glad that The Heartless Libertarian had links up to this post at Traction Control.

While I agree with HL on his thoughts as to what would happen if this passes, I forsee that the only group who would be forcibly disarmed along the border would be the Minutemen. The illegal aliens who run drugs will still be free, if not legally allowed, to carry their firearms.

Shhhh

That is what someone needs to tell the American Library Association when they gather at their latest convention this week in Seattle.

It seems that rather than saying even one bad word about fidel castro as he jails and tortures dissident librarians (and everyone else, for that matter), they would prefer to just push their demented “Impeach Bush Resolution“.

It is an odd wonder why they think people actually take them seriously.

By Ourselves, For Ourselves: Part 2.1

My apologies for taking so long to get this posted. Once you get towards the end of this, I think you’ll see where I got stuck. Anyway, shall we continue….

In Part 2.0 we discussed some of the items you’ll need to have at home when times get difficult. Today, we will talk about one that matters a great deal, but which most folks take for granted.

Electricity

Unless you’ve already taken steps to get yourself off the electrical grid (wind, solar, hydro generation), the electricity coming into your house is created and supplied to you by “Someone Else”. If you are off the grid, you certainly don’t need me to tell you the who-whatsit.

Whomever that “Someone Else” is, they have no responsibility to keep your lights on beyond their want to charge you money. Just as the police have no responsibility to protect you, the electric company will only suffer a minor loss of income and some bad press for not keeping the juice flowing.

So when things get ugly in the real world, you will not know how long you will be in the dark and without food refrigeration because the extent of the resources to restore your electricity are finite, while the number of things that can go wrong with the supply are quite numerous.

From a trees falling to vehicles crashing and taking out a supply line to transformers going pop, either due to overload or to someone intentionally taking them out, it is sometimes almost a small wonder we have a day-to-day working grid at all.

In order to make sure that you aren’t left in the dark with spoiled food, you will have take into consideration one or both of the following choices: 1. Making your own electricity, and/or 2. Storing your own electricity.

New Tires AAR

Just an FYI for those who think they might want to be jealous: So long as the local weather stays nominal and no unexpected holidays pop up, this week will be the first week since the one before Thanksgiving that I have worked 5 days in a row.

With Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day all falling so closely together, and then the first snowstorm, followed by the windstorm, then followed by the second snowstorm, the largest number of days I have worked in a row since the third week in November was three.

The only holidays “Sanitation Engineers” do not pick up on around here are Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. That accounted for three weeks worth of split work weeks. If my worksite had no power, I didn’t work. Those counted for two weeks. Then the windstorm closed enough neighborhoods and we had enough drivers staying home to do repairs to knock us out for another week. And then the two snowstorms shut us down for at least one day per week for three weeks.

If the drivers don’t roll, I don’t get paid to punch in, so I don’t. Don’t be jealous. The working of Saturdays and Sundays was killing my sleep schedule and when asked how I’m doing, my usual answer as of late is “just tired”.

But on a good note, both the wife and I made it through Snowpocolypse 2007 with nary a scratch and I got to test out those new treads I was bragging about.

Let’s see here: First we got 6-7 inches of the white powdery stuff which turned into brown slushy stuff after six days of hardpacked, almost clear slick stuff. The freeways were pretty clear, with only small patches of black ice, but in my end of town, the hilly one with zig-gagging streets where no state or county DOT truck dared to tread for the first three days, we had one-to-two inches of compacted ice. It had a white frost across the top of it, but once you gave it some friction, it cleared right up and you could see the asphalt through it.

The Yokohama A/T-S (255/70-16) tires I bought just a week earlier worked spectacularly. The above link to the home-video of me clearing off my truck’s windshield was supposed to have been followed by footage of the wife and I going to the store moments later. However, there were some “Hardware Interfacing” issues (I didn’t hit the REC button) and all was lost.

The tires hit the white fluffy stuff and made it run away. Whatever didn’t run got squished and used for traction, the widely separated lugs clearing themselves very well for the next go-round.

While technically not a “snow tire” or “studable”, the compact ice was not much of a problem either, provided I kept my head about me. What they did very well was telegraph to my steering wheel and gas and brake pedals exactly what was happening so that I knew what to do next. I have upgraded the steering, suspension and braking systems to the point where the truck is almost annoying to drive because of the amount of feedback, but it saved my bacon during this time.

After five evasive maneuvers to avoid my fellow Washington drivers, I stopped counting. I dodged oncoming traffic crossing the centerline, people behind me not able to stop in time, and people in front of me not able to make it up the hill and sliding back towards me. I stayed out of ditches and yards and off the sidewalks with not so much as a hiccup from these bad boys.

And, unlike past tires I’ve had on this truck, there was no modulation of tire air pressures necessary.

10 out of 10 for these tires. Highly recommended.

Speaking of people out of control, check out this vid from Portland’s time on the ice. These folks could definitely use both some better tires and some driving lessons (yes, one of the hills within 6 blocks of me looked just like this).

Note: At around the 40 second mark, you can hear some woman explain/yell that she has “Three children under five in that car and someone has to get them out!” I almost pity this woman for being that stoopid. Seeing as how children under five years of age are NOT able to motivate themselves with any reliability under normal conditions, let alone on ice, and that they probably are NOT dressed well enough to stand out in below freezeing temperatures for any length of time, the fact that the speeds involved are UNDER 5MPH means that the safest place for them is INSIDE the car.

But hey, no one has to take an IQ test to squirt out three human infants. Unfortunately.

Spinning The Loss

A few weeks back, our good man David posted a warning that leftists and their accompanying economists may try to blame some or all of any economic slowdown on the foreclosure rate of “sub-prime” mortgages.

However, if you watch the Lame-Stream-Media, you’ll notice that since the Democrats took over Congress, the US economy isn’t do so badly anymore. In fact, some are attributing the 3-Year high in the Consumer Confidence Index on the lack of hue and cry about how badly the economy is doing (oddly enough, since approximately around mid-November).

Which is why, when I saw the following post at the dKos Petting Zoo and Animal Farm, I knew the left would be trying a their favorite tactic of blaming the lenders (aka: Big Business).

dKos Diarist “bonddad” links to a CNN Money article about how “sub-prime” foreclosures are up 35% from December 2005. He puts his dKos filled brain to the problem, and as is usual for his ilk, comes to the wrong conclusion.

These loans account for 30% of loans sold in 2005 and the first half of 2006.

So — how were these products sold? In recent Congressional Testimony (see page 3-4), the General Accounting Office made the following observations about Alternate Mortgage Products (AMPs).

1.) AMP lending tripled over the last three years.

2.) Lenders relaxed lending standards

3.) Borrowers may not understand all the risks of AMPs because the documentation is complicated, poorly written and advertised inappropriately.

Another noted, “Increasingly, these products are marketed as affordability products… which is to say potential borrowers could use these products to afford larger homes.”

All of the things he noted are true. However, he forgot to note that no one is being forced to sign their names to these “sub-prime” mortgages and that if one were to look deeper into his links, these reports mention exactly that. Why can the left not blame an individual for something as simple as defaulting on a contract?

Yes, the legalese in a mortgage contract is difficult for the majority of Americans to understand, but guess what; if you’re buying a house or property and can afford $20+ thousand dollars for a down payment, forgive me for not shedding a tear about you not spending another $1000 on a fucking lawyer to go over the contract with you.

I am still renting because, due to a moderate credit hit from identity theft a few years back, I’m not only left paying off someone else’s fun and fighting with lending companies I never signed a contract with to get charges and ratings removed, but having to face lenders who will only offer me precisely these “sub-prime” mortgages. I refuse to pay any more than I absolutely have to in charges and interest on a house, and I waited and am still waiting, through historically low interest rates for my credit rating to go up before I sign my name on any dotted line for something worth six of my yearly wages.

If someone wants to jump the gun buying a house and then jump the shark with their mortgage payment, that was entirely their fault and I could give less than a rat’s asshole about the rise in the percentage of foreclosures of stupid people. AND, I most certainly will not let some bleeding-heart jackass use my taxes to “back-up” these people. It is called responsibility and the leftists need to look it up.

I foresee a levelling out of the foreclosure rates in the not-to-distant future (in 6-8 months). I’m not an economist, nor am I an expert on the subject of mortgages; I just believe that the market is thinning itself and that the folks who either couldn’t make their payments or couldn’t refinance are getting weeded out.

But this absolutely will not stop the Congressional Democrats from attempting to push legislation that will “guarantee” these “sub-prime” mortgages with your’s and my tax dollars.

Mark this post and come back to it either near the end of this session of Congress or shortly after the beginning of the next one. The left has already gotten numerous people to believe that housing is a right and certain Euro countries, France being the most recent, are passing legsilation that will guarantee housing to everybody within their borders.

Personally, I think a debtors prison should count as “housing”. But then again, I’m thought of as “Uncouth”.

If they didn’t have a Double Standard

They wouldn’t have any standards at all.

The Samizdata Illuminatus points to a Democratic Underground Message Board (DUMB) conversation about how great it is that Venezuelan Dictator, Hugo Chavez, is living up to the title.

If you don’t have boots high enough to enter the DUMB fever swamp, at least go read SI’s summarization and the subsequent comments.

Fred Thompson for President!

thompson_big.jpgNo, he’s not running (yet). But savvy observers are noting he’s keeping his name recognition up there.

I have absolutely no idea of his position on RKBA issues, except that he couldn’t possibly have been elected to the Senate from Tennessee without being 2nd Amendment-friendly. UPDATE:  I guess he was on the NRA’s Winning Team at one point, so that settles that.

As noted in the link, he’d sure be a better choice than the flip-flopper, the closet liberal, or that other guy who won’t win the nomination. Read the whole thing if you don’t recognize those three gentlemen.

Could he beat Hillary? Yeah, I think he could.
