Sunday Book Review: Michael Bane’s Trail Safe

The full title is Trail Safe: Averting Threatening Human Behavior in the Outdoors. There are four points to recommend it:

1) It’s a practice manual on applying principles of personal defense to outdoors situations. In that, I think it’s unique.

2) In addition, it’s a well-written argument that self-defense in the outdoors is appropriate.

3) As an argument, it is direct, unapologetic, and logically leads the reader step by step to its conclusion, but because it is written in a conversational style it is nonthreatening and accessible to everyone — including environmentalist tree-hugger types.

4) It’s available for free online! Right here!

I had a really hard time finding a paper copy; I suppose Wilderness Press is not going to be printing any more now that the book’s hosted online for free. In print it’s 176 pages; Bane’s breezy conversational style makes it a very quick read. Lots of good nuggets in those pages, too.

As a practice manual, it lies somewhere between Cooper’s Principles of Personal Defense pamphlet and Massad Ayoob’s The Truth About Self-Protection in terms of the amount of detail presented. Much of what’s discussed may be old hat to the readers of this site, although it’s an excellent refresher. Accordingly, I think this book’s greatest value for our purposes may be as the book that you slyly suggest to non-gun-owners or leftist tree-huggers of your acquaintance. Point out this link to them before their next camping trip or hike.

Next thing you know, they may come to ask you about buying a gun for self-defense. Time for another happy dance!

Who, What, Where, When, Why, How: Part 4

As I finish deciding what I’m going to say to the lady, I stand and attempt to walk towards her. I say ‘attempt’ because after gaining my feet, I immediately feel a shock in my lower back and fall to the floor.

As I lay there at the edge of the breaking point of shouting to ask just what the hell is going on, I feel a warm touch on the back of my head.

I look up and the first lady is now back in the room and dressed again. As she walks past me from the general direction of where both the pain and the touch to my skull came from, she says very calmly without looking at me “Now, now Professor. You really do need to stop hurting yourself. Why don’t you just calm down and wait for your ride?”

spankable178.jpg

Apparently, I am not allowed to ask who will be giving me my ride, since when I opened my mouth to ask who would be giving me the ride, the pain comes into my back again. I reach back and feel a pair of wires protruding from above me left hip.

They Say

That a picture is worth a thousand words

StalinLBJKohlWelles1.jpg

Since this picture concerns Washington State Democrats talking about election reform, I have just about that many four-letter words for them on their chioce of background photos.

That pic is not photoshopped. Here is a link to the video.

Notice the two photos on the stand on the left: The Butcher and the only known President to have ever legitimately stolen an election.

These assholes don’t even know who they’re talking about.

Also from Sharkansky come the news that Washington State House Democrats (and only the Dems) have fired up a bill to give felons the right to vote.

HB-1473: Changing requirements for the restoration of the right to vote for people convicted of felonies

Now, I have said in the past that if a felon has served their sentence fully, including having payed any and all fines and/or restitution, and been a good boy/girl for at least five years (though I would prefer ten), they can then file to get their voting rights restored.

That is definitely not what is in the Democrat sponsored plan. From Sharkansky’s post:

This bill goes farther than any other felon voting proposal I’ve seen, allowing all felons to vote, except for those who are under “total confinement in the custody of the department of corrections or the federal bureau of prisons”. So criminals with suspended sentences, under house arrest, out on parole, in county jails, even those owing restitution to victims they have robbed, defrauded, beaten up and raped, would be allowed to vote.

They just rode “The Blue Wave” into the majority, how fucking desperate are these people for votes?

Who, What, Where, When, Why, How: Part 3

Notice: I am receiving these from the Professor at very odd intervals. Today’s arrived last Monday and tomorrow’s on Thursday. All attempts to contact him are for naught; he isn’t at OTI or any of the other schools he frequents. I’ve checked all of the OTI properties and none of the staff there have heard from him and if he has flown in the past two weeks, there is no record of it. While I generally don’t bother worring about the guy, I’m beginning to wonder if maybe he got too deep into some badness.

However, if he still has his camera, I figure it can’t be too bad, yet. I’ll keep y’all updated whenever I get any new info.

And now, I guess we’ll continue on with what he sent…

——————-

I tried walking up behind the nice lady with the gravity furniture, but I was rebuffed and pointed to a seat matching the one she had climbed into.

I felt a small pinprick on the underside of my thigh and, in what seemed an instant, though I could not say for sure, the lights went out. When I was able to see again, it was in a way that I was completely unfamiliar and rather painful. Also, my new lady friend was gone.

Again, I could not tell you whether it was a minute or an hour later, a new young lady walked into the room and smiled.

Odd vision or no, I knew I had to at least try and engage this one in conversation.

Even this Lefty Columnist Understands

the Democrats didn’t win last November. The Republicans lost. And it was necessary for the Democrats to show that they could do something, that they could run something beyond a two-car funeral.

RNS Quote of the Day: 01/19/07

Corresponding with Rule #11 of the USMC Rules for Gunfighting

Anything worth fighting for is worth fighting dirty for.

Author Unknown

As I wrote yesterday, next week we’ll be talking about marksmanship, particularly in the US armed forces. You might want to familiarize yourself ahead of time with a man named Darryl Davis.

Voters said that they wanted change

And boy will they get it.

Here, Captain Ed reminisces about the high gas prices of last summer, and then segues into how his local price at the pump was well below $2 per gallon.

Gas prices were going down for weeks before the election due to a glut in the market, and they are continuing to do so. But not for long.

You see, the House Democrats just voted to raise gas prices for you, because they know you like that kind of thing.

The House bill, approved 264-123, sets a conservation fee on oil and gas from the Gulf of Mexico, attempts to recoup royalties lost because of a government error in drilling leases in the late 1990s, and rolls back several oil industry tax breaks.

“In the November election, the American people signaled their wish for change — a wish for our country to go in a new direction,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Remind all of your Democrat voting friends and neighbors that they are the ones who voted for change, and that change will leave them with little to spare.

BTW, I had to go to Captain Ed’s place to find someone talking about lower gas prices because, here in Washington, we haven’t seen any drop in price due to the Democrat’s donkey pulling the eco-socialist cart for “specialty gasolines” which cost much, much more to manufacture.

I don’t know

How she can still stay in NYC.

For those that don’t stop by Alarming News regularly and haven’t heard, Karol walked into her corner drug store the other night and into an armed robbery.

She recounts her story here.

Apparently, NYC Mayor Bloomberg, along with his less-than-legal attempts at entrapment, will be trying to fight crime by cutting the number of people who have concealed weapons permits.

To which Karol replies here with her usual cutting wit:

It’s funny, the guy who was robbing the Duane Reade didn’t have his weapon concealed at all, and I surely doubt he has a permit for it.

It is lucky that Paul Sorvino was in Vermont when he had to use his pistol to hold his daughter’s violent ex-boyfriend at bay until the police arrived because, as Alphecca points out here, Sorvino’s NY permit is expired.

Make sure you hit that Alphecca link to see just how well the criminals who deal with the law know the law.

More Hanging Around With Retards

Last week I posted about how Kos, head pig at the dKos Animal Farm and Petting Zoo, had to threaten to ban the 9/11 Truthers from his site if they spoke up with their theories.

This week, John Amato of CrooksAndLiarsBlog fame had to have one of his goonies drop the hammer on the Truthers:

This is Nicole. The site team wanted me to remind our readers that this thread deals ONLY with Colbert’s interview with D’Souza and that any and all 9/11 alternative theories brought up in response will be deleted in their entirety.

On a similar note, while the C&L Blog folks are, thankfully, shutting of the opinions of the certifiably stupid, at least one of them is getting all dreamy-creamy over Ding-Dong Dennis Kucinich’s attempt to bring back the so-called “Fairness Doctrine”

Oh, I love this. LOVE it. I can’t think of anything that would derail the right wing noise machine than bringing back the Fairness Doctrine. Can you imagine how much Fox News would have to revamp their programming? It would be unrecognizable. And get this: Tim Russert might actually have to invite Democratic officials on Meet The Press! The mind reels at the possibilities.

She links to an FMQB article with this Kucinich quote in it

Kucinich said in his speech that “We know the media has become the servant of a very narrow corporate agenda” and added “we are now in a position to move a progressive agenda to where it is visible.”

It is very subtle, but did you catch how truly twisted Kucinich’s comparison is in that quote?

He basically says that his political agenda, the “Progressive” one, is better than any corporate agenda.

Wow, I’ve never really squeezed my brain through that small of a straw before. No wonder the leftists are always angry.

Never mind that it is his “Progressive” agenda that is the narrow one. The one which believes that any point of view other than his needs to be “balanced” with what he thinks, instead of letting people choose what they want to listen to via the market.

The “Progressive” point of view is so unwanted that it deserves government subsidies now?
