Fred Thompson’s Running

Robert Novak’s known for reporting the straight scoop on what’s really going on in the political sphere, the Plame mess included. So I think we can take this column as gospel:

[Thompson]  privately assures friends that this is for real. His performance on “Fox News Sunday” was no accident. He went on the program for the purpose of unveiling his possible candidacy.

…

Friends bet Thompson will run. He clearly wants to try, and his wife, Jeri, is all for it. Seeking the best timing, he wants to avoid the pitfalls encountered by Democrat Barack Obama, who may have damaged himself by starting his campaign too quickly.

Oh, I can’t wait….

The Deal

Three things which lead to “The Deal”

A. I have this EOTech Holosight sitting around doing nothing. I used to have it on one of my shotguns, but I’ve outgrown that phase.

B. Another phase I’ve somewhat outgrown is the use of a 12ga for “inside the home” defense purposes. It is still a reliable platform with genuine uses, such as “inside the home” defense, but I’ve been looking for something else.

C. As the “gun guy” at my place of employ, one of my co-workers asked me about AR-10s.

And now for the long story:

By Ourselves, For Ourselves: Part 5

We have, in this series, been talking about getting yourself, your family and your home ready for a semi extensive bunkering during difficult times, such as natural disasters and terrorist attacks. Today, were going to deviate from this line of thinking a bit.

You aren’t always at home. You go to work, to the store, to the homes of friends and relatives, etc and you will need a plan for if you get caught away from your home in a natural disaster (or terrorist attack) so that you can get back to your home, even if it only going to serve as a supply base.

Remember, your vehicle is an extension of your home, legally, in most states. George Carlin has an entire skit on versions of your stuff? He uses vacations as his example.

So let’s just say that you’re at your local hobby shop BSing the Saturday afternoon away, as is your wont.

Mother Nature acts up and you are now away from home during and after an earthquake of decent magnitude. Your wife and kids are at home, 20 minutes away (or at least you’re pretty sure they are). But we’ll get to that in a minute.

If your hobby shop is a gun store then you are probably in pretty good shape. If you’re known well enough there, the owner may even lend you whatever you need in the way of firearms and ammunition to get home (this is why the gun shop is better than the tackle shop).

However, you may be at the computer store or the auto shop or the coffee shop, in which case you’re going to have to “run what you brung”. So let’s discuss this.

RNS Quote of the Day: 04/02/07

Joe Huffman’s brother sent him a link to this Mark Steyn piece. Joe posted it as his QotD from it and I’m stealing it because it is just that good.

Back when nuclear weapons were an elite club of five relatively sane world powers, your average Western progressive was convinced the planet was about to go ka-boom any minute. The mushroom cloud was one of the most familiar images in the culture, a recurring feature of novels and album covers and movie posters. There were bestselling dystopian picture books for children, in which the handful of survivors spent their last days walking in a nuclear winter wonderland.

Now a state openly committed to the annihilation of a neighboring nation has nukes, and we shrug: Can’t be helped. Just the way things are. One hears sophisticated arguments that perhaps the best thing is to let everyone get ’em, and then no one will use them. And if Iran’s head of state happens to threaten to wipe Israel off the map, we should understand that this is a rhetorical stylistic device that’s part of the Persian oral narrative tradition, and it would be a grossly Eurocentric misinterpretation to take it literally.

RNS Quote of the Day: 3/31/07

The late Don Thompson always had a way with words:

Some people will whine over anything: Dave Barry recently wrote a hilarious column about men who lament that they were subjected to an operation immediately after they were born. There actually is an organization of these poor saps creebing and moaning about how they have had to go through life with only a threeskin.

Malcontents are always among us. Some people would complain if they were being hanged with a new rope.

–Don Thompson, editor, Comics Buyer’s Guide “Oh So!” letter column, January 31, 1992 issue.

Oh So! was exactly what a letter column should be — an interactive forum where like-minded folks could question, opine, and argue about shared interests, but a forum governed by a focused editor who wasn’t afraid to express his or her own opinion with eloquence and panache. Gee, sounds a lot like a blog!

Run, Don’t Walk

Out of the UK.

I don’t know if I have any UK readers stopping by, but if I do, would you please follow the above advice? I ask because you are living in as damn near a police state as a modern western nation has morphed into.

Children could be monitored for signs of criminal behaviour

All children could face compulsory checks to discover if they are at risk of turning into criminals, the Prime Minister announced today.

The controversial proposal came as part of a wide-ranging review of crime and security policy published by 10 Downing Street.

It said the checks could take place at existing important stages in a child’s life, such as the move from primary to secondary school.

The Government’s plan to prevent crime said: “Establish universal checks throughout a child’s development to help service providers to identify those most at risk of offending.

“These checks should piggyback on existing contact points such as the transition to secondary schools.”

The document did not outline at what age the checks should begin, nor did it detail whether police or probation officers would be involved in the process.

It was also unclear whether the check would involve a personal interview with a child, or if it would simply comprise a review of school and police records.

Socialism Causes Global Warming!

What other excuse caould account for the melting ice caps in the North Atlantic, heat waves in Western Europe and China; all the while the Pacific Ice is melting much slower and the Antarctic is actually getting thicker?

This has to be due to the lower total amount of Socialism in America and the former Soviet Union. Yes, Canada tosses a wrench into the mix, but it is at least as good a theory as any of the Global Warming Death Cultists have come up with.

Especially when you add this story into the equation:

NORTH KOREA BADLY HIT BY GLOBAL WARMING

North Korea had been badly hit by global warming, a North Korean official said, reflecting that the reclusive country was no exception in being affected by abnormal climatic phenomena.

The director of the Central Meteorological Institute of the DPRK (North Korea), Ryu Ki-ryol, said that in recent years the temperature in the North had risen two or three times the global average in the 20th century, according to the (North) Korean Central News Agency on March 23.

On the occasion of World Meteorological Day, Ryu said: “The high atmospheric pressure formed in the Sea of Okhotsk brought cold to the east coast of DPRK in recent years.” The Sea of Okhotsk is northeast of North Korea.

It compelled the institute to intensify research into the polar areas, where global warming has been observed more, apparently with a great temperature disparity, he said.

Global warming has been on the rise around the world in recent years due to greenhouse gas emissions, including carbonic acid gas.

Earlier, the Executive Council of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) decided to set “Polar meteorology: understanding global impacts” as its theme for 2007.

The Cabinet organ Minju Joson said North Korea, a member state of the WMO, will strengthen international cooperation to prevent natural disasters on a global scale.

North Korea, which entered the WMO in 1975, has suffered severe flooding and droughts since the mid-1990s.

The Il family’s horribly regressive form of socialism (aka: Nork Communism) has to be held accountable for the problem. Notice that relatively free South Korea, right below them and actually closer to the equator, faces none of the problems the Norks do.

I’ve got a theory, and I’m sticking to it!

Fun With Google Maps

Yansa tries to find out where the Internet might be.

I’ve never met this fellow Yansa, but I ran across his website many years back when I was feeling homesick for Oregon. He has some nice pictures here of various spots in the Oregon countryside and elsewhere. I believe he lives in Texas now, so I haven’t checked up on him in a couple of years. O how fickle are we Netizens!
