Robert Novak’s known for reporting the straight scoop on what’s really going on in the political sphere, the Plame mess included. So I think we can take this column as gospel:

Friends bet Thompson will run. He clearly wants to try, and his wife, Jeri, is all for it. Seeking the best timing, he wants to avoid the pitfalls encountered by Democrat Barack Obama, who may have damaged himself by starting his campaign too quickly.
Oh, I can’t wait….
I for one, would be quite happy if Fred ran. The problem with all the Republican candidates that are out there right now is that I would have to hold my nose and say “Beats Hillary/Obama” while I voted for part of the McCain/Giuliani/Romney Cerberus.
Maybe, just maybe there will be a Republican worth voting for in ’08…awesome!
