More on the UW murder

It seems that the autorities at the UW did not follow proceedures designed to have made the murderer’s job more difficult.

University Police and the College of Architecture failed to follow well-established procedures by not reporting Rebecca Griego’s pleas for help to a high-level safety team that could have taken steps to protect her, a top University of Washington official acknowledged Wednesday.

Mindy Kornberg, vice president of human resources at the university, said her department should have been notified that Griego had received death threats from her ex-boyfriend at her office in Gould Hall. She said the HR department also didn’t know Griego had filed a report — including a copy of a domestic-violence protection order — with University Police.

Had HR been notified of Rowan’s threats, the workplace violence-prevention assessment team would have met, talked to Griego and developed a plan to reduce the short- and long-term risk to her safety, Kornberg said. She ticked off possibilities such as changing Griego’s phone number, moving her to a different building or stepping up police patrols near her workplace.

I’m still waiting, but I have heard no demands that the folks at the UW who screwed this pooch be fired or even reprimanded. It looks as though this will all be swept under the ever growing “UW Rug of Failures”. Especially after they released this statement,

“Our hearts truly go out to the family and this is a horrible tragedy, and we really are looking to learn from this,” Kornberg said. “We hope this never happens again.”

Sure you do. More likely, you hope that you don’t get caught screwing this up again.

Now, it turns out that the murderer was an illegal alien of the European variety who had stolen the revolver.

Police say Rowan fatally shot Griego, then himself, with a revolver he had stolen from an acquaintance. The owner wasn’t aware the gun was missing until approached by police after the shooting, Wittmier said.

Federal immigration authorities said Thursday that Rowan was living in the United States illegally — the British citizen overstayed a 90-day visa granted him to enter the country in 1996 — and that they had been seeking him for more than three years.

Lorie Dankers, a spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), said the agency mounted a full-scale investigation and tracked him to Seattle, where a judge several years ago issued an administrative immigration warrant to arrest and deport him.

“The fact he wasn’t located is consistent with the lifestyle we’re hearing about him,” Dankers said.

Yes, it couldn’t be that your agency is underfunded to the point that it is impotent. Likewise, it is so inept that local agencies, if they had caught him, would have just turned him loose on the streets.

They don’t even know if the “Jonathon Rowan” was the guy’s real name.

UW police said Tuesday they’re still not sure. Police have asked Interpol, the international police agency, to verify the identity of Rowan, an elusive character who former friends and business partners say told so many wild stories they didn’t know what to believe about him.

Assistant UW Police Chief Ray Wittmier said Rowan had at least three aliases and two passports and legally entered the United States in 1996 with a green card. But whether the passports really belonged to him isn’t clear. “This identity may have been stolen,” Wittmier said.

Remember all of this, Washington residents. This murder will be brought up sooner rather than later by the local professional gun bigots (and by their hobbyist sycophants as well). Don’t let them lie.

A truly sad story, made even sadder by the incompetence of the goverment.

Do I think that employers should be required to protect their employees? No. Unless they ban said employees from arming themselves at work like the UW does.

Just more proof that you’re on your own out there folks. If they don’t screw it up by legislating your rights, they forget something.

Learing is Fun!

I learned a great deal yesterday.

I learned that a Tahoe is a retarded (in length) Suburban. But it is still a Suburban and still a GM POS.

I also learned that the Belgian BBQ story was a April Fool’s Day Hoax. Which still doesn’t halt the fact that it was only believable because anyone with their head screwed on straight could picture it hapenning any day now.

I don’t mind being caught in a joke. Ha-ha. Chuckle-chuckle. The Euros still suck balls. That’ll never change.

And I also don’t mind pissing off yuppies when I call their retarded Suburban a Suburban. I figure that it is much gentler than calling it a “bucket of bolts” or “a vehicle not worthy to be on the same patch of pavement as myself”. Maybe when GM finally upgrades the brakes so as to give it a decent stopping distance at interstate speeds (my biggest gripe with that platform), I’ll stop ragging on them.

Though probably not.

Not as hip as I used to be

I have questions. Hopefully, you have answers.

Real quick-like, does anyone know what is the deal with males in their late-teens/early-twenties driving around in their cars with the hoods on their coats pulled up?

Seriously, here locally, I cannot go to the store, let alone work, without seeing at least one vehicle with a driver operating it with the hood on his coat up. And not just “up because the heater doesn’t work” , I mean full on “Grim Reaper/Can’t see the face” up.

If I’m lyin’ I’m dyin’ here: Last Saturday night around 2200, I’m making a run to the local take out place and I see four of them in a Honda Accord. It looked like a fuckin’ Jedi Transport with them in it. Now, if I were stuck driving any Honda product, I’d want to hide my face too, but jeezus key-rist.

If I was a cop I’d pull ’em over for being a hazard. There is no safe way to operate a vehicle with a 60-degree field of view. They’d all either give up their hoodies or be walkin’.

———-

Secondly, when the hell did the Chevy Suburban become “The Tahoe”? I don’t mean which model year.

I made a comment to an aquaintance that he could probably fit something he was buying in his “Suburban”. He replies, “I don’t have a Suburban, I have a Tahoe.”

Only the fact that the wife has returned home kept me from saying back, “No asshole, you own a fucking gaz-guzzling Suburban. A Tahoe is a lake. Join us here in reality. You have been the brain-fucked by a marketing ploy.”

And this isn’t the first person that I’ve had say this to me. Although Imust admit it is only the second male of the species “Yuppus-Assholus” to try and bullshit me by correcting my “mistake” about what the fuck he drives. Most of them are women, and they down-right persnickety when you call their “Tahoe” a Suburban. To the point where one literally asked me to stop calling it a Suburban, like it was crushing her sould to hear it called such.

They changed the name because it is a GM product and belongs at the bottom of Lake Tahoe. just like the “Yukon” should be left on the frozen tundra and their owners should buy a Tundra.

But if you really want to piss them off, call it a “Burban”. Oh shit, that makes veins pop out of their necks.

Anyway, leave your answers in the comments. And Preemptive thanks.

Wednesday Happy Gun Links

We’ll start with the best gun post I’ve read in a while.

From Jim at Smoke on the Water comes the tale of his decidedly non-gun bigoted employer and how they helped get 10 new concealed pistol licensed Texans instructed for the test, with pictures!

Congrats Jim and thanks for the post!

If my employer wasn’t gun-hating yutz, we’d be doing the AR builds I spoke of on Monday in the drivers area on a weekend. Holds about 100 people rather comfortably and has a kitchen.

——————–

Next up, and also bringing much happiness, John the Poor Schmuck reports that the Oregon Supreme Court has reinstated the human right of self-defense without mandating a person attempt to “avoid or escape” prior to the act of defense.

Expect the usual “Wild West” quotes to exit the mouths of the state’s Brady afilliates any day now.

——————–

Lastly, and also bringing big smiles, Uncle relays the report of Armalite Inc. President, Mark Westrom, making a gun bigot politician look absolutely foolish in the middle of the bigot’s press conference by pointing out one very big lie.

Akward doesn’t even begin to define the words going through State Senator Dan Kotowski’s head after Westrom stood up.

——————–

OK, this should be enough happiness to get you through the rest of the week. Though if I find more I’ll be sure to pass it on!

My local paper is more liberal than your local paper

OK, maybe not, but it’s a damn close race.

Because my local paper actually published an editorial written (supposedly anyway) by Tereeeza and John Heinz-Kerry on the subject of “Global Warming”.

I’m not going to quote it, but suffice to say, if a former Republican Presidential candidate , we’ll use Bob Dole as an example here, wrote a piece exactly the opposite in opinion from the Heinz-Kerry’s, I would be hard cash that the Seattle Times would never publish it, even if just to Fisk it on a dead tree.

And speaking of stupid shit my local paper publishes, try this Letter to the Editor on for size:

Editor, The Times:

The bluster and indignation of the British regarding the seizing of their crew members is a bit much [“Blair talks tough over captured Britons,” Times, March 28].

Turning a situation inside out often puts it in perspective: Suppose Iran sent several of its military naval vessels over to cruise back and forth off Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, while staying inside international waters. Would this kind of in-your-face activity go unanswered? Let’s get real. The crew on the ships that remained floating would immediately be on their way to Guantánamo Bay for waterboarding-induced confessions, and might not see Iran ever again.

The boundaries of the waterways where the incident occurred were a factor in the war between Iraq and Iran. That is something the British knew and should have respected. It would have been prudent to seek and understand Iran’s definition of the boundary and to stay in constant and respectful communication with Iran about it.

Instead, the British seem to think the U.N. has issued a driver’s license that permits them to go wherever they want. Surprise!

Methinks the name of the waterway has been overlooked. It is called the Persian Gulf.

— Matt Travis, Fall City

Yes, you read that correctly: The Brits deserved to be captured because 10 Downing Street didn’t “understand” that the Iranians are (1) Batshit Crazy, which leads them to (2) Believe the whole of the Persian Gulf is theirs because it is called “the Persian Gulf”.

If only that prick Tony Blair would have understood all of this before trying to stop arms from travelling from Iran to Iraq so that Iranian agents and the insurgents they back wouldn’t be able to kill US and British soldiers! He is such a eurocentric bastard!

At least in idiot Matt Travis’ little world.

Double the Trouble

And double the cost, in my case anyway.

Belgium to impose tax on barbequing to fight global warming

The government of Belgium’s French-speaking region of Wallonia, which has a population of about 4 million, has approved a tax on barbequing, local media reported.

Experts said that between 50 and 100 grams of CO2, a so-called greenhouse gas, is emitted during barbequing. Beginning June 2007, residents of Wallonia will have to pay 20 euros for a grilling session.

Do the math, 20 Euros is close to $30 US. I spend that in meat per session if I’m not cooking burgers.

They should pay me for eating an polluting animal.

Basically, this is legislating the “carbon credit” scam. No word on if the Belgian government is going to plant trees or just kiss salmon with the money, but my bet is on the salmon.

They plan on enforcing this law with, get this, helecopters. You think on that for a second and try to not let your brains melt our of your head like Play-Doh.

Just how many pounds of carbon per hour do helecopters put out as compared to the grams put out by a grill?

It’s almost like they’re running out of things to legislate over there.

In conjunction

With David’s post from yesterday about Fred Thompson making it damn near official…

From the latest Pajamas Media straw poll…

The tenth week saw a large shift in the poll. On the Republican side, newcomer Fred Thompson emerged in first with 34.9% followed by Ron Paul at 29.00%. Previous winner Rudy Giuliani fell back to third with 12.7%. (On the Democratic side, results remained the same: Bill Richardson far ahead of runner-up Barack Obama.

What was that I was saying a couple weeks back?

Ok, before I start asking for my beer from Gudis’ comment there, this is really, really early. But i’d still be very fucking cool.

Yin and Yang

In America, specifically, Texas:

Criminals in Texas beware: if you threaten someone in their car or office, the citizens of this state where guns are ubiquitous have the right to shoot you dead.

Governor Rick Perry’s office said on Tuesday that he had signed a new law that expands Texans’ existing right to use deadly force to defend themselves “without retreat” in their homes, cars and workplaces.

In Canada, specifically, Ontario:

A Liberal backbencher is pushing the Ontario government to study ways to impose more restrictions or even a ban on the sale or possession of ammunition used in handguns.

Brad Duguid says no one except police should be in possession of handgun bullets, and he believes making them harder to get would help lower gun injuries and fatalities.

Hey Mugwug, you need to start makin’ plans, my man. They are.

In case you haven’t heard

There was a muder/suicide at the University of Washington involving a revolver yesterday.

Ex-boyfriend comes into the workplace of the woman, shoots her multiple times and then himself once.

The woman had just recently gotten a restraining order against the ex. In fact, it was sitting on her desk, next to her corpse. It appears as though she had show it to him as if to tell him he couldn’t be there because of it.

She should have shown him a pistol of her own. It would have been more convincing.

Unfortunately, the UW is a “Gun Free Zone”, which is why her ex knew he could kill her there.

While those last two sentences may sound cold and heartless to some, they are the truth. And the truth is something no one can change.

The media is hitting mostly on the fact that she had a restraining order and not on the revolver. Yet.

This is the best thing they can do: Show a woman being threatened by a man. He has the will to murder and she has a piece of paper signed by a judge.

Paper isn’t bulletproof.

RNS Quote of the Day: 04/03/07

After reading the quote, make sure you hit this link and read about the new horror facing the Brits which inspired it.

I have always regarded it as reliably axiomatic that government departments are named after whatever it is they are trying to put a stop to. One need look no further than the Department of Education for practical proof of this principle in action.

For the same reason I have always regarded it as a blessing that the legal system has been administered by something called ‘The Home Office’. For all of its indisputable shortcomings, I took great comfort from the fact that we do not, nor have we ever had, a ‘Ministry of Justice’.

Until now
