RNS Quote of the Day: 05/21/07

I used to take part in the conference calls put on by Washington’s Congressional Repubs. The session is over and my liberty is still mostly intact, so I don’t get the invites any more.

I stopped for two reasons: First, because they always scheduled them for 1100-1200 or so, right in the middle of my sleeping schedule. Secondly, there was waaaaay to much kissing of Giuliani ass going on there. One of the Reps even extensively quoted Giuliani’s books during one of the calls.

I didn’t really care for the guy, mostly because of his love of gun control, but also because he seemed just too authortarian to me. I didn’t know how right I was.

We look upon authority too often and focus over and over again, for 30 or 40 or 50 years, as if there is something wrong with authority. We see only the oppressive side of authority. Maybe it comes out of our history and our background. What we don’t see is that freedom is not a concept in which people can do anything they want, be anything they can be. Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do.

Rudolph Giuliani – 1994

He is wrong. Freedom under governance is about a group of people being willing to cede to a lawful authority the ability to make reasonable laws respective to the inalienable rights of peoples, and then to police, arrest, prosecute and jail those who break said laws. If the people do not like the laws, it is their job as free peoples to either remove those from the lawful authority via the “4-Boxes” theory with the last “Box” put into use to disengage from the lawful authority completely.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Link to the quote found at Alphecca. Jeff calls Giuliani a fascist. I disagree. Giuliani is not a fascist, but he is an asshole of the highest order.

Monday Music: Cause I feel like it

Link goes to You Tube

Amy Winehouse – Rehab

Since I forgot to mention this in last Monday’s post about firearms/mental health bills laying around in Congress, I figured today was as good a day as any to include it.

Not only is it a damn fine tune, of which a techno remix was being listened to as I wrote last Monday’s post, but this track actually beats the snot out of the remix.

But back to the topic at hand: Would alcohol/drug rehab qualify as a mental health disqualifier?

You can bet your ass. The folks who don’t want people to own firearms want to disqualify as many people as possible and will claim that since “Falling Off the Wagon” is a possibility, this is a “reasonable restriction”. Their friends who have gone to rehab but still feel the need for protection will be able to afford bodyguards and/or the bribes to those necessary to get their “permits”.

But what about you, if you’ve been? You’re screwed.

Hell, in most states you cannot even have a firearm in a place that serves alcohol. I cannot count how many times I’ve had to wait an extended amount of time for a table in a restaurant because I’m armed in public and the restaurant is full, but there are tables available in the bar. I’m not going to be drinking, but I know the law and there is a sign that clearly states that that area is off limits to minor and people with firearms.

Add to that, that in a large number of states, like Washington, the way the “No Guns in Bars” laws were written have cancelled out Castle Doctrine for the owners and employees of said establishment.

Drunks with Guns = Bad

Owner of bar and/or Employee of bar and/or Sober designated driver in bar with guns = OK

Right?

Compromise or Surrender?

I got a couple emails over the weekend asking why I hadn’t posted anything on the Kennedy/Kyl immigration “Compromise” bill.

I really don’t have an answer better than: “What the hell do you expect me to say?”

It sucks. It is surrender, not compromise. Our government has sat lax for so long with most not wanting to do anything about in fear of being labelled a “racist” that the other side’s arguments of it being “too big a problem” have to meat to them. Which is exactly how they wanted it.

Hell, even now some of them are still calling this a “racist” bill because it isn’t a blanket amnesty.

Our good man Rivrdog has a couple posts up on his thoughts (Uno and Dos) and I can’t say much more than that. I still think that if we deported a million illegals while building the border protections up that a very large number approaching half would haul ass back home. After that, we may have to go to war with Mexico when they balk at getting their rightful citizens back.

I’ve seen a couple of “I’m giving up my membership in the Republican Party” petitions/letters floating around and, unfortunately, I can’t say that and be honest. What I can do, and what you can do as well if you’re in the same boat, it to delve into your memory and remember who the last primary challenger to your elected rep was and tell them that if that person runs again in the primary that they’ve got your vote instead.

I’ve said this to the wife and a couple of other folks in person, but never here that I can remember, so here goes: If New Mexico Governor gets the Dem nomination and any one of the current front runners for the Repub nom besides Thompson get it from the R’s, that I’d vote for Richardson. Richardson has a shitty immigration policy stance, but is equal to Thompson on the Second Amendment. We may get amnesty out of Richardson, but I’ll have my guns, which is something I cannot say for Guliani, Romney, McCain or any of the rest of the crop besides Thompson, who still hasn’t announced.

And as we all know, having the guns is the important point.

In Memorium: The Booty Eulogies

This is what I hope will be a decently long line of posts dedicated to the memory of John Thomas Booty from some of the women who have known him. When the pool runs dry, I will make sure to put my own in here, though without a picture. For which I’m sure you all will be thankful.

And now, to our first

——————–

When I first met John Thomas, it was after an inattentive so-and-so made too wide a turn while backing out of their parking space and nosed into his car.

He drove it to my collision repair center to get an estimate, and he dealt with one of my assistants. His insurance company agreed to the repairs and the price and my assistant called him up a rental to take home. That evening, as I was closing up the computer system, I saw his name on the invoice and wanted to make sure that this job was done perfectly. Three days later I personally called him to let him know his car was ready and made his appointment to inspect it and take it home.

When John arrived, I greeted him and led him out to his car. As we were approaching it, he said that the curvature line was perfect, and I replied that he must have a very keen eye as we were still 20 feet away. He replied that he wasn’t talking about the car.

I spent the next week with John in Florida while he was doing research on the North Beach. I will always remember his gentlemanly wit, his kind words and his strong hands. He wasn’t a man to be molded, he liked to be the one doing the molding.

I will miss him, Cassandra.

In the Mail: UltraMax 6-CD Set

On the 13-hour drive back home from Tacoma, I was cursed with an inoperative CD player, so I had to listen to cassette tapes. Fortunately, I still have a couple hundred of those.

Unfortunately, they’re all from my high school and college years (1983-1991).

Actually, it wasn’t so bad. And one of my earliest musical obsessions, the Hooked on Classics series (classical pieces set to a thumping ’80s beat), sounded just as good now as it did then.

Well, with that in mind, if you like Hooked on Classics, you’ll probably really like some of the classical/trance mixes by UltraMax. Di.fm’s Vocal Trance channel had an ad for his stuff last night, and after checking it out I bought the 6-CD set, which is currently on sale.

RNS Quote of the Day: 05/18/07

One of the greatest delusions in the world is the hope that the evils in this world are to be cured by legislation.

Scaredy Bats

Local professional Citizen’s Initiative Filer, Media Whore and all around goofball, Tim Eyman, likes to put tax cutting or limiting Initiatives on the ballot. During the early part of his career, he was quite successful in getting them passed, though not as successful at having them meet later court challenges or getting the state to listen to items passed by the voters Usually, the local, county and state governments always found their way around his authored and voter approved Initiatives, much to the taxpayers disdain.

He’s at it again with I-960, which would make it state law that all tax increases would need a successful 2/3 Supermajority vote.

The local leftist Moonbats, who already think that he is a big meanie as it is, are going nuts with fright. They’ve gotten together with their socialist buddies at the local SEIU and filed suit in King County Superior Court declaring it “unconstitutional”. They want the court to order the Washington Secretary of State to NOT spend a penny to put it on the ballot.

Their perspective is that if they are going to fund their leftwing hackery and pet projects to force Joe and Jane Average onto mass transit and out of their cars, strip them of their property rights and stuff socialized medicine down their throats, they are going to need supply our betters in government with as much money as they can get their grubby little hands on.

And they even say that, though not so bluntly. At any time when any of Eyman’s previous Initiatives to limit the tax for automobile tabs to $30, if a local leftist worth his salt in in on the discussion, they will tell you that doing so hurt the amount of money the state was able to take in, which limited road maintenance and construction and, worst of all, lowered the amount of cash to go to mass transit.

Did it do those things? No.

No one can show where the state was unable to keep up on maintenance and with their planned road building projects. The state officials had a grand time saying that the Initiatives hurt their efforts and works, but they can’t show it anywhere on paper. Nonetheless, the meme took off and is repeated at almost every turn when Eyeman’s doings are discussed.

This one has the leftists so scared that they aren’t even willing to let the people vote on it. It may be unconstitutional, I’m not a legal scholar, so I don’t know. But I don’t care. Let the people show their feeling on this and let the courts strike it down in the future.

And let the public servants in the state capital listen to the people for once. Maybe they’ll get the drift that we’re taxed out?

Kewel stuff on eBay

Watch your state governments folks. They’re attempting to sell your property as a citizen of the state for cheap!

Like these two on eBay from the State of Oregon

a038_1.jpg

Lot of Gun Accessories

Handgun and shotgun: includes chokes, cleaning kit, bags and holsters, brands such as Armi, Beretta, Briley, Black Hills Trading, Safariland, Uncle Mikes and more.

478f_1.jpg

Lot of Holsters and Accessories

Holsters for Glock handguns and more as pictured, brands include “Safariland and Uncle Mikes”.  Some items appear new/unused, some items carry factory tags or packaging.

Your state has a surplus store that most likely sells to the public. Your taxes went to buying this stuff, now go get your property and profit off the depreciation. Just enter the name of your state and either the words “surplus” or “General Administration” or a combination of the two into your preferred search engine and you should be able to find it.

Btw, part of the reason I’m showing this pair in particular is that Washington’s GA eBay site would never see this stuff posted. Way to go Oregon!

The Soundboard: Need to Relax Edition

Work, even after the hugging yesterday, is starting to become safely routine again. While I was sure that Thursday was Saturday last week, I’m pretty positive that today can’t past Friday this week.

Anyway, just figured since I got a thumbs-up from reader DFWMTX with last weeks tunage, that I’d carry on in the same vein this week. Suits me perfectly.

So here you go,

Goldfinger – Laroque

Remember, The Soundboard is at least a little bit interactive, folks.
