RNS Quote of the Day: 05/21/07

I used to take part in the conference calls put on by Washington’s Congressional Repubs. The session is over and my liberty is still mostly intact, so I don’t get the invites any more.

I stopped for two reasons: First, because they always scheduled them for 1100-1200 or so, right in the middle of my sleeping schedule. Secondly, there was waaaaay to much kissing of Giuliani ass going on there. One of the Reps even extensively quoted Giuliani’s books during one of the calls.

I didn’t really care for the guy, mostly because of his love of gun control, but also because he seemed just too authortarian to me. I didn’t know how right I was.

We look upon authority too often and focus over and over again, for 30 or 40 or 50 years, as if there is something wrong with authority. We see only the oppressive side of authority. Maybe it comes out of our history and our background. What we don’t see is that freedom is not a concept in which people can do anything they want, be anything they can be. Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do.

Rudolph Giuliani – 1994

He is wrong. Freedom under governance is about a group of people being willing to cede to a lawful authority the ability to make reasonable laws respective to the inalienable rights of peoples, and then to police, arrest, prosecute and jail those who break said laws. If the people do not like the laws, it is their job as free peoples to either remove those from the lawful authority via the “4-Boxes” theory with the last “Box” put into use to disengage from the lawful authority completely.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Link to the quote found at Alphecca. Jeff calls Giuliani a fascist. I disagree. Giuliani is not a fascist, but he is an asshole of the highest order.
