Boomershoot Planning, Part 3: The Positions

ViewFromTheTop.jpg

The Random Nuclear Strikes crew (that being Phil and I) have reserved three positions this year: 28, 29 and (I believe) 30. One of ’em we reserved for Dave the GM Guy, who’s once again coming all the way from Michigan. If you’re attending Boomershoot as a shooter or spectator, stop by and say hello!

Each spot is 8 feet wide by 15 feet deep. Phil did a test run on the canopy he’s bringing, and it should fit exactly — 24 feet long, and sturdy enough that we can tie it off vertically without infringing on anyone else’s space. That’s 200% better than the disaster I brought last year.
Here’s the view from our area. We’re in the “Main” section shown above, further downslope towards the “Lowlands” than in previous years.

Hopefully it’ll be greened up by the time we arrive. That makes for nicer pictures (and less fireball danger).

For perspective, the closest targets will be along that little berm under the trees. That berm is at least six feet high.

Hooray! The Charger’s Coming to Boomershoot

61f7dbb5551741c6974a6fe7fc32b454.jpgI, know, I know, it’s a 10/22 pistol. What’s all the fuss about? We certainly won’t be trying to shoot boomers at 385 yards or beyond with this little item.

No, I’m excited because as a Californian, I can’t legally own one of these babies. Because the magazine is outside of the pistol grip, it’s classified as an “assault pistol” and can’t be imported for sale. Bastards.

I know Phil offered to bring it just to tease me, but even knowing, I can’t resist!

So I’ll play with it, and probably on my way home I’ll start seriously saving for a HornetProducts pistol stock for my 10/22, which is legal in Kali because the overall item is still longer than 26″ (unlike the Charger), so it’s classified as a rifle.

If You Don’t Vote For McCain, You’re Going to Hell

…and taking the country with you. I’m talking Supreme Court vacancies, folks. You want proof of Judicial Activism? On the Supreme Court? In the 1960s? Here ya go:
From a memoir about clerking for Justice Goldberg in 1962-63:

Working for him was an eye-opening experience. His first question in approaching a case always was, “What is the just result?” Then he would work backward from the answer to that question to see how it would comport with relevant theory or precedent. It took me a while to get used to that approach. The way I had learned the law at Harvard was that you looked up the answer in a book. The law was composed of “neutral principles” that you could apply to get the proper result, and you never really asked whether it was just or not.

Justice Goldberg opened my consciousness to the fact that the overarching purpose is about justice.

Jesus Christ! Emphasis mine. Well, at least Goldberg was honest about it.

Any of y’all still thinking about not voting for McCain this fall, crap like the above from Hillary/Obama’s nominees is why you will roast in Hell if you don’t. I like my Supreme Court applying neutral principles of law, thank you very much.

That Pool of Minorities is Shrinking

…according to the San Francisco Chronicle, where Asians suddenly are no longer “people of color,” they’re lumped in with Whitey:

A new study on physicians in California shows a glaring gap between the number of doctors of color compared with the state’s ethnically diverse population, especially among African Americans and Latinos.

At the same time, the state has a disproportionate number of Asian and white doctors, according to the UCSF study, which focuses on doctor ethnicity and language fluency.

Read the whole post at Volokh — it’s a good one.

The Soundboard: Special “Speaking of Taxes” Edition

Today is some kind of marked day important to the filing of taxes, or so I’m told.

And in honor of whatever day that is, I’m posting Death Metal

Dethharmonic – Dethklok

Yes, I know that I’ve previously stated that Dethklok tunage was too dangerous to post online for downloads. However, today is a special day filled with anxiety and hatred of the federal government across the nation.

So, with those factors already in the collective aura, the music’s potential damage quotient is cut by nearly a third. Also, since this particular track was preformed along with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, you can remove take another 10%.

But no more than 10% because the entire orchestra was killed in the process.

Lyrics and the tale behind the recording below the fold

I’m from the government

And I’m here to help you.

And I’m wearing a EU authorized vest.

EU forces bus company to dump passengers every half hour

Passengers are having to change bus partway through their journeys to comply with an EU directive.

The legislation stops drivers clocking up more than 31 miles behind the wheel without a rest.

If a journey is any longer, the driver must pull over and wait for a replacement.

To comply with the directive, some operators are dividing routes into two or even three sections.

Drivers are allowed to undertake journeys of more than 31 miles – provided they get two straight days off.

Small companies are unable to guarantee this as easily as long-distance coach firms and are thus forced to divide trips as a result.

Mark Howarth, who owns Western Greyhound in Newquay, Cornwall, says six of his routes have been changed to accommodate the Brussels directive.

He added: “All the success we’ve had in promoting the rural transport network and getting people back on buses – something the Government wants – is being totally undermined.

“These rules might be fine in an urban environment but they’re seriously flawed and unworkable here. It is not a safety issue.

“By allowing these rules to be implemented they’re putting the final nail in the coffin of many smaller firms.”

And that is exactly what they want, Mr. Howarth. They want the EU.GOV to administer and employ the drivers, an employer who will mysteriously then not have to abide by these inane rules.

Thanks for playing: “Welcome to Nannystatism!”

At least that idea is mostly harmless

Although not to your pocket book.

Australia: 1500 Police Officers Believe Main Job is Revenue Generation

A landmark survey of 3459 police officers in Victoria, Australia today exposed a disturbing shift in law enforcement priorities. A total of 42 percent of the police surveyed by the Herald Sun newspaper believed their primary mission has become revenue generation.

The shift is seen even more clearly in the attitude of police toward speed cameras. A mere six percent believed the government’s assertion that the purpose of photo enforcement was to reduce traffic fatalities. More than 70 percent of respondents insisted profit, not safety, was the true motivation. The state earned A$147 million with 671,063 mobile speed camera fines in the last fiscal year.

A spokesman for the chief commissioner dismissed the revenue raising claims by pointing to a government report that showed significant reductions in the number of accidents and injuries where speed cameras are used. In the Herald Sun survey, front line officers criticized high-ranking police officials for manipulating certain types of statistics to achieve a public perception of success.

Well, I’d rather that be their train of thought than “To drop the hammer on lawbreakers.”

I do like how the flatfoot gets a decent jab in on the brass as well. But then, Aussies have never been known to be vague in their assertions.

Must. Release. Pressure.

Death by a thousand papercuts: A geological example

Scientists listening to underwater microphones have detected an unusual swarm of earthquakes off the central Oregon Coast.

Scientists don’t know what the earthquakes mean, but they could be the result of magma rumbling underneath the Juan de Fuca Plate – away from the recognized earthquake faults off Oregon, said geophysicist Robert Dziak of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Ore.

They hope to send out the OSU research ship, Wecoma, to take water samples, looking for evidence that sediment on the ocean bottom has been stirred up and chemicals in the water that would indicate magma is moving up through the crust, Dziak said.

There have been more than 600 quakes over the past 10 days in a basin 150 miles southwest of Newport. The biggest was magnitude 5.4 and two others were more than magnitude 5.0, OSU reported. They have not followed the typical pattern of a major shock followed by a series of diminishing aftershocks, and few have been strong enough to be felt on shore.

This is how I wanted it to happen. Lots of little ones instead of one or two big ones.

At least, that is what I hope it means

It looks like what happens before a volcanic eruption, except there are no volcanoes in the area, Dziak said.

Except for Glacier Peak, Mt. Baker, Mt. Olympus, Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Hood and Mt. Shasta; no, there aren’t any potential volcanoes within 300 miles of the area.

But that is the kind of misinformation you get when you let the AP write your story.

How can one man

Be so dumb while using the word “Smart” over and over again?

Assemblyman wants California to require “SmartGuns”

A California lawmaker is so sure that current biometric research will produce “smart” guns that he’s proposing to require them in coming years.

Assemblyman Mark DeSaulnier has proposed legislation to ensure that new firearm models contain such technology within 18 months after it becomes commercially available.

Assembly Bill 2235 would require the attorney general to report annually on whether a smart gun is offered for sale in any state or country, which would trigger the mandate. If the technology is not marketed by 2014, the bill would expire.

Sure, it would “expire”. Unless some new jackass in the Assembly pops up in 2013 with more scare tactics and writes new legislation to kill only the expiration date. No new guns in California until the non-existent technology arrives on the wings of pixies. “Make the make them!” will be the rallying cry.

“I’m here to try to save lives,” said DeSaulnier, D-Concord.

No, sir. You are there to make sure the lights stay on, the roads stay usable and the criminals stay locked up. In fact, you might look into that last arena. I have heard that your state is rather lenient on criminals and that your recidivism rates are the highest in the nation. Just trying to help.

What a high and mighty asshole.
