Nickels announces plan to cut youth criminals in half

He wants $9 Million and he wants to start doing it by the middle of 2010. I guess the delay is that he’ll need to build a special abattoir for the task.

Fine with me. Hell, I’d support giving him $18 Million since this plan will probably make Seattle most crime free city in the nation. Hell, I’d support $36 Million if he’ll broadcast it on SPAN (Seattle Public Access Network).

When I used to live in Seattle, coming home in the morning and finding a ditched stolen car in front of the house ever two to three weeks was normal. Sometimes it was so stripped that I wondered just how they got it there without a roll-back flatbed truck. And this was in a well established neighborhood full of retirees and young working families.

Seattle is short on staff in the police department and they pay a fortune to King County to house the criminals they do catch in the county’s jail system, so I think this will be a win-win-win situation.

Oh, wait a sec.

Police destroy 14,277 “illegal” motorcycles with bulldozers

Today’s Daily Sunshine reported that 14,277 confiscated “illegal motorcycles” were destroyed by bulldozers in Yungang district, Shenzhen as part of the city’s “motorcycle ban”. The Shenzhen-based newspaper says that in April this year another 9.532 illegal motorcycles were wrecked in the same way.

Shenzhen began taking steps to reduce the numbers of motorcycles in the city as early as 1995. In 1998, the city stopped allowing residents to register new motorcycles and in 2003, the city passed regulations banning motorcycles from most parts of the downtown area. Today’s article says that since 2003 when the ban took effect, a total of over 580,000 motorcycles and electricity-powered bicycle have been confiscated. The Daily Sunshine article was unspecific about what constitutes an “illegal” motorcycles and how police go about confiscating them.

One rationale behind the ban is the rampant robberies in the city; robbers riding motorbikes routinely snatched handbags or jewelry from pedestrians and sped away often leaving arriving police in their dust. Some of these crimes occurred to happen in broad day light. The article cited a statistics saying that the motorbike robberies this year has declined by 58.32% compared with last year and three motorcycle robbery gangs have been busted by the police.

OK, now that last bit sounds more like Chicago style crime control: Forget all rational and recreation uses of an object and just ban, confiscate and then destroy them.

Yet another case where registration leads to confiscation.

Senior officials at Telford and Wreckin Council said the policy was to protect children and the vulnerable, and they would only stop anyone acting suspiciously.

But their actions have been branded heavy handed and “draconian”.

The policy came to light after two environmental campaigners dressed as penguins were thrown out of Telford Town Park when caught handing out leaflets on climate change.

Rachel Whittaker and Neil Donaldson, of the Wrekin Stop War pressure group, were told they had to leave the park because they had not undergone Criminal Records Bureau checks or risk assessments before being allowed near children.

David Ottley, Telford & Wrekin’s sports and recreation manager, said in a letter to them: “Our Town Park staff approach adults that are not associated with any children in the Town Park and request the reason for them being there.”

“In particular, this applies to those areas where children or more vulnerable groups gather, such as play facilities and the entrances to play areas.”

This is what happens when our schools stop teaching actual “civics” studies and instead teach “Social Justice” and just call it “civics”.

While 82% of voters who support McCain believe the justices should rule on what is in the Constitution, just 29% of Barack Obama’s supporters agree. Just 11% of McCain supporters say judges should rule based on the judge’s sense of fairness, while nearly half (49%) of Obama supporters agree.

In terms of how the Supreme Court currently makes decisions, just 42% of voters think the justices rule from what is in the Constitution. Thirty-percent (30%) say they are guided by a sense of fairness and justice. Democrats are more likely than Republicans and unaffiliated voters to believe the justices base rulings on the Constitution.

Is this yet enough evidence to proclaim that the followers of the Obamessiah actually do hate the Constitution?
