Range Day

As you probably remember from the announcement, Scott and I had a mini-RNS “Day at the Range” yesterday.

I didn’t take too many pics, but just in case you’d like to put a face to the posts…

One of the interesting things I’ve ever seen at the range without being at a match was this (and it’s for sale!)

P8290012.JPG

That, faithful readers, is a very “Match Prepped” Springfield 03. It currently runs a peep/globe iron sight set-up, which the current owner claims gets him 3/4 MOA. It is also already set up with the bases for, if I remember correctly, a Unertil scope, and has the beefier target stock, which I believe is walnut.

The rifle was built using a Douglas Match barrel by local riflesmith extraordinaire, Dan Cowan, not too long ago. Unfortunately, the owner has fell upon, shall we say, hard times, and is needing to get cash. He is asking $2200, which I understand is on the “high end” of the range, but I think negotiations can be done.

Feel free to contact me via the email addys hidden under the link at the top of the sidebar to put you in contact with the owner.

Independents Day

Last week I was wandering around the rightosphere and saw this post at Drang’s.

It has occurred to me that it is quite possible that the two things that Barack Obama has done that piss me off the most are:

To get me thinking of myself as a Republican, instead of an independent who usually finds the Republican candidate/position less objectionable than any others, and

To turn this into a political blog more than, say, a guns and amateur radio blog.

I have seen quite a bit of this as of late and I stand here now to warn folks to think before they think. Or, to think after they think but before they hit “publish”.

Party politics is cultish, and cults are dangerous to the health of people and the nation.

Party does not stop someone from wasting your money.

Conservation or nepotism? Since 2007 Rogers has been promoting a bill which would provide federal grants to overseas wildlife protection for lions and cheetahs. Surprise! Rogers’ daughter is the grants administrator for the Namibia-based Cheetah Conservation Fund, and has been since—you guessed it—2007.

And politics will not stop the party from fighting against their loss of power.

A reliable source unaligned with either GOP senatorial campaign in Alaska, and positioned to know, confirmed for me last night that the Alaskan Republican Party (ARP) stepped up their efforts on behalf of Sen. Lisa Murkowski in the closing days of the election, going so far as to phone bank for her from the Alaska GOP’s headquarters on election day.

And

17,000 of the 24,000 absentee ballots in Alaska will probably be counted Monday. Given Joe Miller’s late surge, it may not help him. However, I am told by a number of people that given where those absentee ballots came from and his overall support in the areas, the odds remain in joe Miller’s favor.

But word is coming out of Washington that the National Republican Senatorial Committee, already in “cover their butts” mode, is intervening in Alaska to help Lisa Murkowski.

The Republican Party seems to be in fighting mood against those who would help them that they can’t even defend the votes of those who vote for their candidates in overwhelming percentages.

In Washington, politicians always like to release bad news on a Friday, as fewer people notice. Today, the Pentagon announced that it had granted the waiver requests of five states seeking to escape requirements to protect military voters.

They have not earned your vote and you should not let them assume that they have until they have at least made promises, even if you know they probably won’t keep them.

This is the first year of the Independent. Make them work for your vote and then make sure they know you are going to hold them too it before you give it to them again in 2012.

When they stop killing each other

I’ll worry about the grand Muslim plan to take over the world.

Reminds me of this from Emo Phillips:

I was in San Fransisco once, walking along the Golden Gate Bridge, and I saw this guy on the bridge about to jump. So I thought I’d try to stall and detain him, long enough for me to put the film in. I said, “Don’t jump!” and he turns… You’ve heard of the elephant man. He was kind of like that, he had a, well, you could say he had the head of a horse. And my heart went out to him. I said, “Why the long face?”
He said, “‘Cause all my life people have called me mean names like horses-head or Flicka or chess-piece or Trigger…”
I said, “Well, don’t worry about it, Ed. It can’t be that bad.”
He said, “My girlfriend’s suing me!”
I said, “For palomino?”
He said, “Why was I put on this Earth?”
I said, “My friend, anywhere else you wouldn’t stand a chance.”
He said, “Nobody loves me.”
I said, “God loves you, you silly ninny.”
He said, “How do you know there’s a God?”
I said, “Of course there’s a God. Do you think that billions of years ago a bunch of molecules floating around at random could someday have had the sense of humor to make you look like that?”
He said, “I do believe in God.”
I said, “Are you a Christian or a Jew?”
He said, “A Christian.”
I said, “Me too. Protestant or Catholic?”
He said, “Protestant.”
I said, “Me too! What franchise?”
He says, “Baptist.”
I said, “Me too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?”
He says, “Northern Baptist.”
I said, “Me too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?”
He says, “Northern Conservative Baptist.”
I say, “Me too! Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist or Northern Conservative Reform Baptist?”
He says, “Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist.”
I say, “Me too! Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region or Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Eastern Region?”
He says, “Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region.”
I say, “Me too! Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879 or Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?”
He says, “Northern Conservative Fundamentalist Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912.”
I said, “Die, heretic!” And I pushed him over!

Exploding Blog

Pretty much what you’d think. Found at Tech, Guns, and Food which has some interesting stuff. Oh, and the author of TGF quit his job at Google to go live on a vacant plot of land in the hills. For those readers who, like me, don’t know squat about plumbing, gardening, or home construction (you know who you are, admit it) his Laptop and a Rifle is a very enlightening blog. He’s learning by doing, and making a pretty good go of it considering.

Amidst the sounds, of silence

Last week we were all informed that one of the Tea Party type groups, FreedomWorks, headed up by former Congressman, Dick Armey, had seen a dramatic increase in death threat calls, emails and letters.

Not that they just started getting them, but that there was a dramatic increase in them.

The day after I read that story, I read a post on the story at the hyper-leftist blog, Crooks and Liars. Now, if a middle aged Caucasian male who has ever even just glanced at the cover of an American Rifleman magazine as it sat on the newsstand farts in the general direction of a person who was thinking thoughts positive in nature towards the Democratic agenda, they throw up their version of the Drudge siren and declare all “Reichwingers” to be hyper-violent psychopaths who are one syllable out of Glenn Beck’s mouth away from committing genocide with fondue forks.

This story of actual, recorded with the FBI and stored in evidence rooms, death threats against folks on the right? Let’s just say they want to believe in a conspiracy made up in their own minds first.

Lovely group of folks, don’t you think?

In the meantime, shots were also fired at the Maryland Republican Party HQ last week.

Remember the Lend/Lease Program?

So will your children. Except that the one they remember will be the second one.

Royal Navy may need to borrow US fighter jets

Britain could be forced to “borrow” American warplanes for its new aircraft carriers as the Armed Forces’ core capabilities are eroded by budget cuts.

The country could also turn to America for surveillance aircraft if plans to buy new RAF spy planes are scrapped.

Furthermore, the Navy may lose its ability to put troops ashore in an amphibious assault.

The prospect of relying on allies for military hardware has emerged from talks about the extent of the defence cuts.

Dr Liam Fox, the Defence Secretary, has said that, instead of “salami-slicing”, where pain is shared equally across the department, the cuts must be allocated strategically.

Defence sources have suggested this will result in the Forces giving up entire capabilities, like aerial surveillance and amphibious landing.

Britain would have to rely on allies until the defence budget recovered, when these operations could be resumed.

Once again, parts of Europe cannot defend themselves because of their overwhelming social spending.

And once again, they look to America for help.

Let us all just hope it doesn’t come to the point where we needs to send their civilians small arms.

Sunday Cleaning Earworm

Whether you’re cleaning rifles after a weekend at the range, or doing laundry and cleaning the house like we are this weekend, this song should get you in the groove.

Oh, you’ll probably wake up and find yourself singing it in the shower. You’ve been warned…

Lyrics are in Portuguese, so make up your own words if you like.

Belated Friday Fiction: The House of the Nightmare

We had the first brown leaves of the season littering the lawn this morning, which means it’s time to start reading this sort of tale. A classic of the genre, with some added resonance for any fan of Unintended Consequences. “Got bit up some,” indeed!

The House of the Nightmare
Originally from Smith’s magazine (1906-sep)

by Edward Lucas White
(1866-1934)

I FIRST caught sight of the house from the brow of the mountain as I cleared the woods and looked across the broad valley several hundred feet below me, to the low sun sinking toward the far blue hills. From that momentary viewpoint I had an exaggerated sense of looking almost vertically down. I seemed to be hanging over the checkerboard of roads and fields, dotted with farm buildings, and felt the familiar deception that I could almost throw a stone upon the house. I barely glimpsed its slate roof.

The Alan Gura Steamroller Project

Good stuff’s happenin’ in Chicago, folks. And the Sykes and Pena California cases are about to get fun, too, and Nordyke’s not far behind. Not to mention the victory in Millender, the 4th Amendment search-and-seizure of guns in your home case.
