So tell me,

How is “this”:http://volokh.com/archives/archive_2005_02_07.shtml#1107888968 different from “this?”:http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/bizarre/3010322

I guess we professors get to have free speech, while the support staff aren’t allowed to have an opinion? Most universities have fairly strict regulations about what you can display on university property. I wonder if those who argue that the University of Oregon was right to make the facility worker take the sticker off of his car will make the same argument about this professor? I’m guessing no, ya’know?

Seems like it was handled very badly by the Corps, however. Puggs was injured in a “non-combat” situation – that doesn’t make his injuries any less real or the effects any less lasting (as we are learning from his prolonged hiatus).

The Truth?

You can’t -handle- _tell_ “the truth.”:http://hal.lamar.edu/~browntf/Churchill1.htm

bq. _*This is a work in progress that I am making available due to the current interest in Ward Churchills writings. I show that Churchill has committed research fraud, and very possibly committed perjury as well. This article analyzes Churchills fabrication of a genocide. Churchill invented a story about the US Army deliberately creating a smallpox epidemic among the Mandan people in 1837 by distributing infected blankets. While there was a smallpox epidemic on the Plains in 1837, it was entirely accidental, the Army wasnt involved, and nearly every element of Churchills story is a total invention. My goal here was to show how and why Churchill engaged in such blatant fraud, and why no one has challenged him on it until now.*_

I didn’t think Churchill should be fired for his hateful nonsense (now the people who granted him tenure are another story). But allegations of fraud and plagiarism strike at the very heart of what academia is about. One can only wonder if he will actually get challenged on this, or whether he’ll get a free pass because of his “ethnicity”.

Note to the tenured faculty committee – it should serve as a warning when a potential hire has *no* publications in a refereed publication.

This would be like me being hired and given tenure when the only things I had written were for _Cat Fancy_ magazine and _Dog Lover’s World_.

Pitiful Sods

I’m sure you all remember Sgt. 1st Class Jeff Due.

SCCCrecruiter.JPG

Sgt Due is the U.S. Army recruiter who was mobbed by the ‘students’ at Seattle Central Community College on Inauguration day.

Well, it seems that the louts who ran him out, tossed over his table and tore up all of his gear are petitioning the school to keep all military recruiters off campus forever.

Anti-war group targets on-campus military recruiters

Students Against War has launched a petition drive aimed at persuading administrators to order a halt to on-campus military recruiting.

I feel the need to warn you that there is a throwable objects warning on that article.

The Administrators of the school have backed off the threat to kick ‘Students Against War’ off campus if they didn’t apologize to the recruiters.

Apparently, all you have to do nowadays is claim that there were other student groups involved in your illegal activites for any punishment to be called “A Witchhunt”.

There is no word from the campus Wiccans about how that statement made them feel included in the article.

Burglars get unwanted Valentine’s card

Burglars in a south London suburb are set to receive a special Valentine’s Day card next week from a rather unwelcome admirer – the police.

As part of an operation to fight burglary in Croydon, the Metropolitan Police said it was fitting houses in hot spot neighbourhoods with anti-burglary forensic coding systems, known as Smartwater.

Known offenders in the area will meanwhile receive a card signed by Chief Superintendent Vicki Marr that reads on the front, “Thinking of you and what you do at this time of year”.

How about the nanny state in the UK just let homeowners arm themselves appropriately?

I think that would make burglars a little more afraid to break in.

Crime must have been pretty bad

In Bristol, Connecticut.

The police there went from wearing 9mm Glocks as their standard issue sidearm to wearing 40MMs.

Now thats my kind of constable. Must be some pretty hefty fellas there to be able to handle the recoil

Oh wait! It was just another ignorant reporter.

Nevermind.
