Another Mega Mo-Fo Hoo-Wa!

Our good man Chad at Dogtulosba achieved another milestone last week, graduating from the Army Advanced Airborne School with the title of Jumpmaster.

Head on over and congratulate him.

While you’re there go check his kewl new purple couch as well.

Also, Some Poor Schmuck reports on the closing of a chapter of military history,

On his final day at work, the last enlisted active-duty Vietnam veteran in the U.S. Marine Corps sat in a fancy chair in a white-paneled, brass-chandeliered room, his hands clasped, his expression restrained, four rows of ribbons pinned to his chest.

Master Sgt. Randall Arnold, who retired with a small regulation ceremony at Quantico Marine Corps Base yesterday, learned many things during nearly 30 years in the Corps, not the least of which was how to control his emotions.

As The Schmuck said, “It always strikes me as odd when I see senior military people without the Vietnam ribbons. It doesn’t seem so long ago to me that everyone I know sported them, right shoulder patches were as common as regulation haircuts and were not even noticed.” “It’s kind of surrealâ€?. Go read the rest.

All I’ve got to add is Oooh-Rah!

The Dumbest Story I’ve Seen in a While

Because it includes the dumbest idea I’ve heard in a while.

This story appeared on the front page of the Sunday Edition of The Seattle Times, below the fold.

Wanted: African-American campers

The State Parks and Recreation Commission has assembled data showing that many blacks, for a variety of reasons, are not frequent users of the state’s 250,000 acres of parkland, particularly for activities like camping. This, in a state with an abundance of natural beauty — from mountains to lakes, deserts and forests.

And there’s anecdotal evidence, too. One former ranger, who worked at Deception Pass and other state parks that each hosted up to 400,000 visitors a year, reported seeing fewer than 50 blacks over a 10-year period.

Parks-commission officials say that while park use among all people of color is low, it is lowest among blacks. Through their Diversity Camping Program, they want to change whatever is keeping African Americans away: the specter of danger, the fear that small towns on the way to parks are unfriendly to blacks, or that camping and hiking and skiing are activities only white people do.

First off, to get it out of the way; the parks commission is doing this with donated funds only, so there are no taxpayer dollars going directly to this asinine and racist program, other than the ones spent in meetings fretting over this ‘problem’.

Next, in a number of parks in Washington State, there is a waiting period for camp sites during the peak months. I didn’t read this in the article, but I do wonder if spots are going to set aside for people of certain races?

Also, what the fuck are the people at the Parks Department smoking and can I get some?

As is said in the article, some folks just do not like to go camping, and in this state, can you fault them? Most weeks it rains at least once and during every season except for summer, it rains a minimum of three out of seven days.

Oh well, I should probably consider myself lucky that my Democrat controlled state government didn’t just shut the parks down because of ‘Troubling Diversity Issues.

Say Hello to Nanny

I meant to post this last week, but forgot. It’s a little late now, but who cares.

Every year at this time, millions of ‘Casino Americans’ transform into ‘Fireworks Americans’ and barter their explosive seasonal wares to the paleface in exchange for even more of his money.

And every year, someone hurts/kills themselves in an act of Pyrotechnic Darwinism.

And your local, loving Nanny-Stater wants to put an end to all of it by using the last part to stop the first part.

Fireworks injuries rise as Fourth of July nears

The Fourth of July holiday is coming up, and with it parades, family reunions, camping, picnics, barbecues, concerts, fireworks and everything from milk carton races to fun runs.

Yet it’s also the time of year when fire departments brace for fireworks-related blazes and injuries, and hospital officials remind the public of the need for safety — and the importance of following the rules.

Their unanimous advice: Attend one of the many public fireworks displays and leave the fireworks to the pros.

“While celebrating with fireworks is certainly an Independence Day tradition, there’s no such thing as ‘safe and sane’ fireworks,” (Administrative Director of Harborview Hospital’s Emergency Services Chris) Martin said. “Rather, it’s always a hazardous activity that can result in finger, hand and thumb amputations, severe burns and permanent eye injuries.”

Yeah, OK numbnuts. I’m going to gather in a crowded parking lot to watch some underwhelming display of flash powder and chemicals when I can set off my own array.

They don’t ban cars because people drink and drive and fall asleep at the wheel and, as was stated by local talk show host and Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran, Brian Suits (from whom I borrowed some snark) they don’t ban 4th of July picnic potato salad because people get food poisoning from eating it after it was left out all day.

Independance Day

DOI signing.jpg

‘All Rights Reserved’, my ass!

While I will celebrate today as best I can with my work schedule, I will only be celebrating a few items in this great nation’s history.

I can’t say that I wholly agree with The Baron du Toit and The Mad Ogre, but I am not a joyous individual after having been watching the slow erosion of our freedoms in just the last decade or so that I have been a politically aware adult, the Kelo decision being only the latest tear off from the Bill of Rights.

So here is a list of the things I will be keeping in mind today:

The actual act of the signing of The Declaration.

My freedom to own as many firearms as I want and can afford. Granted, I cannot own the firearms I WANT and am treated like a criminal when purchasing the other ones, but I can at least own and train with enough of the other ones to be able to take their weapons. I’m sure you know the ‘their’ I’m talking about.

My freedom to type that last line without being hauled in to the nearest “Starchamber tribunal and jailed.

My freedom to tell the government to stuff it in their respective asses and leave, if I want.

My freedom to tell the media to stuff it in their respective asses and laugh as they cry when I do so.

My freedom to vote for anyone I choose, win lose or draw, even if I just write Donald Duck on the blank line (not that my Democrat controlled state and county governments will respect my vote by counting it).

My freedom to heap praise on the America’s men and women in service when they do well and to be able to follow the trials of those few who bring disgrace upon the ranks.

And last, but not least, the fact that America is still the last best hope for freedom on the world. Millions have died to defend her and millions more have risked life, limb and property to be here.

Raging Dave has posted a wonderful essay covering that last entry on the list. Go read now.

We’ll see you all back here tomorrow, hopefully in one piece. Or at least one big piece and a couple small ones. Have as grand an Independence Day as you feel like.

It is your freedom to choose.

Sunday Rangeday

Seeing as how I’ll be working almost all night tomorrow and the majority of the local ranges are either going to be closed for the holiday or are regularly closed on Monday in general, I’m off to the range to test out the new Tech-Sight on my SKS and also sight in my newest purchase that I have been doing the mega-tease with.

Just to keep up the tease, here is a horribly shot pic of part of it,

P7030002.JPG

(The pic didn’t turn out anywhere near what I wanted it to look like, but this will work)

Also, do not forget to stop by this week’s Carnival of Cordite!

I forget to link to it yesterday, so if you haven’t seen it, go check it out.

Anyway, I’m off.

Patriotic Ass: Day Two

21-0048595065T.gif

Hello class! After yesterday’s lesson in ‘Patriotic Assitude’ and how to show it it incorrectly (you all did know that there will be a test on this, right?), I will show you one of the proper ways.

As I explained to the my first and second year students, people should be able to recognize you ‘Patriotic Ass’. Whenther you are at poolside, the beach or walking by a picnic being held on the 4th of July in the city park.

More Kewl in the Mail

The wife woke me up yesterday to tell me that there was a package on the porch that she couldn’t lift.

Since she would have told me if it was ticking, I gradually made my way to the front door and brought the solidly wrapped carboard box inside.

Inside was a very smart looking crate with wood wrapped steel handles, Cyrillic writing and two lead sealed wires running through the latches.

Upon opening the crate, I saw a rectangular tin box inside, covered in Cyrillic writing with a wood handle sticking out of it.

P7020001.JPG

I pulled on the wood handle and the cable attached to it cut the tin box open as I pulled.

This is what was inside

P7020004.JPG

1120 rounds of 1979 vintage Yugoslavian 7.62×39 ammo in 40rnd boxes on stripper clips. Oh, how I like those stripper clips.

I purchased this fromt he same place I got my SKSs a couple weeks back, SOGII. The price was pretty good, not great, but since I didn’t have to go out and buy those damn stripper clips 10 or 20 at a pop, it made it worth it for me (plus, they were out of the Hungarian stuff).

Of course, three days after placing the order I found a place that sells packs of 100 clips for $20. Oh well, I’ll be having fun at the range tomorrow either way.

See you tomorrow.

Patriotic Ass

21-0048595065T.gif

The last time The Kid visited me here at The Occidental Tush Institute, the other university in town was having a protest. He went down to the location of the demonstration to “Laugh at the hippies” for a couple hours while I was working on some instructional materials.

When he came back, he told me about what he saw and said that he had been called a bunch of things that probably shouldn’t be put into the written word, but the one that stuck with me was that someone called him “A Patriotic Ass”.

I don’t know why it stuck with me, but I’m glad it did because that is what I’m going to show off this 4th of July weekend as I made it a class project for my first and second year students this week.

Which means that they will need some explanation, so….
