Slo-Mo Anxiety Attack

So for Boomershoot, Phil’s graciously allowed my wife to have the use of the Ruger M77 Mark I in .22-250 that Phil used to blast pool cue chalks at 100 and 200 yards. I figure that’s accurate enough that we can take the rifle out of the equation and focus on her shooting technique.

Phil noted that the rifle likes the Remington green-and-gold-box 55-grain Core-Lokt ammo, so it was off to the internet to shop. Five OUT OF STOCKs later, I called my local gun shop. “Yeah, anything Core-Lokt is tough to find right now,” they said. “You might try Cabela’s.” I did. OUT OF STOCK.

Finally I found sixteen boxes at Natchez Shooters Supply, bless them. Unfortunately, they ship at one UPS speed — ground — and it takes “five to six business days” to reach California from wherever they are, according to the helpful rep. I ordered last night; they ship today; five days puts the ammo in my hands Friday the 16th. Six days is Monday the 19th. We leave for Boomershoot on Tuesday afternoon. That’s cutting it a mite close!

I’m debating whether to request a tracking number from Natchez. Yeah, I’d like to know the package’s progress, but I also don’t want to give myself a heart attack….

How many rounds thru the barrell? My Savage Mod. 12 in 22-250 shot 1-1 1/2 ” groups at 200yds. until I got about 1800 rounds thru it.( Montana prarie dogs). Then it was like a 2 foot group size. Getting a new barrell on it as soon as my gunsmith can find one. Gave me an excuse to buy a CZ527 in .204 Ruger. Now thats a nice rifle.

I’m not sure of how many rounds have been through it. I bought it used (though ever so lightly). I’ve put about 1500 through it myself.

You might want to talk to Savage. This thing still whacks pool cue chalks @ 200yds on a regular basis as long as I do my part.

It went from shooting tight groups to all over the place all of a sudden. Thought at first it was a loose scope. Talked with several people who had the throat burn out and that is the way it happens, just all of a sudden.

Winmag, Have you thought about having a ‘smith just remove the barrel and set it back a couple inches (i.e., remove the wasted chamber and throat and cut a new chamber)? Shorter barrels = stiffer barrels = more accurate barrels….

  5. Winmag says:

Yeah, we talked about that but I decided to just go for a new barrel. I have an AR15 and a .204 ruger, so I will probably be using the 22-250 sparingly on prarie dogs anyway. I just like to pull the trigger.
