Ok, so we can simply wish that it would only happen in Oregon
Columbia County commissioners have asked the courts to decide if ballot Measure 5-190, the anti-illegal immigrant measure that passed Nov. 4 with 57 percent voter approval, is legal and enforceable.
The county filed for a Petition for Validation of Local Government Action with the Columbia County Circuit Court on Nov. 10 regarding the proposed county ordinance that would enforce Measure 5-190, which punishes business owners – particularly general contractors and subcontractors – in Columbia County who hire undocumented workers. The courts will decide if any or all of the measure is legal and able to be enforced by the county.
In a sane world the conversation would go like this: “They don’t pay income taxes or into SSI while taking away jobs from people who would do both of those things if they were the ones being employed. Therefor, the law is legal.”
OK, actually, in a sane world, that conversation wouldn’t even be taking place.
But in a state where Democrats reign, that is not the case.
The locals may be more interested now, since those lower-paying jobs the illegals work just got more attractive: Boise-Cascade, the largest employer in the county, just mostly-closed the two paper mills in St. Helens, resulting in 600 layoffs in the sparsely-populated county. There might be a few more real citizens willing to plant trees or work for Means’ Nursery now, because I don’t think those guys can bump to another mill.
