So yesterday, Joe Biden told America that not wanting to have your paycheck raided was “unpatriotic”.
And the left went nuts with their new talking point. Over at Truth Not Required The New Republic, Jonathan Cohn penned not one but two screeds taking anyone who wants to keep a tiny portion of the money they earn to task.
But my favorite was when Oliver Willis (Occupation: Toole) even went and excerpted a 1936 Franklin Delano Roosevelt speech on how fair he thought the progressive tax rate was.
Please, tie Obama and Biden to FDR some more. Remind folks about Roosevelt extended the Great Depression by at least five years with his overtaxing of the American public to build legacy projects. How he arrested and interned tens of thousands of American citizens on a whim. How he nearly causes a Constitutional Crisis by attempting to stack the SCOTUS with judges that would agree with him. How he used his Fireside Chat radio programs to attack and belittle individual American citizens when they publicly disagreed with him. The man who, had he lived, was so power hungry that he would have run for a fourth fifth term in office. Who repeatedly lied to the American public about the state of his health and who used their tax dollars to hide these facts.
Not only will Obama lose the election if the comparison is made, we may actually get a chance to finally put the dirt of his presidency where it belongs and knock FDR down a notch.
If paying taxes is so patriotic, why don’t Obama and Biden have a plane to make everyone pay 50% taxes so we can all be hyper-patriotic?
If paying taxes is so patriotic, why don’t liberals volunteer to pay the maximum amount, or even extra taxes, so that they can publicly show their super-patriotism?
Doesn’t Biden know that the rich already pay higher taxes than anybody, so they must be super patriotic already? What a small little asshat.

“If paying taxes is so patriotic, why don’t liberals volunteer to pay the maximum amount, or even extra taxes, so that they can publicly show their super-patriotism?”
Since we’re engaging in rampant overstatements, let’s flip it around:
If serving in the military is so patriotic, why don’t all conservatives volunteer to serve for the maximum possible time so that they can show their super-patriotism?
– Eric Sipple
Who said that serving in the military was patriotic, Sipple? If that is your standard, are/have you?
Round these parts, we don’t have “Patriotism Metrics”. Unlike liberals, who are the ones always going on about it. Either they’re whining about their being questioned or are demanding that someone else be moreso, or, like you, trying to stake down a strawman.
Besides, all the “Eat-The Rich” tax policies do is force the rich to collect taxes for the government. Of, we’re too stupid to figure this out.
Knowledgeable people rate FDR no more highly than LBJ.
Both are a disgrace to the founding fathers.
Bidden and obama ring ding dong should take a lesson from JFK and work for a dollar a year. Even at that they would be overpaid. And yes eric you are stupid!
The man who, had he lived, was so power hungry that he would have run for a fourth term in office.
He did run for a fourth term. Won it too. Back then, it was legal.
It’s hard to look like you know your stuff if you mess up on the facts.
Who repeatedly lied to the American public about the state of his health…
We can expect John McCain’s complete medical history to be released any minute now, right?
“Knowledgeable people rate FDR no more highly than LBJ.”

How blinded by partisan ARE some people?
Even REPUBLICANS try to claim the mantle of FDR.
Stop deluding yourself.
Hiya Phil,
You think FDR was a bad President. Fair enough. I think Reagan was a bad President.
I guess the principal difference between you and me is I’m not so completely deluded by my own personal opinion as to think everyone else agrees with it.
Phil,
Strawman?
http://www.gallup.com/poll/108646/Nearly-All-Americans-Consider-Military-Service-Patriotic.aspx
From the Poll: 70% of Republicans believe military service indicates someone is patriotic.
http://christianpost.com/article/20080906/mccain-s-patriotism-gains-points-with-conservatives.htm
“Conservative Christian groups praised Sen. John McCain’s humbleness and patriotism after hearing his revealing acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention where he opened up about his family’s three generations of painful war experiences.”
I should note that I consider both taxes and military service patriotic, considering without taxes we wouldn’t have the military we do, and without the military we wouldn’t have a nation in need of taxes.
My point is simply that your dismissive attitude about taxes characterizes the point of Senator Biden’s statement so that you can make a simple joke about it. I did the same in response using an issue often used as a political sign of patriotism amongst conservatives. If my statement seems silly, it’s only because yours did as well.
But to be serious about your point: why don’t liberals pay the maximum amount in taxes? The same reason many people don’t tithe the maximum (or even the minimum) amount at their church. They either have families to feed (and children trump patriotism most days) or they are, like many people, greedy and unwilling to part with any money they are not forced to. Which is why we have laws about taxation in the first place.
Thanks for making my point for me, Quaker, despite my typo. Replace 4th with 5th and old Roosie becomes truly scary.
Duros, I think the MSM (and the Democrat Party) has spent quite a good deal of time on McCain’s health. He has even had at least two visits to the doctor during the extended campaign make it to the nightly newscasts.
Iggy, Fred said “Knowledgeable People” not the general public. I can find just as many people who think JFK and Reagan were better Presidents and as Thad said, he disagrees with that.
Speaking of which, you’re entitled to yuour own opinion, Thad, but name one person Reagan interned or a tax raised to pay for a legacy project, or frankly anything that he did that could compare to the disregard FDR had for the American public.
Yes, Sipple, straw man. I am not your normal “conservative” whom you can beat about the head and shoulders with your two-brain cell stock positions. I consider the idea of “patriotism” much differently than most people in the nation do. Hell, I don’t even adhere to the normal pejorative definition of racism (as in, a non-black woman who only dates black men is a racist, but because it isn’t hurting anyone, it isn’t a bad thing).
Don’t bring your preconceptions here. Bring your reasoned and analytical arguments and your wits or leave with your tail between your legs.
