Ultimate Handgun Cartridge?

No, this isn’t the old 9mm vs. .45 ACP topic that’s been beaten to death.

One of my instructors from the Bower Shooting Clinic has an excellent article about his quest for a handgun cartridge that would allow him to both take prairie dogs at 2000 yards (yeah, you read that one right) and also put elk in his freezer.

What would you choose? His choice (and the article) below:

7mm Dakota (click for the article). I spotted for this fellow as he made a first-shot connection on a 1000-yard target from a cold barrel in a wind, so he knows what he’s doing. In fact, my bungled wind call was all that kept him from making it a center hit on that first shot, as he proved on the second.

He recently moved to Wyoming and has already located a ranch with prairie dog towns at 2000 yards, so hopefully I’ll have some good news on that front coming shortly.

2000 yards takes one hell of a rig, plus world class wind gauging ability to connect on anything smaller than an elephant!!!
