While I don’t like the current price of fuel anymore than you or the next guy, I know that when I am told by the media that these are record prices that they are not adjusting for inflation (the true equalizer).
Also, if you add in the current MPG stats for today’s vehicles versus those of vehicles in the past, like David Peterson at Order from Chaos did, you might feel a little bit better.
