Weekend Range AAR

Caution:

If you are a hoplophobe and/or a firearm bigot and the sight of people shooting causes you to run for your medication, this post is not the one you want to open.

Likewise, if the sight of women either learning to shoot, possessing firearms and/or taking charge of their own self-defense has caused you to faint or get the vapors in the past, you definitely do not want to click the ‘More’ button.

For all others, welcome.

Big ‘ol jet airliner

For the folks who have not had the pleasure of landing at Seattle’s SeaTac International Airport, here is the low-down:

It’s a clusterfuck. Bad parking, bad check-in facilities, insufficient screening area and outdated baggage moving equipment. The facility was built to handle half of the traffic it gets these days and although they keep upgrading it, it is piecemeal and looks it.

To make it all worse, it is the only commercial facility the area has and due to the uber-NIMBY attitude around here, it is the only one the area will ever have.

Or maybe not.

Eight miles northeast of the SeaTac Airport (as the crow flies) there is the King County Regional Airport. Locals such as myself call it ‘Boeing Field’ because it is surrounded by the original Boeing facility and the company’s former world headquarters, as well as the finishing plant for, I believe, some of their 737 line.

During WWII, Boeing Field saw the testing and then the building of thousands of B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-29 Super Fortresses. When I lived within the Seattle city limits, I could see and hear planes taking off from Boeing Field and some of my more elderly neighbors could tell you about the dozens of Fortresses that would leave the factories on a daily basis for service in the war and got a smile when the Museum of Flight would fire up their B-17.

Nowadays, other than a few 737’s, the only people who use Boeing Field are a number of private corporate jets, some private pilots who can afford the fees and freight companies like UPS, FedEx, DHL, etc.

But last week, Southwest Airlines made the county an offer they couldn’t refuse.

Off to the range, again

Yesterday went quite well, if I do say so myself, and I’ll have a full report with pics tomorrow.

Today is the day Majenta gets her first firearm. A shotgun. Most likely the Mossberg Persuader 500 in 20ga. But we’ll wait and see how she handles my 870 first.

In the mean time, if you didn’t stop by yesterday, there are a few good links here you might want to click through.

Also, today is the next to last day to get in on the e-Postal Match, so get on out to the range why doncha!

Hydrotherapy: Week 2 Day 2

donttouchthegirl4hf.gif

Kendra is not totally afraid of water. She’ll spend all day in the pool if she can. She’ll also swim in any stream, river or lake she can get to. But she refuses to get within 10ft of any body of water that connects to the blue ocean. At the beach, she is nervous and under constant distraction from the incoming waves. And you can forget yachts. Absolutely none, nada, zilch on open water boating.

Thanks to the JAWS series of movies, Kendra is afraid of sharks. And since sharks inhabit the deep and the shallow blue water, she refuses to go near it. Her 10ft minimum distance is because of come mathematic calculation she has done that determined how far a shark can put itself out of water and onto shore using its momentum.

As you can imagine, this can lead to some very serious problems for a professional model. She’ll never be in the swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated if she can’t put on the bikini and lounge in the surf, and SI is a goal for every model, so that is why she enrolled in my Hydrotherapy class.

Luckily for me, I get to go on a ‘field trip’ to the beach, just her and I.

At the Range

By the time you read this, I’ll probably be at the range helping my co-worker learn how to put holes in paper (as was mentioned yesterday) and narrow down her choices for a CCW pistol.

I’ve got some links you might be interested in though,

First up, the 23rd Carnival of Cordite is up at the ‘But That’s Just My Opinion’ blog. As usual, it’s a page-turner (or page-scroller, since we’re the blogosphere).

After you get done there, take a stroll on over to the Fun Turns to Tragedy blog where Kirk rips the proposed “Police Law Enforcement Armor Act a new ass.

If the name of the bill sounds innocuous to you, then I should tell you that it was proposed by Senators Lautenberg, Corzine, Schumer, and Clinton.

And when you’re done with that one, read what happens when the Democrat Party of Maryland gives him a ringy-dingy to ask for money.

Normally, when the Dems say that someone is underpaid, it is just a buzzword for someone with few or no job skills. In this case, I truly think that the girl who called Kirk was underpaid. But only because her employers didn’t bother to train her well enough to prepare her for the tongue-lashing she got when she said “The democrats support gun control?

You might also find this story on the situation in Thailand that I found at the FreeWillBlog interesting,

The Islamic militants are trying to do some ethnic, and religious, cleansing in the Moslem south. The three southern provinces have a population of some 1.8 million, and only 360,000 of those are Buddhists (the religion of the majority of Thais, who are ethnically different from the Moslems, who are Malays). The terror campaign is having some success, as some ten percent of the southern Buddhists have left the south in the past six months. But many of the remaining Buddhists are arming and preparing to defend themselves, and stay in the south.

Sounds like those Buddhists have listened to their Dalai Lama much better than their western ‘peace at all costs’ counterparts,

“If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun. His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, May 14th 2001.

And lastly, Countertop finds yet another excellent point from Victor Davis Hansen,

Meanwhile an odd thing happened. It turns out that the jihadists were cowards and bullies, and thus selective in their targets of hatred. A billion Chinese were left alone by radical Islam — even though the Chinese were secularists and mostly godless, as well as ruthless to their own Uighur Muslim minorities. Had bin Laden issued a fatwa against Beijing and slammed an airliner into a skyscraper in Shanghai, there is no telling what a nuclear China might have done.

True, there is no telling what China may have done, but I think I could put forward a good guess.

I think anyone in the right mind could too.

Now go read.

Hydrotherapy: Week 2 Day 1

donttouchthegirl4hf.gif

Happy Weekend everybody!

Today’s hydrotherapy subject is Cassie.

Cassie has a deathly fear of being in water as she is afraid her swimsuit will fall off. As I mentioned last week, this is a potentially crippling disorder for a model and I was there for her when she came to the realization that she needed to have it fixed.

She was overcompensating for her phobia by 1. Not getting too socail around bodies of water, and 2. wearing the smallest swimsuit she could find.

Weekend Events

First off, this is the weekend that Postal Match results need to be emailed in. Mr. Completely has posted the July pistol task here. If you’re feeling too lazy to click on over, I will feature them here on Monday when I close down the rifle results box at 2359.

Now, on to other things…..

I love spending time at the range. I think we all do. But these last couple weekends have been playing hell with my sleep schedule and I was planning on taking at least one day off this weekend and sleeping for 20 hours or so. There was another bowling pin shoot on Whidbey Island this weekend and after knocking down a few pins with my 1911 on my last trip out there I figured I was ready to give it a go in the centerfire class as well as my normal rimfire shooting.

That was the plan as of last Sunday night. But life is what happens when you’re not looking.

There is one thing that is the most important item for gunnies to do above all other things, and that is help others when they want to learn about firearms. If I could teach a new gun owner every weekend, even if it meant I wouldn’t be able to shoot for that entire day, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second.

I’m the gunny at my work. Sure, there are plenty of my fellow employees who own firearms and even a couple that I know of who carry. But me being the gregarious fellow I am, always inviting folks to join me at the range on any given weekend, I’m the guy folks seem to gravitate to when they have questions, like when they’re looking for a holster or a local range or a good deal on ammo.

A co-worker of mine approached me about purchasing a firearm and getting her Concealed Pistol License. She lives basically by herself, with her roommate working a schedule opposite of hers. Her neighborhood is nice enough, “but you just never know, ya know?

She’s been to the range with boyfriends in the past, but nothing serious and definitely not enough time to decide which type of pistol is best for her. She is also transferring to another facility in a couple weeks and figures that after making this decision, getting her training started would be easier if we started now.

So tomorrow, her, her friend and myself are going to a local indoor range that offers pistol rentals. We’re going to make a run on that rental case and see if we can narrow the decision down for her a bit while she learns the safety aspect as well as the function of the different pistols. While she’s not monetarily ready to buy, she will be stopping by her local constabulary next week to file her paperwork, get her fingers inked and begin her 30 day wait for her CCW.

I also got a call on Tuesday from the friend of the Analog Wife and I who does our tattoos. We knew that she recently went through somewhat of a rough break-up, but she called to tell us that her dog had lost its battle with a degenerative hip disorder and that she had to put it down on Monday. Now that she is living alone without a canine early warning system, she wanted to go to the range and try out some pistols and probably buy a shotgun.

So Sunday morning we’ll be going to the range where I’ll be showing her the difference between the recoil of a 12ga and a 20ga and helping her find a pistol she likes.

I’ll try not to be scarce around these parts over the weekend, but I’m not going to lose any more sleep this month. The Professor will definitely be around at least once a day and I have some things I want to post on as well.

I’m going to try to remember to take some pics of the ladies and if I do I’ll post them on Monday.

Have a good weekend all.

House votes to extend Patriot Act

Once again, all I have to say on this subject is, better a known enemy.

If you haven’t read it already, read it deep and learn.

On another note, I haven’t seen any of the moonbattery saying that the bombings yesterday in London were timed to influence the vote.

But the day is still young.

The Soundboard: Sucker for a Hook Series

Part 6 – Switching up on ya!

Today’s selection is a tune I consider one of the greatest hooks in musical history. I honestly believe that Marilyn Manson, Meatloaf and possibly even Rosanne Barr could record this tune and it would still be addictive to at least 75% of the people that heard it.

I’ve got a copy of it by the pop/punk band Strawberry Switchblade that is one of the more prized additions to my collection, even if it one of the least listened to.

To my knowledge it was originally recorded by a woman as famous for her physical attributes as she is for her voice and musical talent. I speak of the one and only, Dolly Parton.

The version offered up today is rendered by Bluegrass talent, Rhonda Vincent. While Dolly’s recording is very heartfelt with her actually sounding as if she believes the goofy bastard that is ‘her man’ will be gone in the morning, I much prefer the arrangement on this version.

So listen up, it’s a winner.

Jolene – Rhonda Vincent

Maybe next week I’ll post the original hook that is probably older than most of the readers of RNS.
