Weekend Events

First off, this is the weekend that Postal Match results need to be emailed in. Mr. Completely has posted the July pistol task here. If you’re feeling too lazy to click on over, I will feature them here on Monday when I close down the rifle results box at 2359.

Now, on to other things…..

I love spending time at the range. I think we all do. But these last couple weekends have been playing hell with my sleep schedule and I was planning on taking at least one day off this weekend and sleeping for 20 hours or so. There was another bowling pin shoot on Whidbey Island this weekend and after knocking down a few pins with my 1911 on my last trip out there I figured I was ready to give it a go in the centerfire class as well as my normal rimfire shooting.

That was the plan as of last Sunday night. But life is what happens when you’re not looking.

There is one thing that is the most important item for gunnies to do above all other things, and that is help others when they want to learn about firearms. If I could teach a new gun owner every weekend, even if it meant I wouldn’t be able to shoot for that entire day, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second.

I’m the gunny at my work. Sure, there are plenty of my fellow employees who own firearms and even a couple that I know of who carry. But me being the gregarious fellow I am, always inviting folks to join me at the range on any given weekend, I’m the guy folks seem to gravitate to when they have questions, like when they’re looking for a holster or a local range or a good deal on ammo.

A co-worker of mine approached me about purchasing a firearm and getting her Concealed Pistol License. She lives basically by herself, with her roommate working a schedule opposite of hers. Her neighborhood is nice enough, “but you just never know, ya know?

She’s been to the range with boyfriends in the past, but nothing serious and definitely not enough time to decide which type of pistol is best for her. She is also transferring to another facility in a couple weeks and figures that after making this decision, getting her training started would be easier if we started now.

So tomorrow, her, her friend and myself are going to a local indoor range that offers pistol rentals. We’re going to make a run on that rental case and see if we can narrow the decision down for her a bit while she learns the safety aspect as well as the function of the different pistols. While she’s not monetarily ready to buy, she will be stopping by her local constabulary next week to file her paperwork, get her fingers inked and begin her 30 day wait for her CCW.

I also got a call on Tuesday from the friend of the Analog Wife and I who does our tattoos. We knew that she recently went through somewhat of a rough break-up, but she called to tell us that her dog had lost its battle with a degenerative hip disorder and that she had to put it down on Monday. Now that she is living alone without a canine early warning system, she wanted to go to the range and try out some pistols and probably buy a shotgun.

So Sunday morning we’ll be going to the range where I’ll be showing her the difference between the recoil of a 12ga and a 20ga and helping her find a pistol she likes.

I’ll try not to be scarce around these parts over the weekend, but I’m not going to lose any more sleep this month. The Professor will definitely be around at least once a day and I have some things I want to post on as well.

I’m going to try to remember to take some pics of the ladies and if I do I’ll post them on Monday.

Have a good weekend all.
