Practice, practice, practice!

One problem I faced this year in practicing for Boomershoot was the dearth of 200-yard-plus shooting ranges in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Next year, if I’m going to be at all confident about shooting Boomershoot with a handgun, I’ll need lots of practice at 300-400 yards and more.

What to do? I think I’ve found the solution: Squirrels.

Boomershoot with a Handgun

I’ve posted here, here and here about shooting long-range targets with a specialty pistol. I intend to put myself to the test next Spring by trying to connect on some boomers at Boomershoot. I mentioned before that there are some difficulties with this plan related to the fact that I am a resident of California.

In particular, it’s illegal.

Quote of the Day

In mankind’s history, the understanding of the government’s proper function is a very recent achievement: it is only two hundred years old and it dates from the Founding Fathers of the American Revolution. Not only did they identify the nature and the needs of a free society, but they devised the means to translate it into practice. A free society – like any other human product – cannot be achieved by random means, by mere wishing or by the leaders’ “good intentions. A complex legal system, based on objectively valid principles, is required to make a society free and to keep it free – a system that does not depend on the motives, the moral character or the intentions of any given official, a system that leaves no opportunity, no legal loophole for the development of tyranny.

Love my Ruger(s)

You might recall that I unloaded several Ruger rifles a few months ago, one of them a Model 77 in .22-250 that Analog Kid seemed really happy to take off my hands.

But I didn’t unload all of the Rugers in the house…

Our first order of business is to select two judicial interns. I have six lovely candidates for the position, but can only select two.

Ammo Day Followup from Rivrdog

Well, the comments seem to be fried for some reason.

Rivrdog notes that:

…Bi-Mart, a regional discount chain, is currently having a very good handgun ammo sale, with 9mm 115FMJ at $5.99/box, .38 130FMJ at $6.99 and .45ACP 230FMJ, .40 S&W 165 & 180 FMJ at $7.99, and everything else not listed at $2.00/box off their usual low prices.

The sale is listed in their mailed-out coupon book, and is good until 13 November. If you’re not on their mailing list, you can pick up a coupon book when you get into the store. It’s a membership store, but life membership is $5.00, good for the whole family.

Buy it cheap, and stack it deep, as AnalogKid says. I like to keep at least 1,000 rds per handgun caliber, mainly because I have 3 different handgun/pistol-caliber carbine combos. This FMJ ammo isn’t the hottest, or with the most expanding bullets, but it is cheap, and FMJ goes thru car bodies best, anyway. In urban warfare, that’s a must-have capability for your ammo.

Thanks, Rivrdog! Down here in California, the best we get is the occasional sale from Big 5, but I think their lowest is around $9.99 per box of 9mm UMC FMJ, and that’s on sale! (Plus the county sales tax, which is around 8% in my neck of the woods, grr.)

No Bi-Marts in Cali, unfortunately. I grew up in Oregon; It’d be very kewl if Bi-Mart still lists me as a member…?

S.H.O.T.S 2005

Previously, I linked to the Specialty Pistols website and showed off their spiffy logo.
SP Logo.gif

Some of the guys who hang out on Specialty Pistols had attended Don Bower’s shooting clinics in the past, and this year they set up the S.H.O.T.S (Specialty Handgun Outdoorsman Tactical Seminar) for interested long-range handgun shooters. This wasn’t a Bower clinic per se, although they did have the 660-yard angle iron, but was more a roving field course with targets at various unknown ranges out to 1,000 yards, engaged from prone as well as seated benched positions.

Pics below the fold….

Quote of the Day

The source of the government’s authority is “The consent of the governed. This means that the government is not the ruler, but the servant or agent of the citizens; it means that the government as such has no rights except the rights delegated to it by the citizens for a specific purpose.
