Have Gun, Will Travel

Say Uncle links to a poll taken of firearms owners in the Gun Law News which asks which direction should the pro-2A groups head next.

The Results:

Nationwide CCW Reciprocity 43.5%
Repeal of NFA 34 28.4%
Repeal of ’sporting use’ 11.5%
Repeal of the Brady Bill 6.8%
Repeal of the Hughes Amdt 4.3%
Interstate sales of all firearms 4.0%
Other 1.6%
Interstate sales of rifles 0.1%

While each and every one of those are worthy goals that I would like to see happen, I have to agree with the big winner of the group, Nationwide Reciprocity of Concealed Carry Permits.

As a group, firearms owners are at last strong enough to go on the offensive, but we don’t want to go for broke just yet. We need to think a bit smaller than trying to repeal legislation and instead work on enacting new, helpful to the cause legislation, like the right to have my CCW honored by every state in the union, just like my license to drive a car or my marriage license.

Even if we decide against new legislation and instead try the tactic of getting the latest SCOTUS to make it happen, it will be seen as pretty much innocuous by all but the most fervent hoplophobes.

Why do I think this; because when new firearms owners or hunting firearms only owners that I have conversations with ask about concealed carry, they themselves are quite surprised that there is currently little to no reciprocity between states in regards to CCWs.

A push in this direction will help the ownership of firearms for personal protection outside the home so immensely and will also seem like a complete no-brainer to the vast majority of the general public. We would be fools not to try for this in the very near future.

Maybe then after a few years of that we can set about removing the need to photograph, fingerprint and figuratively look up the rectum of every CCW holder by removing the CCWs altogether.

What say ye?

Choose and Lose: The Day After

Before I get into my voting kerfuffle, Stefan Sharkansky of Sound Politics has a tale to tell that I fear is all too typical of voting in King County.

He was working as a Provisional Ballot Judge at his local polling station yesterday. A man comes into the polling place attempting to vote and during the search for his name in the books the man reveals to Stefan that he has only be residing in Washington State for around 20 days or so. It says right on the provisional ballot that you need to be a resident of the state for a minimum of 30 days to be eligible for a ballot because that is the law, and Stefan informs him of his ineligibility. As the guy begins to leave the polling station the lead Poll Judge comes over and freaks out because she is ignorant of the law.

Read about the rest of it here.

RNS Quote of the Day

The nature of the laws proper to a free society and the source of its government’s authority are both to be derived from the nature and purpose of a proper government. The basic principle of both is indicated in The Declaration of Independence: “To secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their powers from the consent of the governed…

Since the protection of individual rights is the only proper purpose of a government, it is the only proper subject of legislation; all laws must be based on individual rights and aimed at their protection. All laws must be objective (and objectively justifiable): men must know clearly, and in advance of taking an action, what the law forbids them to do (and why), what constitutes a crime and what penalty they will incur of they commit it.

California Dreamin’

Today’s election day in the Republic of Kalifornia, too. Polls all seem to show Schwarzenegger’s measures all going down to defeat, but based on some local on-the-ground info from yesterday and today, I’m not so sure.

Choose and Lose

Yes, you read that post title correctly.

Please remember that I am a non-bleeding heart liberal living in King County, Washington, so no matter what I choose on my ballot today, I stand a good chance that my vote will be evened out by a fictional homeless person registered at the county courthouse or someone who has moved out of the county and was dumb enough to mail the absentee ballot that the KC Elections Office sent to them (because the office is such a clusterfuck) back to the Elections Office in an attempt to be honest, only to have some miscellaneous KC employee use it to re-elect the person signing their paychecks and issuing pay raises.

And that is just what can happen if my vote even makes it from my polling place to the counting place. But what the hell, I still give it my all on voting day. When else am I going to have the opportunity to get assaulted again at one of the local Seattle schools?

While this is an off-year election, it is still an exciting one, what with the nationwide 50/50 split being encapsulated here in Washington.

I figure that I have at least the same chance of folks from across the US who visit RNS caring about who and what I’m voting for as the King County Elections Board.

So let’s run it down, shall we?

My Election Day I-912 Post

For those not in the know, Washington State’s I-912 is a Citizen’s Initiative brought into being when the citizens rejected the state’s attempt to seize more money via special legislation that inflicted the people of Washington with a series of gas tax increases spread out over four years totaling 9.5 cents per gallon of fuel. 912 would repeal those taxes and the state government, the county government and a number of other special interest groups (who are all just interested in getting their hands on this tax money) oppose it.

I have spoken about I-912 here before.

Washington is currently the on the tail end of the Top 5 highest gas taxed states list, but we are below the halfway mark in terms of states that actually see a return of our money in improvements. This fact puts us consistently in the Top 5 worst cities for traffic and the only things the state and county can come up with are expensive fantasy schemes of mass transit to waste our tax money on.

We have been held in limbo by wannabe social engineers who want the Seattle Metro area to be more like any Euro city with assloads of trains you care to name while traffic just gets worse and worse.

45% of our transportation money goes to fund mass transit, even though less that 8% of the citizens utilize it. This election cycle has even seen Democrat County Executive Candidates brag that they refuse to build more lane capacity and feel no fault in flat out telling voters that they would rather waste the transportation money on faulty bus routes and inflexible train schedules than make the commute easier.

That is how screwed up this place is.

If you haven’t read my previous post on Initiative 912, I suggest you do so now because what will follow are updates to that. While the updates are entertaining, you might need some background to get the full giggle/smash something effect.

RNS Quote of the Day

A society that robs an individual of the product of his effort, or enslaves him, or attempts to limit the freedom of his mind, or compels him to act against his own rational judgment – a society that sets up a conflict between its edicts and the requirements of a man’s nature – is not, strictly speaking, a society, but a mob held together by institutionalized gang rule. Such a society destroys all the values of human coexistence, has no possible justification and represents, not a source of benefits, but the deadliest threat to man’s survival. Life on a desert island is safer than and incomparably preferable to existence Soviet Russia or nazi Germany.

The Soundboard: Make Up Day

I was fully intentioned to pop in and post a quick music post last Thursday, but in my withdrawals I forgetted.

Seeing as how I have what seems to be three or four voices in my head telling me what to post, I’m going to listen to the one that is acting a little strange and post a Euro-Pop rendition of an old Romanian folk tune, sung in the original Romanian.

Dragostea Din Tea – O Zone

This tune was also released by a group called Haiducii (The Outlaws) at nearly the same time in the original Romanian and the group O Zone released an English and an Italian version, but they’re all really bland, so I’m posting this one.

Mindless pop will either set you free or cause you to pound your head in screaming aural pain. I will take credit for neither.

Lyrics below the fold.

They’re Baack

OK, it’s actually just me, although I’m feeling like I have multiple personalities right now.

You see, I spent most of last week either nose deep in any book that was nearby or asleep because I was using the downtime to stop sucking on Camel butts.

And I am pretty much happy to say that I’ve been without nicotine since around noon on last Tuesday, and if I can sidestep for a moment, I’d like to pontificate on that topic.

First off, the people who say that nicotine leaves your body in three to four days are bold faced lying rat bastards. So are the ones who say that food tastes better when you don’t smoke. Nearly everything I’ve tried tastes like cooked shit. Deep fried corndogs with mustard and washed down with Jones Green Apple Soda are the only thing thats tastes even halfway decent.

I’m only “pretty much happy because I still don’t trust myself out and about alone because I can go to any quikiemart and buy a pack and the fact that I have to fight the urge to do so with every bit of willpower I can muster sucks more ass than even Michael Moore has available. Needless to say, going back to work tonight will most likely prove a harder test than I have faced in a long time.
