RNS Quote of the Day

With no principles, standards or criteria to guide it, the anti-trust case law is the record of seventy years of sophistry, casuistry and hair-splitting, as absurd and as removed from contact with reality as the debates of medival scholastics. With this only difference: the scholastics had better reasons for the questions they raised and no specific human lives or fortunes hung on the outcomes of their debates.

Welcome!

To Fantasy Island!

Thank you, Mr. Ruark, but this isn’t Fantasy Island, this is the new Random Nuclear Strikes!

I thought we’d been through this? Get out of here, Ruark! You hack!

Hello everyone and welcome to our new place!

Do not be alarmed. Be very, very afraid!

We have been rebuilt. We are stronger, faster and smarter than ever before. OK, maybe not smarter, but we sure do feel like it with the sharp, clean edges and that “New Blog Smell”.

I’d first like to give a big time Thank You to Mr. Craig at MT Politics for the hours he put in getting this beast to run. He is still on a personal quest to de-stankify the RNS archives going back to 2002, and he will let me know when his quest is done. I just hope it won’t be like a Monty Python Holy Grail quest, so just in case, don’t be letting loose any naughty nurses of Anthrax in his general direction if you want to see the archives again. Also, I’m sure that his wife wouldn’t appreciate that.

We are optimized for viewing at 1024×768 for those who care about those things and I hope that the size change and the text and background changes help the readability of RNS, since the whole point of a blog is to read it.

And comment on it! The comments work now! Happy Day, Happy Day!

David and I will be learning how to use WordPress during the next couple weeks, so if you see something strange, don’t worry too much, we’re working on it.

Let me know if you have any difficulties. I’m still at the same address “RandomNuclearStrikes – at – GMail – dot – Com” so feel free to write or just leave a comment somewhere and I’ll get that soon enough.

Thanks for stopping by RNS. Have a good week.

Pre-Birthday Rangeday

On Saturday afternoon, after the Seahawks won their spot at next week’s NFC Championship game, I met up with my co-worker, Paul, and his son at the Champion indoor range that I wrote of last week. He was testing out his new Springfield Armory 1911 that he recently picked up when I arrived.

Unfortunately, it needs some ramp and throat work done as it didn’t even like feeding the Winchester ball ammo he had for it. We tested different ammo and different mags, but the lower portion of the chamber is a little too long to get the front edge of the projectile to go in at least once every seven rounds.

On the other hand, my carry piece 1911 worked flawlessly as did my Ruger 22/45, which Paul’s son spent some time shooting under Paul’s guidance. My CZ 83 took another step towards me declaring that everyone on the planet must have one. What else can I say about a gun that puts the best design points of the Walther PPK and the 1911 into one firearm?

My newest 1911, the Colt Commander, decided that it was just going to be fussy since I haven’t yet taken it to the gunsmith for some work and failed to eject 4 times out of 100 rounds (it extracted just fine). I’ll have the smith put a new ejector in there and tune it while he’s dropping the trigger pull pressure.

Speaking of the trigger, it ate my trigger finger up again, ripping off the callus I made by shooting it last week. I founf that while I was able to dull down the grooves on the face of the trigger, I neglected to get into the trigger overtravel adjustment screww and they had some teeth on them.

Eh, more blood on the gun just makes it more ‘Mine’, right?

So here is the picture, taken in the super-wide booths at Champion, of the Gang of Four that went with me.

Time to pull up stakes?

Since the Maryland Legislature has decided that it doesn’t like the way that Wal-Mart does its business, I have to agree with Mr. Preston at the JunkYardBlog that Wal-Mart should turn right around and show the Maryland Legislature that Wal-Mart doesn’t like the way the Legislature does business either and close everyone of their 40 stores inside Maryland and reopen them in towns that border the state.

That’ll be approximately 17,000 jobs that the Legislators who voted to override the Governor’s veto lost for their state’s residents by forcing their socialist business model on a private company.

That’ll also mean that the state’s residents will have to find 40 new places to shop for what they want at a price they like.

JYB also links to this funny GIF file at Clark Mountain Musings called “Wal-Mart Strategically Redeploys”.

Notice the use of Murtha-speak there?

It’s funny because it’s true.

Paging Mr. Westneat

Out of all the hullaballo going around about the money from the Casino Americans that lobbyist Jack Abramoff was throwing around, one of the people on the list of Top Ten Recipients was the senior Senator from Washington State, Patty Murray (D)ingbat.

Murray got a minimum of $35,000 from Abramoff’s clients and she is determined to keep it. Now, I don’t hold naything against someone keeping money that was lawfully given to them, but she at least needs to be honest about where it came from. Her defense is that it came from the tribes themselves and not personally handed to her in an unmarked envelope by Abramoff. Also that she reported it and has already spent it.

Last week, the two Seattle papers have said that since the junior Senator, Cantwell, has given her tribe money away, Murray should do so as well. But not everyone at these papers thinks that way. In fact, Danny Westneat, columnist for the Seattle Times thinks she should be somewhat proud that she got and is keeping it.

“I will not rush to scapegoat those tribes that have already been victimized by Jack Abramoff” Murray wrote in a letter to the Seattle Times. “Your easy answer would be fine if all I wanted was to score cheap points on ‘being clean’.

So her being honest about how she secured her number nine position on the “Got the Most Money from Abramoff Clients” list is now “The Easy Answer“?

Does she really think that the tribes who hired Abramoff because he was so effective at lobbying Congress are ‘Victims’ like she said? Does she really think that Abramoff never once pointed the tribes in her direction as to where the money would be most effective? Does she really think that none of the other people who are returning/donating their Abramoff/tribe money didn’t legally report it when they got it or haven’t spent it already (most of their amounts being pocket change compared to what she got)? Does she really consider the amount of money that she received, as a Senator from the Northwestern United States from multiple tribes in the Southeast region of the United States, was just because they liked her and wanted to help her get re-elected because she would vote for their cause?

And lastly, does she really think that the people of Washington are so stupid as to believe her?

Apparently some are. Paging Mr. Westneat.

Maybe Westneat should click here and scroll on down to the bottom of the page to see Murray’s committee assignments? I’m sure that will provide at least a partial answer and to how she became #9.

An odd way to say goodbye

In what will hopefully be the last word we’ll hear on the suicide of eco-terrorist, Bill Rogers, who killed himself after being arrested for setting fire to private property and then the FBI finding child pornography at his home during the search following his arrest, we have what is reported to be his suicide not, posted on the Portland IndyMedia site.

To my friends and supporters to help them make sense of all these events that have happened so quickly:

Certain human cultures have been waging war against the Earth for milennia. I choose to fight on the side of bears, mountain lions, skunks, bats, saguaros, cliff rose and all things wild. But tonight I have made a jail break – I am returning home, to the earth, to the place of my origins.

Bill

Toodles, Bill.

BTW Bill, the bears, mountain lions, skunks, bats, saguaros and cliff roses didnt’ bother to take notice. But hey, at least you’re happy, right?

RNS Quote of the Day

There is no way to legislate competition; there are no standards by which one could define who should compete with whom, how many competitors should exist in any given field, what should their relative strengths or their so called “Relative Markets”, what prices they should charge, what methods of competition are “Fair” or “Unfair”. None of these can be answered, because they are precisely the questions that can be answered only by the mechanism of the free market.

Abracadabra

Does this reach out and grab ya?

Yes, as you can see, there have been some changes around RNS, but shhhhhh, the big announcement isn’t until tomorrow. So let’s just keep this our little secret between all you weekend visitors and me.

Professor Booty is a little bit pissed because he can’t figure out how to post in WordPress yet and wants me to show him. No, not tell him via email or even over the phone, he wants me to fly out to OTI and sit down with him and show him.

Now, he is offering to cover the airfare and the food and the lodging AND the birthday party, but I just can’t do it. I’ve got a get together with some friends already planned and a lunch date with the Analog Mom today and I just couldn’t do it, mostly because of the prior obligations, but also because I haven’t figured it out yet either.

So you all enjoy today and stop by tomorrow for the official grand re-opening of RNS WP-Edition. I’ve got some ranting already planned.

Have a good day all.

Wonderful Things Are Afoot

Yes as the Professor seems to have opined, this is the weekend before my birthday. No, I’m not going to pull his publishing abilities for letting the cat out of the bag. What, you think I want my weekend readers to abandon me?

But since it is a minor celebratory weekend, I’m off to the range this afternoon after a bit of time sawing logs.

As the title of the post says, things are afoot behind the scenes at RNS and you should see them by Monday and that is all I’m going to say right now.

In the interim, I want to give you links to a couple of things I saw this week.

First up, Mr. Completely has an excellent video of an Icelandic Benchrest Rifle shooter making one ragged hole in his target.

The guy also seems to have started a blog a couple weeks back with more videos on it that you might want to check out.

Speaking of Benchrest Rifle shooting, I have found a semi-local range (90-120 minute drive away) that hosts 1000yd Benchrest matches) I will hopefully be allowed to blog my visit for their next match and let you know how that goes. If it goes well, I’ll be joining. 1000yds in a straight line with no wind is still 1000yds.

Just doing what I can to get ready for Boomershoot in April.

Another video I saw was this one linked to by the Emperor. If that is what school is like nowadays, I think I may have to lose my diploma and enroll. Math class was so boring before, I think a good running gun battle would spice things up a bit.

Have a safe weekend and get out to the range. Think of it as a birthday present to me.
