Visions of Travels Past

Well, as I explained yesterday, since I don’t get to go along with the OTI Bobsled Team to Turin this year, I will just have to keep the memories of the last time I visited that city a little bit closer.

Which won’t be that difficult.

It’s probably Haute Coture

But there’s got to be a way to support this guy.

Flaunting an “I Love N.Y.” jumpsuit at the Puck Building Friday night, designer Apollo Braun mixed erotic fashion and politics in his most recent runway show. As male and female models strutted down the catwalk bedecked in colorful styles and sporting eccentric touches like parrot hair clips, some models held the provocative Danish cartoons depicting the Islamic prophet Mohammed above their heads.

Bruan, who grew up in Israel, said that some of his best friends are Muslim, but that terrorists are “animals.” “I am from Israel, I know how radical those radicals can be, but you can’t be afraid to live,” he said.

Speaking about terrorists of Muslim background, Braun added, “They will kill me anyway. I’m bisexual, an artist and American. In Iran there are cartoons against America every day.” He added that he thinks the images should be shown in mainstream American media outlets.

Throughout the night, three models were chosen to hold the cartoons. Two of them toted the same image and the other displayed a drawing of Mohammed with horns growing out of his turban. When all the models lined up for the finale most of them were encouraged to smile and appear to be having fun. Everyone swept across the stage smiling, except a woman holding a cartoon above her head. She was reportedly told by an organizer not to remain stern. Braun announced that his next T-shirt will say, “The president of Iran is an impotent.”

If I see one, I’m buying it. Can we get this guy on Cafe Press or one of the actual right wing t-shirt sites?

In California, Of Course

That is where criminal charges are filed after a game of Dodge Ball

ALTA LOMA, Calif. — What started as a version of the schoolyard game of dodge ball has apparently become a legal ordeal for a 12-year-old girl and her family.

Complaints by the parents of a student injured during a game at Hermosa Elementary School prompted authorities to charge Brittney Schneiders with battery.

Five other students also accused of battery stemming from the May 8 playground game opted to take probation, but Brittney Schneiders and her parents refused.

They’re raising future nanny staters like grapes, I swear!

They aren’t gold diggers

But they wanted to get themselves some Olympic Gold.

OTI has a women’s bobsled team, one of the best in the country, and one of the few sports we have where the paticipants wear clothing. In their case, the body hugging suits do them a good bit of justice (and may contribute to some of the judges pleasure in seeing them come down the mountain).

Unfortunately, like most folks who compete in the so-called ‘extreme sports’, the Occidental Tush Institute team ladies have somewhat of a wild streak. While at time trials during the tryouts for US Olympic Team qualifications, one reporter shouted out something to the effect “Let’s see those tushies!”

So you have young women with a moderate wild streak who are also learning how to be models and love the camera being dared to show off their pride and joys, and you get something like this

The US Olympic Adminstrators saw that and shot down any chance the ladies had at going to Turin this year. I still think that someone in the administration office has Glute-Envy.

Please Explain to Me

Who exactly are the brownshirts again?

The NW Progessive Institute is launching a campaign called “Report Right Wing Signature Gathering Activity”.

The point of their exercise is to have policically active local liberal and ‘progressive’ folks report where they see people gathering signatures to qualify an Initiative for the state-wide ballot so that they can network someone to that location and verbally harrass both the signature gatherers and folks wanting to sign the petition.

Here is one of the buttons they are encouraging left wing websites to put on ther blogs

I don’t mind a debate on the issues, in fact, I think it is quite healthy, but when one side quashes the debate by sending in people to scream at signature gatherers, I get very pissed, no matter who is doing it.

Don’t everybody rush

To announce the good news at once.

You won’t read about this on the front page

Retail sales see best gains since late ’99

Consumers, energized by unusually warm weather and the tame heating bills that went with it, hit the malls with gusto last month, sending retail sales soaring by 2.2 percent — the biggest jump in six years.

The sales spurt, which coincided yesterday with a drop in premium crude oil prices below the psychological threshold of $60 a barrel, sent the Dow Jones Industrial Average surging by 136 points to 11,028.

“You have lower oil prices; you have a healthy employment situation; and you have a consumer that is still willing to do a little bit of spending,” said Gordon Fowler, chief investment officer at Glenmede Trust Co. “That all adds up to a positive for the economy.”

They’re So Predictable

In my post about the failing of the bill in the Washington State Legislature that would have made large employers like Wal-Mart pay a certain percentage of their payrolls directly to the state government for government health care programs I said “It seems that the worst is over. For now anyway.”

It sure didn’t take them very long to prove me right,

Gov. Chris Gregoire pledged Thursday to pass a “perfected” bill next year mandating health care coverage by large employers, just days after a version aimed squarely at Wal-Mart died at the Legislature.

Clinton going after Microsoft was only about half as idiotic as this.

RNS Quote of the Day

You may have seen this one already popping up in the snark box at the top of the column on the right

Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil influence. They deserve a place of honor with all that is good.

Friday Gun Videos

Okay, so Kim du Toit posted a link to this amazing fast-draw guy.

Well, here is a link to what appears to be a collection of CAS world-record videos. Shamelessly lifted from a reader’s post on Survivalblog: “Six shots on knockdown targets in less than five seconds starting with an empty gun laying on a table, and shells in belt!” Yeah, that got my attention.

Scroll down to shotgun and watch TG Reaper load and shoot those six shells faster than I could get half that many off from an already-loaded gun.

Lots of other impressive videos there, too.

First it was Boomershoot, then Boomershoot with a handgun, now I’ve got another crazy shooting goal to aspire to! Whee!

Scalia Calls Breyer an Idiot

…at least, that’s what I think he’s doing here.

Found on Lobowalk:

Scalia criticized those who believe in what he called the “living Constitution.”

… “But you would have to be an idiot to believe that,” Scalia said. “The Constitution is not a living organism, it is a legal document. It says something and doesn’t say other things.”

Gee, he wouldn’t be talking about his fellow Justice Breyer’s new book, would he?
