Why the Stupid Party

Is still better than the Evil Party

A coalition of former congressmen is launching a campaign to change how Americans select their president by reforming the Electoral College system, saying campaigns for the White House should be reliant on the nationwide popular vote rather than simply the outcome in a handful of swing states.

The bipartisan group plans to announce its proposal Thursday and begin a state-by-state effort to amend the Electoral College so the winner reflects the view of the country instead of an individual state or two with a close vote on Election Day. The plan would seek to eliminate the possibility of a candidate winning the popular vote but losing the election, as happened to former Vice President Al Gore in 2000.

“The time is long past to not play Electoral College roulette every four years,” former Sen. Birch Bayh, D-Ind., said in an interview. “It is a throwback to 1887.”

The plan, called the Campaign for the National Popular Vote, will be unveiled in Washington by Bayh; former Rep. John Anderson, R-Ill.; and other former members of Congress. The effort begins in Illinois, where legislation has been introduced in the General Assembly, followed by California and other states.

Even supporters, however, concede it’s an uphill battle. Democrats may stand to gain more from enacting such reforms, considering candidates could increase their margins in heavily populated urban areas that typically favor their party.

Chicago, then Los Angeles, then Frisco, then New York.

Won’t that be nice, having the uber-urban populations choosing out Chief Executive while all the fly over territory funds their idiocy.

The 17th Amendment was bad enough. This would be sheer lunacy, hence why the left supports it.

Also, if one member of the other party joins your group and that qualifies it to be ‘bi-partisan’ can we finally get No Child Left Behind classified as such by the MSM?

Boo-Hoo. Cry and Wail.

The leftists never cease to find something to whine about.

In early preparation for the 2006 elections, pro-illegal immigration people are writing reports about how hard life is for their ‘undocumented worker’ friends.

Immigrants should have fewer hurdles to citizenship and employment and more opportunities to become part of the community, even if they are here illegally, according to a recent report on the experiences of immigrants in the Northwest.

With the nation in a polarized debate about an immigration system that’s “broken,” the voices of those who have come to the United States in search of a better life are seldom heard, said Seattle attorney Carrie Tracy, who wrote the report for the Northwest Federation of Community Organizations.

(snip)

The report recommends that undocumented immigrants in the United States receive work permits and be made eligible for permanent residence and citizenship. It advocates for labor protections and civil rights equal to those afforded U.S. citizens.

(snip)

The document aims to counter legislation in Congress that would slow illegal immigration by building a fence along the U.S.-Mexico border, penalizing employers who hire unlawful immigrants and punishing smugglers, among other provisions.

To these people, it doesn’t matter how you got here or whether you came for good or ill, now that your feet are across the line, you should just be let to roam freely.

“All I want is the right to work and get treated the same as the other workers,” said Daniel, a 25-year-old from Washington quoted in the report.

Then Daniel (who isn’t “from Washington”), you should go to the immigration office and register as an immigrant. Your laziness in not doing so earns you the title of “Criminal” and a one way ticket back home, in my book.

Why is that so difficult? Because the Northwest Federation of Community Organizations says it is.

And who is the NFCO?

The federation represents community-based social and economic justice groups in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.

I see that John Iwasaki of the Seattle Times has swallowed the statist fallacy about there being more than one kind of Justice hook, line and sinker.

RNS Quote of the Day

Friedrich Engels alleged: “The workers vegetated throughout a passably comfortable existence, leading a righteous and peaceful life in all piety and probity, and their material position was far batter off than hteir successors.”

This was written of an age characterized by staggeringly high mortality rates, especially among children, crowded towns and villages untouched by sanitation and notoriously high gin consumption. The working class diet consisted mainly of oatmeal, milk, cheese and beer; while bread, potatoes, coffee, tea, sugar and meat were still expenive luxuries. Bathing was infrequent and laundering was a rarity because soap was so costly; and clothing, which had to last a decade or a generation, would not last if washed too often.

The Soundboard: Those are the breaks

Last week we closed up the Drum and Bass lesson. I forgot to include a short history of the style in either of the weeks that it was featured, mostly due to my being tired after a long night at work. I’ll just say this, Acid Jazz evolved and branched into D&B.

Now, I’d love to whip up some Acid Jazz here, but seeing as how I like y’all and would hate to see good people arrested for running around with your respective shirts wrapped around your heads screaming ‘Ave Maria’ at the top of your lungs, I’ll refrain. That and I doubt I have all that many female readers, so what would be the point?

This week I’m going to try and ease y’all into a style called “House”. This is the style you’d hear in most clubs if you ever got the urge to go to an overpriced meat-market with watered down drinks. I prefer shows myself, but with me getting grumpy in my old age, elbowing my way through a crowd could prove fatal for some rude club kids and I stay home.

“House” music evolves and then regresses in cycles every couple years, as “the old guard” move on and “the new schoolers” take over only to turn into “the old guard” in a few short months. I’ll listen to the evolving stuff, but I carry holy water to guard against the regression times, which unfortunately is what is about to happen here in a couple months if it hasn’t already started.

House music started in the 70’s with the rise of disco. The death of disco was actually a good thing for reasons other than everyone was using the same drum track in that the records stayed in the hands of urban kids who got creative with the things and started using the emerging electronics technology to sample them into ‘Breaks’, that they would mix together and take to the underground clubs of the day.

You may remember ‘Breakdancing’ from the early 80’s, well, that came from kids trying to impress their friends with their new moves while dancing over the breaks.

And despite the lack of corny movies, breakdancing and ‘BreakBeat’ music are still around and popular in more than a few circles.

But we’ll go there in the near future. Today, were going back, way back, to 1982 with a mega mix of the seminal tune of that helped along the evolution of rap.

Afrika Bambaataa – Planet Rock (Classic Mix)

Now, if you’re looking for the original version of this tune, you’ll have to go here and buy it. While I enjoy a decent amount of rap and hip hop, one of the things I absolutely cannot stand is when some loudmouth MC or MC’s go and ruin a good bit of sampling and programming with their braggadocio, so you will find that this mix contains very few vocals.

And that concludes the longest Soundboard post I think I’ve ever written (and believe it or not, I left an assload of history out).

Good Eatin’

Seattle’s Woodland Park has an infestation of rabbits. It is assumed that they were released by some well-meaning dipstick who thought he was doing his bunnies a favor.

A former Chairman of the Seattle Animal Control Commision, Keith Gormezano, wrote a letter to the editor of the Seattle Times last weekend, suggesting that the rabbits be trapped, killed and served up in the ‘homeless’ shelters to Seattle’s large population of people unwilling to work.

It sounded, to me anyway, like two problems could be solved at once. Bums fed / annoying rabbit infestation cleared.

But Seattle being Seatlle, some twit had to write up her own letter to the editor yesterday, and whine about how “flabbergasted” she was at Gormezano’s idea. She also had this question to ask:

I wonder if the same idea should apply to ducks, geese and other animals inhabiting the park?

To which my answer would be: Hell Yes!!!

Every year, tens of thousands of Canadian Geese fly into cities and towns of the great northwest, including Seattle, land, take over the local parks and then shit everywhere. The paved walkways become unsafe to walk on because they are so slippery with goose poo. Also, the water in the park lakes gets so infestied with the crap that they are closed for swimming for a goodly portion of the summer by the various parks adminstrations.

The current plan for the geese is to either pay someone to bring their dog/s to the park and chase the geese away to other parks (it is illegal for a private individual’s canine to chase the geese in Seattle) or to CO gas them to death after trapping them in sealed metal boxes.

My only reservation about feeding the vagrants a steady diet of rabbit, goose and duck would be that the word would get out and they’d be coming from across the country to eat at “The Shelter Buffet”.

RNS Quote of the Day

To appreciate the benefits that capitalism brought to women, one must compare their status under capitalism with their condition in the preceding centuries. But the 19th Century critics of capitalism di not do this; instead, they distorted and falsified history, glamorizing the past and disparaging everything modern by contrast.

For instance, Robert Oastler, one of the most fanatical 19th Century enemies of capitalism, claimed that everyone was better off spiritually and materially in the Middle Ages than in the early 19th Century. Describing medieval England, Oastler rhapsodized about the lost golden age: “Oh, what a beautiful ship was England once! She was well built, well manned, well provisioned, well rigged! All were merry, cheerful and happy on board!”

This was said of centuries in which the bulk of the population were peasants in a servile condition, bound by status, not free to change their mode of life or to move from their birthplace, when people had only the promise of of happiness in the life beyond the grave to succor them against decimating plagues, recurring famines and, at best, half-filled stomachs; when people lived in homes so infested with dirt and vermin that one historian’s verdict about these homes was: ” From a health point of view, the only thing to be said in their favor was that they burned down very easily.”

The Effects of the Industrial Revolution on Women and Children – Robert Hessen (1962)

I like to think of this as a history lesson on the modern day representatives of Oastler, namely the enviro-nutjob movement. Also known as those who would like to see a return of serfdom, with the people serving their betters in government. Instead of Lords and Ladies, they would have us serving under regional Dictocrats.

Say it ain’t so…

I don’t know about you, but I know I must have seen this particular cover as a kid, and I sure didn’t see the implication in it he does.

Has our culture changed that much for the worse in twenty years that this is the conclusion we jump to? I mean, there’s always been this undercurrent, but that character’s spooky anyway. But this is an American icon!

Sick, man, just sick.

A No-Prize for anyone who knows what the actual storyline was about in this issue. I’m pretty damn sure it wasn’t child rape, but then DC did some weird subjects during their “relevant” period in the ’70s, so I (yeesh) could be wrong….

Update: The No-Prize goes to Kristopher, who pointed in comments to this site. Your intrepid blogger needed some down time after coming back from court this afternoon, so I diligently searched this site until I found the original cover, with the original word balloon. Here it is (click for bigger, to read what the boy’s crying about):

Ha! That wasn’t so bad! Supes’ sexual integrity remains intact!

Although that site sure has a lot of cover art that might indicate otherwise. Very funny stuff, of the snort-milk-on-keyboard variety. Good catch, Kristopher!

Oh, That Liberal Media

Lately, on the left wing blogs, there have been multiple posts stating that they now have proof that there is a “right wing bias” in the media.

Their proof? The Lewinski scandal coverage and that TV talk shows had a moderate majority of right wing pundits on starting around 1998. They completely miss the fact that 1. Sex Sells Ad Time, and 2. The two events may have coincided.

Anything for a fantasy, I guess.

But John the Poor Schmuck has found a reminder of the real, actual proof of a left wing bias media.

Go read this AFP article on Yahoo news before they change it.

And I quote:

Pentagon tagged terror ringleader 13 times pre-9/11: lawmaker

A secret US military intelligence unit had terrorist ringleader Mohammed Atta in its cross-hairs before the September 11, 2001 attacks 13 times, a congressman claimed, citing the unit’s records.

(snip)

Weldon, vice chairman of the House Armed Services and Homeland Security Committee, spoke on the eve of a House Armed Services joint subcommittee hearing on “Able Danger” which he has initiated.

The House representative has pressured Congress and the Pentagon to investigate “Able Danger” since August, arguing that government officials became aware of Atta’s ties to Al-Qaeda earlier than admitted.

Weldon said he now had proof there had been several attempts to transfer the information to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, but they were blocked by lawyers for the administration of President George W. Bush.

“We have information that will be testified to under oath that there were attempts to transfer information to the FBI on at least three occasions, and on all three of those occasions in September of 2000, lawyers within the administration denied those meetings from taking place,” he said.

I really hope they run with this before doing the math.

The National Peoples Radio

Ken Wheaton describes the templates used by NPR news crew on WNYC

1. International News. Something horrible happened in the world today and
A) It was America’s fault.
B) America intervened, making it worse.
C) America didn’t intervene, making it worse.
D) America was slow to respond, making it worse.
E) On the slim chance that America had nothing to do with it, Israel did.

2. Domestic news.
A) People are suffering in America because the government programs failed them.
B) We need more money to fund government programs.

How odd, that sounds exactly like the NPR news casts out of my local KPLU

They know not of what they speak

The Democrats are looking to try and take back the House, the Senate or both in the elections at the end of this year. If you read through any of the major left wing blogs or even the DNC site itself, they talk about how they are going to be so unified that they’ll be undefeatable.

I wonder if this is going to be party of their ‘Unified Platform’?

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jim Davis compared the way Republicans run Florida to the way Fidel Castro runs Cuba as the state party rallied supporters Tuesday for the upcoming election.

I really hope it is as it’ll will show the undecideds just how completely ignorant they are of how the world truly is.

Tom Gallagher, Florida’s CFO and gubernatorial hopefull when Jeb runs into the state’s term limits had the truth about Cuba to say,

“Anyone who understands the true nature of Fidel Castro’s brutality would know better than to make the remarks Jim Davis made today,” he said. “Fidel Castro is a murderer, responsible for the imprisonment, torture and execution of thousands of his own people, and thousands of Cuban-Americans across Florida have suffered greatly due to his brutal dictatorship.”

And the Dems wonder why they don’t get a majority of the Cuban community’s vote.
