Misplaced Priorities

The Seattle School District is broke. They mismanaged their money to the extent where they are having to close some schools. They spent even more money over a period of several months to try and figure out a list of proposed schools to be closed. That list came out last week.

There was the expected hue and cry of “You can’t close my kid’s school” from the various parents of children and the district and the parents will now spend even more months and even more money arguing as to why this school or that school will be closed. But one of the strange offspring of this already heated topic is about the names of the schools to be closed.

One of the schools proposed for closure was named after Martin Luther King Junior and another was named after Thurgood Marshall. And, you guessed it, the ‘minority rights groups’ have fired up their individual bases and declared this a racial issue.

Maybe if the ‘minority rights groups’ had stuck their heads into the problem of pooly performing schools named after King and Marshall before the decision to commit to school closures they wouldn’t have a damn thing to whine about?

But then again, this is Seattle; where the school district’s definition of racism is as follows:

Racism: The systematic subordination of members of targeted racial groups who have relatively little social power in the United States (Blacks, Latino/as, Native Americans, and Asians), by the members of the agent racial group who have relatively more social power (Whites). The subordination is supported by the actions of individuals, cultural norms and values, and the institutional structures and practices of society.

You can read that as many times as you want, but you will still come to the same conclusion: Only White People Can Be Racist

Quote found at Andrew’s Dad blog

But that definition shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone living in Seattle, because in September of 2000 the district cut the ribbon on a state of the art school called “The African American Academy” .

If you follow that link, you’ll read that, as of 2002, less than 45 of the 528 (8% to be exact) Pre-School through 8th grade students attending The Academy weren’t of ‘African American’ heritage. That is a statistic that has stayed true all the way up to the 2005-2006 school year, btw.

All paid for by Seattle taxpayers.

I’m glad there aren’t any more racial preferences in Seattle. At least not accoring to the district’s definition.

A definition, I might add, that they are presenting to tens of thousands of children as fact. Gives you a reason to look up and see what your chilluns are being taught about racism, don’t it?

No More Pity

If NOLA gets hit again, and the state, county and city leadership can’t handle the problem AGAIN, then I will have no pity and not one penny of my hard earned cash will go their way, because of this

I’d rather they just change their name

In case you don’t stop by the ‘Stop the ACLU’ blog frequently, and you really should, the ACLU (insert cleverly modified moniker here) has decided that people crossing America’s souther border illegally, meaning against every immigration law on the books, are “Innocent” pawns in need of their protection.

As Congress moves forward to reform our nation’s immigration laws, the ACLU said the U.S. must reject measures that threaten to increase the bloodshed on our borders. “Innocent peoples’ lives and liberty should not be threatened by this dangerous deployment,” said ACLU Director Anthony Romero.

I agree with Mr. Romero, that innocent people’s lives will be put threatened on this deployment to the southern border; members of the National Guard will be having to live in extreme environs, inhabited by poisonous reptiles and arachnids, while trying to avoid getting shot at by smugglers of both people and narcotics as well as the possibility of some nutjob member of the Mexican armed forces decides that he doesn’t like our men and women stopping his brethren unloading on them.

But for some odd reason, I’m pretty sure those aren’t the people Romero is speaking of. Proving that he should STFU and do some reading of pertinent legal documents.

On another note, if the Mexican Army and/or the drugrunners do start firing on our Guardsmen and women, is anyone willing to take bets on how long before the American left actually come out with professionally made signs demanding we withdraw from the border (ie. “No Blood for Immigration”, etc).

Or would we rather start taking bets at how many incidents we’ll have before Bush just pulls them off ‘For Their Own Safety’?

It Takes a Petty Child to Raze a Village

Clever line from Michael Z. Williamson’s The Weapon. It’s kind of like a cross between Heinlein’s Starship Troopers and Friday and Haldeman’s There Is No Darkness, but really long. With the UN as the enemy, not aliens. Oh yeah, and the hero ends up creating a cell of sleeper agents on Earth, then destroying Earth’s infrastructure and billions of people when Earth attacks his homeworld. But he’s not a terrorist, oh no.

Well written, and getting a lot of buzz in the blogosphere, but a very odd book.

Update: the author (!!) has a post this morning about weapons caching on Survivalblog. And The Weapon is apparently the author’s attempt to show the war from the “other side” of the one shown in his previous novel, Freehold. I’ll have to check that one out next.

This is Weird

Lionel Richie seems to be as hot in the Arab world, particularly Iraq, as David Hasselhoff was in Germany.

Why?

He’s a One Bag Man

Actaully, that should read “I’m a one bag man” because that was all I walked out with from the gun show.

I have been abusing my concealed-carry gun belts by wearing them to work my daily-wear web belts went MIA after the move (they’re in the damn house somewhere, I just can’t find them), so I bought a pair of new, non-chinese made, subdued buckle models in blue. Other than that, the only thing I snagged up was a new factory EAA Witness 45ACP mag at $10 under retail for a co-worker.

I met up with the Heartless Libertarian before entering the Western Washington Fairgrounds in Puyallup (pronounced: pew-all-up, which is appropriate because they used to do alot of dairy in that town) where the Washington Arms Collectors were having their show.

HL is a really good guy who knows his surplus rifles. In fact, he made an excellent buy yesterday that completed a trifecta for him, but you’ll have to wait until the man is ready to show it off to find out what it is.

HL and I are looking into holding a mainly rifle Blogger Blastorama around the end of June/first part of July at the Renton Fish and Game rifle range. Start keeping an eye on your calenders, we should have the date picked out here soon.

HL also got to meet Grimm yesterday. As did a couple of hefty wimmin who almost didn’t want to wait for me to exit my parking spot. The only reason it was a miss instead of a hit was because of some fancy footwork on my part. Their Mazda 626 would have made a nice hood ornament for Grimm though.

When I got home I found that the Analog Wife had gone shopping while I was at the show (it’s only fair I guess) and not only picked up the first Harry Potter book for me, but she had also found a copy of the DVD “The Aristocrats”. If you like a good dirty joke, and I mean a quite probably excrucitingly filthy joke, this DVD is for you. Don’t rent it, just go buy it. You’ll watch it over and over again. Hell, I watched it twice last night and laughed so hard throughout both showings that the wife thought I had gone mad.

It’s All Relative

Seeing as how the Sister of All Booty’s reveal was so popular yesterday, I made a call to a certain person to make sure that she didn’t mind getting one as well.

I ran into this woman during my quest two years back. I had thought I had actually found The Mother of All Booty and was contemplating what I would do with my life until she finally told me that she was not The Mother, but that she was The Mother’s half sister.

So know, I hope you will remember the day you were finally able to see The Auntie of All Booty.

I know I will.

Guess Where I’m Going Today

Take me out to the gunshow,

Take me out with the crowds.

Buy me some ammo and magazines,

There’s more rifles here than I’ve e-ver seen.

I’ll pick up gear and some gun parts,

I’ll have to haggle, I know,

‘Cause it’s one-two-three bags of stuff from the old, gun, show!

See ya later, tater.

We’re not banking starboard

Hell, we’re not even levelling out from our hard turn to port. Unless you’re Dickie Durbin.

James Taranto BOTW:

Earlier this week, the Senate approved an amendment to the immigration bill “to build 370 miles of triple-layered fencing along the Mexican border,” reports the Associated Press. The AP quotes one senator who took offense at the defense:

“What we have here has become a symbol for the right wing in American politics,” countered Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill. He said if the proposal passed, “our relationship with Mexico would come down to a barrier between our two countries.”

The vote to build the fence was 83-16. Here is a partial list of senators who voted sí: Joe Biden, Barbara Boxer, Hillary Clinton, Mark Dayton, Tom Harkin, John Kerry, Pat Leahy, Carl Levin, Barbara Mikulski, Harry Reid, Charles Schumer, Debbie Stabenow and Ron Wyden.

If the right wing gets any more crowded, the whole plane is liable to tip over!

A Quest

As The Kid mentioned last Sunday, I did what I normally do every year around that holiday, I went searching for The Mother of All Booty.

Sadly, once again, I failed in my quest to find my prize. I’m not too horribly crushed by the lack of reaching that goal; after all, I can only spend one day in my quest. Also, as part of my pledge, I will have to quit teaching at the Occidental Tush Institute when I find The Mother of All Booty, so life isn’t all bad.

While I was not able to find The Mother, I did not fail completely.

I found the Sister of All Booty.
