That would be different

I think I’d like to see this

What would the Earth be like if it was the shape of a donut?

According to the laws of physics, a planet the shape of a donut, or toroid, could actually exist — but it’s extremely unlikely to ever form naturally. But what if an advanced alien civilization decided to build one? What properties would a toroid-Earth exhibit? And what would life be like?

To date, astronomers have catalogued over 1,000 exoplanets — some of them rocky and parked within their host star’s habitable zone. But a good… Read…

One question that came up when I published my Double Earth analysis was “What about a toroidal Earth?” This is by no means a new question, and there has been some lengthy discussions online and earlier modelling. But being a do-it-yourself person I decided to try to analyze it on my own.

But maybe not to visit. RTWT.

‘Tis the Season

Greetings from frozen Michigan.

A couple of weeks ago I sent David a link to a site I thought was kinda neat called “icecastles.com“, where a gentleman had built massive ice castles by hand. Embedded in the linked page was a YouTube video starring a violinist named Lindsey Stirling, whom I had not been familiar with at the time. I was so taken by the video that I spent the next couple of hours viewing several of her videos on the YT site.

I now feel a sense of affirmation as I have been creating my own “ice castle” right here at the Great Lakes homestead over the last few polar vortexes:

from December

Two months, a slight bit of melt plus I don’t know how much more H2O from the injured spigot. The next quarterly water bill should be quite an eye opener.

We purchased and moved into this house last summer and though I had it “inspected”, the faulty spigot remained anonymous until I happened to walk around the corner of the house in December and saw my creation (this side of the house is without windows and I am embarrassed to admit that I let way too much time pass between walk-arounds to check the entire house perimeter).

I’ve let this go so far because the inside of the house is dry with no issues (yet). The basement is finished with sheet rock on both ceiling and walls where this line is located. I’ve found no shut-off valve specific to this spigot and only the whole house water supply shut-off to stop flow. I’ll get around to calling a plumber and having this looked at and pay him to tell me to break sections of drywall down until I can locate a shut-off. If there are better approaches, I’m eager to hear them.

Oh well, life happens and it looks like Lake Superior may do one of its rare freeze-overs this year and I feel bad for the hard core Corvette affectionados out there.

Looking forward to Boomershoot and seeing the West again.

Later,

D

Waste of time and money

Poor training leads to poor responses.

So, when the Ohio National Guard gets trained that the likely terrorists are 2nd Amendment supporters poisoning student’s food and it turns out that the their next response is to a series of bombings in shopping malls, and they respond poorly, exactly who should get the blame?

And really, if they keep insisting that folks such as myself are terrorists, how long until I just give in and listen to them?

Not even the next best substitute

In the “Education Life” section of last Sunday’s NYT they printed an article titled “If She Can’t Stop Him, YOU CAN. Bystander intervention may be the best hope to reduce sexual assault on campus.”

Minding The Campus’ John Leo writes about how this misguided campaign is actually demeaning to both men and women.

What he doesn’t write about is how, in the interest of “safety”, the government has removed the actual “best hope” and the most effective anti-rape tool from the hands of both women and by-standers. Leaving them open to both an initial attack, as well as retaliation.

Please, keep prosperity from us!

I thought left wing activists were all for progress?

The Trader Joe’s grocery-store chain has dropped a plan to open a new store in the heart of the city’s historically African-American neighborhood after activists said the development would price black residents out of the area.

The grocer, whose stores are found in urban neighborhoods across the nation, said Monday it wouldn’t press its plan, given community resistance, The Oregonian reported.

“We open a limited number of stores each year, in communities across the country,” it said in a statement. “We run neighborhood stores, and our approach is simple: If a neighborhood does not want a Trader Joe’s, we understand, and we won’t open the store in question.”

Higher property values, an end to the “urban food desert” and “living wage” jobs?

Just what were these folks afraid of? Being able to sell their homes for more than they bought them for?

The future is (almost) now

Behold, a bounty!

NASA is now working with private companies to take the first steps in exploring the moon for valuable resources like helium 3 and rare earth metals.

Initial proposals are due tomorrow for the Lunar Cargo Transportation and Landing by Soft Touchdown program (CATALYST). One or more private companies will win a contract to build prospecting robots, the first step toward mining the moon.

The contract will be a “no funds exchanged” Space Agreement Act, which means the government will not be directly funding the effort, but will receive NASA support. Final proposals are due on March 17th, 2014. NASA has not said when it will announce the winner.

Probably not until our current executive has left office.

FOX needs to get in with these private companies so that they can broadcast the first few days of each of the mining robots. It’ll drive the eco-socialists insane!

Remember kids

Having only one standard is bad.

CNN’s Sally Kohn: Homophobic Russia put on “the gayest opening ceremony ever!”

She can say that, because she is a lesbian. If any of us hetero oppressors made that statement, you can guarantee we’d make the front page of the HuffPo.
