I was having a silent conversation with myself earlier this week.

I said to myself “Professor Booty, why don’t you just stay on this beatuiful island until the beginning of the upcoming school year?”

I didn’t reply, because answering the questions posed by the voice in your head is a sign of insanity.

When a reply didn’t arrive, I said to myself again “Professor Booty, why don’t you get ahold of Dean Beras (Headmaster of the Occidental Tush Institute) and ask him to transfer all of your classes to this wonderful place?”

Again, I did not answer. But I did smile.

I’m not sure if the smile was because of the thought of being able to conduct classes on the beach or if it was because I knew just how long I was going to have to spend in the shower with Miss Carine getting all that sand washed off.

Shooting at the Seattle Jewish Federation Building

One person dead. Up to a half dozen wounded depending on who you listen to.

Story here.

Raw video here and here

While the story talks about the suspect in custody being a Pakistani man with a previously known criminal background, the guy in cuffs in the first video looks to be a middle aged white guy, so we’ll see.

There is an area 6-8 blocks large that has been cordoned off while the Seattle PD look for a possible second suspect.

In the meanwhile, the bicycling jackasses who like to block traffic, start fights and assault police officers, ‘Critical Mass’, are continuing their end of every month rally just a few blocks away from the cordoned off area.

How nice of them.

UPDATE: According the the TV news, one of the wounded is now telling police that the man in custody walked in and told the person at the front desk that ‘he was an American Muslim who was angry at Israel’ before he started shooting.

I’ll be waiting with bated breath

Probably for a very long time, until the American Left looks across the Atlantic and sees the EU member countries patrolling the Mediterranean Sea for illegal immigrants from North Africa

European officials are preparing to launch sea patrols around Spain’s Canary Islands to stem the flow of illegal immigrants trying to get to Europe.

Waves of Africans have been pouring onto the Spanish islands, with more than 11,000 from the continent’s poorest countries making the dangerous trip so far this year – doubleing the total whole for 2005.

EU leaders say the surveillance patrols will begin in a few weeks as part of an initial emergency plan “to prevent and divert ships” trying to get to the islands.

The mission will include two airplanes and four boats for seven weeks and would be based out of the Canary Islands.

Similar patrols have been agreed for the Mediterranean island of Malta, which, along with Italy and Spain, have appealed for the EU to draw up permanent rapid reaction teams to bolster surveillance of Europe’s southern maritime borders.

Say it with me now, just like the pro-illegal immigration supporters would:

“But they only want to come there to work!!!!!”

I find it quite funny that Spain, with their recently elected uber-socialist head of state, has appealed to the EU for the exact same thing that Congressional Democrats are trying to block.

They’ve got opinions

It isn’t the least bit astonishing that the Seattle Times printed Letters to the Editor on the decision by the Supreme Court of Washington to uphold the State’s Defense of Marriage Act.

Nor is it at all astonishing that every one of the letters they printed yesterday were from people who didn’t like the court’s decision, as you can see here.

Today however, the Times finally decided to show both sides of the argument, by printing two letters from each. How kind of them.

I often go through the Letters to the Editor section to show you the absurdity in this town, but today I would like to show you a Letter that made me say “Damn, I wish I’d written that”.

Editor, The Times:

I am perplexed by The Times’ discontent with the state Supreme Court’s decision. The courts do not exist to save us from ourselves or to fix legislative results. They are not the great diviners and solvers of every social issue. They are by constitutional definition conservative bodies. They should carefully guard against substituting their own preferences for the law and the Constitution.

In this case, the state Supreme Court lived up to its mandate.

In fact, the Washington state Supreme Court did the citizens a great favor. By declining to wave a magic wand over the word “marriage” and redefine it to mean something that it has never meant throughout all of recorded human history, the justices have provided the opportunity for the legislative process to work as it was intended.

Wholesale redefining of terms cheapens the currency of language and distorts debate. Any expansion or redefinition of marriage is serious business properly left to legislation or perhaps the constitutional-amendment process.

When courts intrude into the legislative sphere in complex, highly charged issues where the legislative history is clear and Constitution silent, they create controversy and conflict that go on for generations. This is perhaps the greatest lesson to be learned from Roe v. Wade.

There will be some kind of legal resolution to the issue of gay relationships. I think a fully debated, legislative solution offers the best hope of something all citizens can live with going into the future. The legislators will not have a court decision to hide behind. The wisdom of everyday people will become part of the final equation through open public debate.

This is something to cheer about.

Frank Klapach, Port Orchard

In a couple weeks time, the Analog Wife and I will be travelling to the Port Orchard area to look into the prospect of purchasing our next residence there. I will certainly feel in better company if more Constitution-minded folks like Mr. Klapach live there.

The Middle East from the Left

Yes, I got my feet wet in the swamps of the Kos Kids Animal Farm and Petting Zoo again, but only because what I find there are so damnably hilarious.

First up, the “Delicate Monster”:

Maybe Benjamin Franklin had it right…insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.  Not that we would expect anyone in this administration to notice, but with each errant bomb that kills more Lebanese children, the U.S. position becomes less defensible and the Israeli position becomes more insane–and so does our own position. Why?

Benjamin Franklin was right; doing the same thing over and over is crazy, which is why we’re not demanding Israel slow down the military forces and submit to a cease-fire.

That has been done over and over and over again and were currently looking at the results: Terrorists killing innocent Israeli civilians because Hezbollah is bent on genocide.

So, because we’ve seen what happens when Israel kicks ass (See Jordan and Egypt), we’re letting them do it their way.

Next up, I just had to post this one to see if I’m seeing it correctly.

The Baculum King quoted this news story about cops infiltrating an anti-war group,

Two Oakland police officers working undercover at an anti-war protest in May 2003 got themselves elected to leadership positions in an effort to influence the demonstration, documents released Thursday show.

He then goes on to suggest that

I think we should expand this principle to Iraq, see if we can’t work our people into leadership positions within the insurgency.

I cannot really tell what he means by this; either he wants to control the insurgents to calm them or just to be a leader, but even all the way through the comments, nothing about his motives for this plan are alluded to, they only bitch about COINTELPRO.

However, I did find it funny that the folks yakking about this are probable 90% middle class white folks who wouldn’t blend into any ME insurgent group well at all.

Despite

What with my previous, less than flattering posts here about the past decisions of the Supreme Court of Washington State, I have to say a big thank you to the Justices for their 5-4 decision yesterday in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act.

As I said yesterday, as well as previous to that, courts have no right in writing law, only in interpreting it. This decision will lead to a more peacable State of Washington, in regards to this issue. It has shown those who wish to push the politics they can’t get passed via the people through the judiciary that they will have to actually do some legwork to legalize same-sex marriages is Washington.

In fact, if they would only try to get a Citizens Initiative movement going, not only would I sign the petition, when it made it to the ballot, I would vote for it.

Here in Washington, only around 250,000 signatures are necessary to get an Initiative onto the ballot, and if the organizers of this issue cannot get that many signatures, what with the Pride Parade right before singature turn in time, then they really should just STFU about it.

Which really makes me wonder whether it was laziness or if they really don’t think the votes, since they tried to push it through the courts first.

The news story about the decision is here

There are a number of briefs on this decision, due to a number of justices deciding to not only sign onto the brief of the side they decided with, but also their own. It is a bit dry, but if you’re interested, they are here in pdf form.

Polls

Recent polling shows that the confidence of the Looney Left and the Dems about their chances this November may be just a lot of Greenhouse Effect Causing Gas

From a WaPo/ABC News poll:

The problem for Pelosi is that, despite all the claims of Republican wrong-headedness, there is not enough evidence to suggest firmly any Democratic advantage on the war, and centrist and liberal Democrats disagree on how much to make the war an issue. While 59 percent of Americans told an Associated Press poll this month that they disapproved of President Bush’s handling of Iraq, 64 percent disapproved of the Democrats’ handling of it. While 62 percent of Americans told a Washington Post/ABC News poll last month that they disapproved of Bush’s handling of the war, an even higher percentage of respondents, 71 percent, said the Democrats do not offer clear alternatives.

Found at Right Thinking

And another poll from WashTimes/Harris:

Seventy-two percent believe that the Iraqis are better off now than they were under Saddam Hussein (slightly down from February 2005 when 76 percent said this was true).

Just over half (55%) think history will give the U.S. credit for bringing freedom and democracy to Iraq (down substantially from 64% in February 2005).

Sixty-four percent say it is true that Saddam Hussein had strong links to Al Qaeda (the same as 64% in February 2005).

If Americans know, deep down, that our soldier’s sacrifices in Iraq will turn out for the better good, it doesn’t wholly matter what they think of Bush, they’ll stick to their guns.

I found this poll via a moonbat site who found it via the CalPundit, Kevin Drum’s blog at Washington Monthly and if you follow those links, you’ll see that, just as the “intellectual” from yesterday who said that people who wanted the immigration laws in this country enforced weren’t smart enough to think otherwise, Drum and the moonbat ‘DemFromCT’ both agree that anyone who believes as these polls describe is just too stupid to know better.

If I wasn’t laughing so hard, I might take offence at their words.

I truly find their scoffing at the stat of how many Americans think Iraq and the Iraqi people are better off now than under Saddam the most hilarious.

If the left would rather inflict Hussein upon the Iraqi people than to have the sectarian fighting, then they are not just stupid, they’re pitiable. The Shia and the Sunnis would have to double their bodycount to even get close to the rate at which Saddam and his murderous sons were killing their countrymen. And it wasn’t random gunfire or car bombs being used then, it was industrialized torture.

And NO ONE was fighting back against Saddam. At least now the Iraqi people have an opportunity to kill those who would kill them.

That’ll be the Day

Actually, today will be the day that the Supreme Court of Washington State is to deliver their ruling on same-sex marriage in Washington State.

As I’ve said before here, I personally don’t care about the issue one way or the other, I just don’t want to be told by a judicial office what is going to be law in my state of residence. They supposed to interpret the law, not define it.

My greatest hope, and I don’t even think it is possible, is for the court to demand that it be put to a vote of the people of Washington. Sort of a “Guiness Book of World Records Jury of Peers”.

We’ll see.

Because we’re not nuanced

Kos inmate “snafubar” says that the only reason some people in America want to close off employment to illegal aliens is because we are too stupid.

I live in Hazleton, PA, and if you have ever heard of it that’s only because our town has been accused of being the only Nazi state in the country because last week our mayor passed a city ordinance punishing landlords and employers who hire and give housing to illegal immigrants. These are simple minded people, and they are not alone.

What I am saying to you is that if Madison Avenue can convince people to buy a particular brand of cereal based on the graphics on the box and because they like the cool characters in the cartoon advertising on Saturday morning even when they don’t like the taste, we (the intellectuals) are in real trouble if we are trying to use logic, reason, and facts to sway public opinion.

People in this country don’t want nuanced examination of all the possibilities, they’re too simple minded. Look around you. Seriously – the reason the Republican party will win in 2006 and 2008 is because they have learned how to manipulate the pathos, knowing that the ethos and the logos are lost on most people anyway. Think about that. George Carlin asked us twenty years ago to “Think about how dumb the average guy is, then realize that half of them are dumber than that”. Ouch.

I’m not exactly sure what “logic, reason and facts” the liberal left had in the illegal immigration debate, though this guy is absolutely positive they must have had some.

Make sure you check out the poll at the bottom of the diary. It looks like the other folks there agree.

How nice of them.

W-w-w-what?!?

DANEgerous brings us the news that makes us happy and makes the eco-socialist cult cry

It’s a rather striking irony that, as our air grows cleaner, environmentalists’ complaints grow louder. Since 2001, they’ve been screaming that President Bush is “rolling back the Clean Air Act,” and that the resulting increase in air pollution will kill people by the thousands. Instead, every category of air pollution has fallen during the Bush years, with 2003, 2004, and 2005 showing the lowest levels of harmful ozone and particulates in the air since the monitoring of air pollution began in the 1960s. What exactly is going on?
…
A new report from the National Academy of Science concludes that the Bush system will likely prove just as effective in lowering air pollution as the regulation- and lawsuit-happy Clinton approach — and it will do so at a much lower cost.

One more time! Just like the ELFers!
