Because we’re not nuanced

Kos inmate “snafubar” says that the only reason some people in America want to close off employment to illegal aliens is because we are too stupid.

I live in Hazleton, PA, and if you have ever heard of it that’s only because our town has been accused of being the only Nazi state in the country because last week our mayor passed a city ordinance punishing landlords and employers who hire and give housing to illegal immigrants. These are simple minded people, and they are not alone.

What I am saying to you is that if Madison Avenue can convince people to buy a particular brand of cereal based on the graphics on the box and because they like the cool characters in the cartoon advertising on Saturday morning even when they don’t like the taste, we (the intellectuals) are in real trouble if we are trying to use logic, reason, and facts to sway public opinion.

People in this country don’t want nuanced examination of all the possibilities, they’re too simple minded. Look around you. Seriously – the reason the Republican party will win in 2006 and 2008 is because they have learned how to manipulate the pathos, knowing that the ethos and the logos are lost on most people anyway. Think about that. George Carlin asked us twenty years ago to “Think about how dumb the average guy is, then realize that half of them are dumber than that”. Ouch.

I’m not exactly sure what “logic, reason and facts” the liberal left had in the illegal immigration debate, though this guy is absolutely positive they must have had some.

Make sure you check out the poll at the bottom of the diary. It looks like the other folks there agree.

How nice of them.

The average person I know that refers to themself as an “intellectual” is actually a fucking retard. They just repeat the same platitudes as everyone else and then claim that they are independent thinkers. And cry a lot.

Try to explain a nuanced, diverse set of beliefs (for example, I abandoned a friend who couldn’t process the idea that I don’t think that gay marriage should be illegal but I personally think that the concept is pointless) and watch them short out.

As a self-proclaimed intellectual, I must say that I’m also self-effacing and humble, like the rest of the self-proclaimed intellectuals.
