Last Night at Work

Was interesting, to say the least.

To start it all off, at 1800, I punched in at my main office, gathered up my work and drove on down to the transfer station, where I work until 0100. Trying to work down there is a PITA: The computers are slow, it stinks to high heaven and I’m constantly being interrupted to scale someone in or out. But duty calls so I’m there.

At around 2300, one of the third party guys rolls up to the outbound scale window to weight out. I open the window to make sure what he originally said was in the box was actually what was in the box. He confirms and I turn to the scale computer to complete his ticket.

Unlike the inboud window, the outbound window is like the ones at a fast-food drive through and it closes by itself. I usually find this annoying, having to open the window every time I want to hand something out or retrieve something, but last night, I gained a new respect for it.

Right after I turned to the scale computer and the window clicked shut, I hear a ‘pop’ noise and a splash against the window. A hose from one of the hydraulic lines on the truck had burst and sprayed hot hydraulic fluid from the concrete and up over the roof of the scalehouse.

I wear steel toe and steel footbed shoes because I have duties that require them. I do not have goggles or a facemask to protect me from something like this.

So, at 0100, I go back to my office with my box of completed work to finish off the rest of my tasks. This is where the night turns goofy.

Well,

Aren’t we some raccoon killin’ mofos.

Thankee all for yesterday’s “Top Ten ways to rid your yard of pesky varmits who wear masks“. I’m hoping that a solution found here will be of use to someone in need of killing themselves a scavenging, cat-murdering pain in the kiester.

If I would check my emails more often, I’d have linked the original story from the local paper, The Olympian, that the Analog Mom sent me. As the she stated in the comments, the paper allows comments from readers as well, and some of them are quite laughable (it is Olympia after all, and there are large quantities of ALF/ELF/PeTA types down thar).

FYI: The comments are backwards (to go with the socialist mindset in Olympia, I guess), with the most recent at the top, so scroll all the way to the bottom to start the goofiness.

You’ve gotta be fooking kiddin’ me

So I’m running through the left wing blogs last night on my lunch break and I keep seeing posts about this supposedly racist ad being run by the National Republican Senatorial Campaign in the race in Rhode Island.

Sadly, the IE browser on the work computers won’t run any on-line video (and I can’t upgrade the browser or switch it to Mozilla either), so I cut and paste the URL and take it home with me on my thumbdrive.

I just got home and I just watched it and you have got to be fooking kidding me.

Go here, burn their bandwidth, and watch the thing and tell me what is racist about it.

For those without the will to click, the entire subject of the ad talks about some idiot mayor who OK’d the acceptance of Mexican Metricular Consular cards, perhaps the most easily forged piece of psuedo official government ID on the continent.

If it is racist to say that the acceptance of Mexican MC cards is a bad idea, then I guess that the majority of people in the US are racists.

This whole slew of charges against Republicans, calling them racists, from George Allen to the guy in Florida to now this is just a big bowl of horsehockey. I’m somewhat hoping the left keeps it up so that the public tires of their ‘the Boy who cried racist’ act by November.

Creepin’ me out

Volkswagon has a new radio ad campaign that you may or may not have heard. It focuses on buyers of used (or in dealerspeak “Certified Pre-Owned”) VWs calling the previous owners on the phone to rave about the car.

I don’t know what the internal name is for this campaign, but one of the pitch lines is: “Come see some very pre-loved cars at your local Volkswagon dealer.”

The creepiest part though, is the line that is always the closer: “Visit your local Volkswagon dealer to feel the Pre-Love.”

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to feel any kind of love at a car dealership unless it is from the pretty girl working at the cashier desk. Perhaps it comes from having worked at more than a couple of them. Maybe it is just me, but this ad campaign just oozes “paedophile in an ice cream truck”.

Nevermind their pushing of the “Certified Pre-Owned” scam, this campaign means I won’t be checking out the new Rabbits until it’s over for a while.

Btw, I’m looking really hard at the Yaris 3-Door. Not picking one up anytime soon, but that doesn’t stop me from taking a courtesy drive shortly after they come off the truck (thankee Dean).

Oh the humanity!

Or would that be ‘The Raccoonity’?

A fierce group of raccoons has killed 10 cats, attacked a small dog and bitten at least one pet owner who had to get rabies shots, residents of Olympia say.

Some have taken to carrying pepper spray to ward off the masked marauders and the woman who was bitten now carries an iron pipe when she goes outside at night.

“It’s a new breed,” said Tamara Keeton, who with Kari Hall started a raccoon watch after an emotional neighborhood meeting drew 40 people. “They’re urban raccoons, and they’re not afraid.”

Of course they’re not afraid. It is pretty much illegal to kill the bastards within any moderately sized townsip in this state unless they’re attacking you directly. They can be tearing your family pet a new asshole and you still can’t do anything except call animal control (who go off-duty at 5pm, thank you very much).

Your only legal option is to pay a professional trapper (approximate cost $500 each animal) to live-trap and “relocate” them. This solution, if there isn’t a family of them to replace the “relocated” member, only lasts about two weeks before the thing finds its way back to your locale, smarter than before and pissed off about not being given bus fare for the ride home.

I’ve got two solutions

1: Paintball gun – Even if you don’t freeze the paintballs to increase the sting factor, you can paint the little bastards from head to toe before they get out of your yard.

Initial investment $50-75. Little to no training necessary. Pretty effective, but not 100%

2: Crossbow pistol – its your property and what the man with the badge don’t know, won’t hurt him.

initial investment $50-75. You’ll want to practice in your basement or garage over a weekend or two. It is as effective as you are accurate. Don’t go chasing after your bolts. A wounded/dying raccoon will still mess you up enough so that you’ll have to go to the ER. Buy extra bolts at initial purchase.

If you have another solution (remember, city limits rules frown on the discharging of firearms), please feel free to leave it in the comments section.

After all, RNS is all about solutions.

Technically, not illegal

But that never stopped the left from thrashing to and fro when committed by someone they don’t like.

From the Gateway Pundit

Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption and judicial abuse, announced today that Judge Anna Diggs Taylor, who last week ruled the government’s warrantless wiretapping program unconstitutional, serves as a Secretary and Trustee for a foundation that donated funds to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Michigan, a plaintiff in the case ACLU et al. v. National Security Agency. Judicial Watch discovered the potential conflict of interest after reviewing Judge Diggs Taylor’s financial disclosure statements, available on Judicial Watch’s Internet Site, http://www.judicialwatch.org/.

According to her 2003 and 2004 financial disclosure statements, Judge Diggs Taylor served as Secretary and Trustee for the Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan (the foundation made a “recent grant” of $45,000 over two years to the ACLU of Michigan). She was reelected to this position in June 2005. The official CFSEM website states that the foundation made a “recent grant” of $45,000 over two years to the ACLU of Michigan, a plaintiff in the wiretapping case. Judge Diggs Taylor sided with the ACLU of Michigan in her recent decision.

This should be interesting to watch.

Of course, the leftists will say that this has nothing to do with the merits of the ruling, and that her recusing herself wouldn’t have mattered (I know this because while not explicitly including info about her affiliations, sock-puppeteer extraordinaire, Greenwald, is already talking about how they don’t matter).

I’m waiting to hear the screaming

From the media, calling the Alabama Democratic Party homophobic.

Joe Reed, chairman of the Alabama Democratic Conference and vice chairman of the Democratic Party, not only tried to influence the voting in a Birmingham legislative race, but also he is making sure that a challenge to the voters’ choice stays alive.

Patricia Todd defeated Gaynell Hendricks in the July 18 primary runoff election by 59 votes. The people have spoken. There is no reason to believe the outcome is anything but an honest expression of the preference of voters who went to the polls. It is time to move on.

However, Hendricks and her supporters are contesting the election, trying to find some technical loophole that might allow them to win before a party committee the victory they were unable to win in the field.

Hendricks says she is paying for the contest. However, Reed did deliver a check to the Democratic Party to pay for the contest if Hendricks’ check did not arrive on time, Jerome Gray, field director for the ADC, told a News reporter. The hearing on Hendricks’ challenge was delayed when members of the panel failed to show up.

If an openly gay Republican candidate had won say, a Washington State Primary, and the state party were trying to oust him or her from the ballot, you know and I know that it would be national news and a subject on the Sunday talkshow circuit.

Nothing. Zero. Zip. Nada-fooking-word is what I’m hearing currently.

What a surprise.

Its Funny Because Its True

Ted @ Rocket Jones

You know that 1982 Ford Econoline van with the twelve ladders strapped to the top? Yeah, with seven guys riding inside. Doing the speed limit, while everyone else on the road passes them left and right. Yeah, that one!

Deport them.

Emphasis mine.

The Mob Rules

By now I’m sure you’ve heard about the passengers on a flight from Spain to the UK who refused to let the plane take off until a pair of Muslim males were given the boot.

This is Bush and Blair’s fault. At least if you spend a bit of time reading the leftist blogs.

Hate-monger, Dave Neiwert, is on vacation, but he has found an equally hyperbolic and hypocritical replacement in Mrs. Sara Robinson. In her words, this would have never happened if Bush and Blair would quit spreading fear of terrorist attacks by muslim men on aircraft.

There’s only one word for this. It’s vigilantism, pure and simple. It’s no different than any other kind of lynch mob. And it is beneath the dignity of a civilized society.

While I wouldn’t call the group of passengers a ‘lynch mob’, I would say that the mob mentality took over. These people are, by their own testimony, afraid for their lives, and because humans are animals, their survival reflexes kick in. A single person, on the average, is smart enough to calm themselves down in this scenario, but groups, by and large, are ignorant, raving and insane.

She then goes on to tell us what this kind of mentality will positively lead to if not checked at the political correctness door

But there’s far more at stake here than meets the eye. If these vigilante mobs are allowed to get their way on airplanes, what’s to stop them from taking their show on the road? Are we going to see subway mobs assaulting brown people on train platforms to “prevent” subway bombings? Are restarauters going to find themselves under pressure from upset diners not to hire — or seat — certain “frightening” classes of people? Will neighborhood groups press realtors to stop selling local homes to specific ethnic groups, for fear property values will drop? Or will they, perhaps, subject “undesirable” neighbors to harassment campaigns until they’re forced to move on?

Mrs. Robinson’s solution for this isn’t education or stronger security measures, she wants the airlines to lie to us.

Greater sanity is called for. The airlines need to start by stating, unequivocally, that they trust the decisions of their security staff on the ground. And even if they can’t make that statement with a clear conscience, allowing vigilante mobs to intimidate their passengers and crews isn’t the way to solve it.

We hear everyday about how the left dislikes being lied to; By right-wing politicians, by left wing politicians, by the people in the media, etc. But in a situation where their physical safety might be in question, they want to be lied to.

Reality based, they are not. They would rather be herded sheep made to feel safe by happy lies.

This much I know: There are some principles worth more than any plane ticket.

I have principles too, but they generally involve me being alive to act on them and they never involve me asking to be lied to.

Sock-puppeteer extraordinaire, Glenn Greenwald plays the same violin

All of the fear-mongering and political exploitation of terrorism from the Bush administration and its loyal supporters (including the British Prime Minister) is starting to produce predictable results.

(snip)

What is certain is that as government officials like Tony Blair and those in the Bush administration come to rely more and more on fear-mongering, there is a lot more incidents like this in our future, and many of them will be worse.

He then goes on to link to a comparison of this incident versus the shooting of Brazilian Jean Charles de Menezes by police in the London subway. Though Greenwald forgets to mention that de Menezes ran from police, and towards a crowded subway car, after repeated warnings to stop (he most likely ran because his visa was expired and he was in the country illegally).

Captain Ed, backhandedly linked to by Greenwald, has it just about right

Is that fair? Hardly. However, the unwillingness of the governments in both the UK and the US to provide systems of screening that instill confidence in the flying public has led to these incidents. They will continue and increase while screening systems insist on playing political correctness games instead of focusing on real threats as the Israelis have done for decades.

Greenwald blatantly lies and implies that the Israelis racially profile, a fact that anyone who has ever taken even the slightest look into the El Al screening program would tell you is a gross mislabelling.

But hey, if the leftists are willing to let the airlines lie to them, then surely they’re willing to be lied to by their favorite bloggers too.
