Not Thinking Things Through To Their Conclusion

Over at the TPM Cafe, Greg Anrig Jr. posts the runner up for today’s “The Dumbest Thing I’ve Read All Day” post.

He argues that the best thing to help the “genuine economic problems confronting average American families” is to legislate in nationwide Universal Healthcare Coverage.

To back up his argument, he points to a survey (pdf file) by the Commonweath Fund presented last month that asked some very poorly phrased questions about healthcare of 1023 people from across the country. The survey oversamples Democrats and found some of the lowest money earning college grads I’ve ever seen.

The survey comes to the conclusion that 76% of people want drastic changes in the healthcare system in the US.

So, to Anrig, this means that the time is ripe to start pushing Socialized Medicine.

The survey, of course, mentions nothing about the costs to the average citizen for this type of coverage, and surprise, surprise, neither does Anrig in his post.

I have a strong suspicion that if the survey were to ask people if they would be willing to drop another 12% to 17% of their raw income on health insurance whether they will be using it or not, their opinions might be more than just a little different.

Especially when you remind them that 55%, if not more, of their income is already going to cover local, state and federal taxes.

But telling someone that paying 70% of their income to some type of government bureaucracy run like the DMV will help their economic plight is kind of a hard sell, so people like Anrig and folks like the Commonwealth Fund miraculously neglect to mention it.

I guess they are thinking at least part of this out. But only so they can deceive.

The Dumbest Thing I’ve Read All Day: 09/06

Was found at leftist blog Crooks&Liars, where Nicole Belle links to a NYT Magazine article by Michael R. Gordon titled “An Army of Some”. The article focuses on the work our men and women in uniform are doing to get the Iraqi Army trained to handle their business.

After writing a sub-headline of “Winning Hearts and Minds” she posts the first paragraph of Gordon’s article:

The rules posted on the wall of the Marine base in Barwana concisely summed up the American predicament in Iraq: Be polite, be professional, have a plan to kill everyone you meet.

According to the list of USMC Rules for Gunfighting that I printed out and have posted on my corkboard above my desk, that is Rule #21.

I’m taking it that Ms. Belle didn’t read the article because, all things being taken into account, it isn’t that bad a report. Yes, it is taking longer than planned to get the new Iraqi Army trained up, but it is happening. And while Michael R. Gordon would like it done faster, and I think most everyone else would as well, the gist I got from the story was that it WILL happen because we’re committed to it happening.

But apparently, Ms. Belle finds the opening line objectionable and wants everyone who stops by C&L to know who the US in employing to establish an army in Iraq. To them, it sounds like we’re using cold blooded killers.

To me, it sounds like we’re using Marines.

Btw, I have posted a complete list of USMC Rules for Gunfighting below the fold for those who don’t have their own.

Just like Mr. Bill

I’m saying “Oh No!”

I was re-reading about Miller Brewing Company’s sponsorship of illegal alien protest marches and as I was getting caught up on all the happenings, including their lame excuses for doing it in the first place, I hit Malkin’s place to see the list of adult beverages Miller brews up.

I’d see it in other places but washed over it, something I’ll not do again after I saw the horror that awaited me on the list:

Henry Weinhard’s Classic Dark

When I cannot find a decent Porter (which unfortunately in not uncommon in this land of Ale and Herf drinkers) this is my favorite standby. It is a seasonal brew, only available between October and March. I buy it, I mean, I USED to buy it by the case, in moderate quantities near the end of March and store it in a cool, dark place for consumption during the off-season.

With it being September, I have only one case left left in the second fridge in the garage. I will drink it even more slowly than before and begin anew my quest for a Porter subsitute.

I’m coming out the closet, y’all!

Hi, my name is Phil, the blogger formerly known as The Analog Kid.

Some of you may have noticed that since this last Saturday, my name has appeared at the top of posts instead of my previous pen name. There are a couple of reasons for this which I would like to lay out here, if’n you don’t mind.

First of all, I’ve been blogging here for three and a half years now and not only has this place been excellent and cheap therapy, it has also helped me define my personal and political beliefs.

Having to write everything you want to say out on a daily basis gives you time to think analytically about those things. While some folks choose not to use the time for such purposes (ie: the majority of the leftist blogs I read), I have taken full adavatage of it. My beliefs haven’t really changed since I started on this e-adventure, but they have become rock solid. Sadly though, even to this day, I still cannot define them in a word without it containing more letters than the word “antidisestablishmentarianism”.

It is partially because of this reason that I have decided to knock it off, at least a little bit, with the greasy kid stuff (no pun intended). I feel I’ve outgrown it and, have therefore dumped it.

Another reason is because I have discovered some other folks have taken to using this knickname (both here and here). It is a very minor reason and I could truly care less, as I have been pondering this change for a while now. Although I would really like to get some of the exposure the guy with the Townhall blog has been getting over at the AoSHQ.

It appears that we’re all Rush fans and have somewhat close to the same political beliefs, and that the name will continue with folks like that is good enough for me. If those two want to fight it out, that is between them. I personally suggest a legwrestling contest, because that looks as silly as arguing over a name is.

I’ll still be the same old me, doing the same old “me” stuff here at the same old blog. If you want to still call me by the name or initials, I won’t mind in the least bit either as it will always be part of my history in the blogosphere.

There will still be a ban on my full name, address and place of employ being published on the site. This is only because of the sheer amount of trollitude I’ve gotten while posting here, with a couple of them becoming stalkers who stop just short of physical threats. If that ever comes to an end, y’all will be invited over to my place for a party. I figure that me telling them when I’m going to places like Gun Shows and the range is enough of a chance for them to voice their complaints, I don’t need it done on my lawn or in my office.

The “Analog Wife” and the “Analog Mom” will generally be referred to as “The Wife” and “The Mom”, although I think “The Mom” has taken a liking to the moniker and you may still see her in the comments section as such.

The post is also notice to any left-wing bloggers when I post comments at their sites that I am not pulling a Glenn Greenwald and getting into ‘sockpuppetry’.

——————–

Another change I’d like to initiate is that whenever I write about buying something, I will be using the phrase “After Tax Dollars”.

The reason for this is simple: The local Air America affiliate uses the phrase in their commercials telling the listeners that they should patronize the station’s advertisers so that the advertisers will keep buying ad time.

I’ve heard somewhat similar ads on local right-leaning stations as well, but they’ve never explained it in such detail.

Leave it to socialists to have to be told how capitalism works.

And I’ll be mocking them for just that reason with my use of the phrase.

That is all. Have a good day.

The Soundboard: The Return

Ha Ha! They Can’t Stop The Rock.

Or, in today’s edition, “The Country” either.

Using some of his holiday weekend to make sure that I can spread the joy of tunage, Craig from MTPolitics has again earned my thanks for helping me bring back The Soundboard.

As partial repayment for the helping hands, I asked him what he might like to hear. I’m not sure if’n he was trying to stump me, but he asked for “Okie From Muskogee”.

I leaned on over to the CD rack next to RNS Blogstation Tacoma and reached in between Vince Guaraldi and Herbie Hancock and grabbed the Merle Haggard CD’s, knowing it was in there somewhere.

Lo and behold, here it is

Okie from Muskogee – Merle Haggard

Many Thanks, Craig.

I’ve decided that I’ll be posting a different tune every day this week, with each song available for 24 hours. Each one will be a portion of stuff I listened to while The Soundboard was out of commission.

Next week we will be going back to the Thursday format and I’m planning on it being the beginning of a run from one band, whose disk I used my “after tax dollars” to order a very long time ago. It was damaged in shipping with me getting a refund but never receiving it. During the downtime in July due to the scriptkiddies hacking the place (Craig helped with getting RNS back up then as well) I was cleaning out my Amazon wish list, saw it there and reordered.

Wow, I never knew what I was missing. This album rocks way too hard for it to be legal, in this fellow’s opinion.

But more next week. In the meantime, enjoy this week’s tunage.

Something to Ponder

Captain Ed brought up a very good point on Saturday.

Actually, it was brought up for him by Shinzo Abe, a member of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party and who is thought to be in the running to be Japan’s future Prime Minister.

I pose this question to you:

Should Japan be released from a portion of the treaty signed on the deck of the Mighty Mo and allowed to form a true, functioning military?

I’m voting “Yes”.

With the Norks banging the war drum, a fully armed, manned, prepared and pissed off Japan might just be the water that will cool their fire.

America is not, and should not be “The World’s Policeman”. If we are going to call for a wholly self-sufficient Iraq, can we be non-hypocritical while denying Japan the right to Self Defense?

I know the UN would be against it, and that singular point is almost enough to nail it for me.

Please ponder and reply in the comments.

The Dumbest Thing I’ve Read All Day: 09/05

Because I took yesterday off to let things settle down, I’ve got a twofer and I haven’t even had time to go through the dKos or the HuffPo.

First, SadlyGavin from the SadlyNoblog does a classic leftist interpretation of Bill Kristol from his appearance on Fox News Sunday:

What was actually said

Elisabeth Bumiller: How do you define winning the war? What does that mean?

Bill Kristol: A democratic government in Iraq. The country remaining united (with some federation), with the insurgency under control in the sense of not being able to destroy the country or launch a large sectarian civil war. No weapons of mass destruction. No aggression against neighbors. And that’s quite possible, incidentally. I think it was very possible three years ago, and I think it remains possible.

SadlyGavin’s interpretation:

Elizabeth Bumiller: So basically, you mean pretty much how it was before the war.

Bill Kristol: Except without Saddam Hussein in power, yeah, more or less.

Umm, wasn’t Saddam being in charge, funnelling hundreds of thousands of dollars to terrorists, leaving the al Qiada members in his own dictatorship alone to fester and train, committing countless numbers of actual human rights abuses (not the kind that the left likes to point out), using gying children in fake hospitals as PR tools and breaking the 1991 ceasefire agreement the entire problem?

I remember Saddam turning away the option of stepping down from power and taking sanctuary in a country of his choosing before the invasion.

Maybe SadlyGavin forgot?

Next up, we have this video of a campaign commercial from candidate Vernon Robinson (R) from North Carolina’s 13th CD, which John Amato at the CrooksandLiarsblog calls “Sleazy”, “Sick” and “Vile”.

Methinks it is because it has some truth in it.

“You needed that job,” an announcer says. “And you were the best qualified. But they gave it to an illegal alien — so they could pay him under the table. … These illegals pay no taxes, but take our jobs and our government handouts. Then spit in our face. And burn our flag. Well, Vernon Robinson has had enough!”

That is text from the voiceover in the ad, but only the parts that Amato finds objectionable. Do you see anything sleazy, sick or vile in there? Anything not truthful?

I have seen $15+ an hour roofing jobs go from working families to illegal aliens who are happy to be getting less than $10. Almost universally, you have to speak at least some spanish to be able to get a foreman’s job in the homebuilding industry here in Washington State.

You’d figure the Dems would be all for getting those jobs back into the hands of working families, what with how they bitch about “Living Wages” and frightmonger about “The Shrinking Middle Class” all day and night.

But no, because they can root for the illegal immigrant as an underdog, they’re all for the stripping of jobs from actual citizens.

In the comments at C&L, someone sensibly brings up needing to speak spanish when just trying to order fast food in LA. He, of course, gets hammered on, but the one thing I saw in there was some idiot compare the pay received by the non-english speaking customer service representatives, working in America, I might add, to “Slave Wages”.

What the hell do these people smoke? There is no such thing as a “Slave Wage”.

A slave earns nothing in return for their labor, that is why they are called “Slaves”. What is the “Slave” supposed to spend his “slave wages” on, anyway? They’re owned property, they can’t buy anything.

Hyperbole, Invective, Empty Gestures and Moral Sactimony.

This is all the American left has to offer this country.

They’re confusing me again!

The blogging left is in a full-on tantrum that would put Veruca Salt to shame over a two-part movie/series thingamabob that purportedly drops a lot of blame for September 11th in Clinton’s lap (although they all admit that they haven’t seen it yet and are relying on “Reports”).

The BBC is airing it, and we all know how they love ol Billy, so I’m more than a bit suspect already.

But back to the left’s reaction; Their best defense of Clinton is that in 1996, the Congess blocked Clinton’s attempts to expand wiretapping by the government, to supposedly listen in on terrorists, and it is therefore the GOP who is to blame for the lack of attention paid to al Qiada during the Clinton Administration.

Which confuses me, mostly because they are bitching about Bush and his listening in on calls originating from outside the country and from numbers known to be used by terrorists.

So, are they saying they’re OK with that now? That because Clinton wanted it, expanding the reaches of FISA makes them happy-happy?

Is there something he isn’t telling us?

Goldy, blogger at the Seattle based RonSimsAss.Org blog is looking for more information on the Democrat’s attempt to make an insurance company’s policy on whether you are risk or an asset (you know, a business decision) a campaign issue and in his post, he says something rather intriguing:

Sources have confirmed to HA that Safeco Insurance is indeed the unnamed “Firm 1″ in a Washington Insurance Commissioner’s Office study of the abusive use of credit scoring to cancel auto-insurance policies. As first reported in the Seattle Times, Safeco has asked the Thurston County Superior Court to block release of the information.

According to sources familiar with the investigation, the controversial practice was initially pioneered in WA state by Progressive Insurance. Sources say that Safeco was actually late to embrace the practice, but did so aggressively under former CEO Mike!™ McGavick’s leadership, far and quickly exceeding the scope and impact of its competition.

When the story first broke Monday I thought it would be easy to find a cooperative source inside an office Democrats have held for years, but extracting relevant information turned out to be harder than squeezing blood from a stone.

While I was first inclined to wonder why the local Dems weren’t complaining about Progressive Insuance Company using the tactic, what with the company’s uber-left chairman, Peter B. Lewis, and his hard-left political donations, the highlighted part is what grabbed my attention the most.

Why does Goldy think that just because an office is held by Democrats, that they would leak information to him to help him put down a Republican candidate?

Is this a learned behavior of his?

Misredirection: Bumped and Updated Yet Again

I see by the lack of folks stopping by yesterday that we experienced a malfunction of our redirect HTTP.

Tsk, tsk. I did ask everyone to adjust their permalinks properly when we switched over to WordPress last January.

Oh well. If you see someone wondering where we went, please do inform them that they need to switch the end of the web addy from “/mt/blog/” to “/wp/”.

In the mean time, the work behind the scenes to trim down the RNS server goes on. We should hopefully have the redirect up for those folks with the MT addy.

If you are stopping by today and couldn’t yesterday, please adjust your permalinks appropriately. Thankee very kindly.

This place doesn’t work well without youse guyz.

UPDATE: Things are going on behind the scenes to get RNS so that everyone can find us.

With that in mind, I’m going to hold off posting a whole bunch of stuff until we’re back to normal so that folks don’t have to scroll back for pages and pages in order to get caught up with the rest of us.

So, if you’re here and using the /mt/blog/ URL, that means our good man Craig has fixed my overzealousness and things are all hunky-dory again. Tomorrow will hopefully be per-usual and I’ll have the announcement I spoke about last week posted, among other things.

In the mean time, I’ve got some weekend stuff up and Professor Booty has questions for you all, if you would be so kind.

Have a good day.

UPDATE 2: Looks like we’re back in business, y’all. There’ll be a special addition of The Soundboard on Thursday as well to celebrate.

Have a good day.
