The Smartest Thing I’ve Read All Day

John at Just Some Poor Schmuck, an Emergency Services Coordinator (aka: 911 Dispatcher) hits the nail on the head.

“Panic Attacks” are something that seems to have developed since I was a kid. When I was growing up no one had “panic attacks”. They somehow had ‘nervous breakdowns” but never “panic attacks”. Even then they were few and far. I never knew anyone who had one, or even anyone that knew someone that had one. They were things of fable and myth that usually affected people in a far higher income bracket that ours.

But that’s all changed. Having a “panic attack” or a “nervous breakdown” is not seen as a problem. It’s an “illness” and no cause for concern. It’s not your fault, nothing is today. You can pick up the phone and call 911 and someone will rush to your side to take your BP, slow your respirations and calm you.

It’s the last paragraph that really swings the hammer. Go read.

The Dumbest Thing I Have Read All Day: 09/26

In a strange twist of truth and hyperbole at the HuffPo, US Representative Major R. Owens (NY-11) steps over the “Sanity Line” with a little piece titled “Ethnic Cleansing in the Shadow of the Superdome”  .

If you skiped the post title and went right into the body, you wouldn’t realize that the guy is whacked out of his skull until around the fifth paragraph.

Like Rep. Owens, I believe that spending my federal tax dollars, via FEMA, to repair a stadium is an insult.

But unlike Rep. Owens, I don’t think it is the fed’s duty or their job to build low-cost high density housing projects for anyone. If folks weren’t so used to being dependant upon government dollars, the forces of the market would take over and investors would build housing.

But ask anyone you know who has had any success in investing in real estate and they will tell you the one thing that is holding back a big boom in building of apartments in NOLA: Because gov’t is a follower and not a leader, as soon as the fed sees someone dumping loads of private money into the construction of high density housing, they will then do the same. This would sink just about any possibility of profit that an investor or a group of investors could hope to gather.

Why would someone sink $10 Million into a housing project when there is a high probability that the fed will come in and build a half-dozen projects shortly thereafter, for little to no cost to the new tenants? To someone who wants a return on their investment, that sounds like a good way to fail.

The wasting of our tax dollars on rebuilding the Superdome is one of the most ignorant things I’ve seen the fed do in recent years, but it is not an attempt to wipe out the black population in New Orleans.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is nuttier than squirrel turds.

They took a survey

And came away with the wrong answer.

A federal advisory panel said Monday that Congress should take immediate steps to guarantee that all Americans have access to affordable health care by 2012.

As a first step, the 14-member panel, appointed by the comptroller general of the United States, said, “A national public or private program must be established to ensure protection against very high out-of-pocket medical costs for everyone.”

The panel, the Citizens’ Health Care Working Group, said Congress should create an independent “public-private entity” to define a basic set of health care benefits and services for all Americans.

We have a program for this, it is called “Legal Citizenship and Gainful Employment”. You work for your own benefit. One of those benefits is called “Health Insurance”. I’ve worked some crappy, low-paying jobs before I got what could marginally be called a “Career”, and even sweeping the floors in a book warehouse for minimum wage an hour got me heath insurance.

We also have companies who will sell private coverage to folks who can’t get insurance through their work.

While leaving many details to be worked out, the panel declared, “It should be public policy, written in law, that all Americans have affordable access to health care.”

The panel did not say how much its proposals would cost or how to pay for them. But, it reported, many consumers said they were “willing to pay more to ensure that all Americans are covered.”

Ain’t that just like an “Advisory Panel”: We have an idea, we don’t know how much it is going to cost, or how we’re gouing to pay for it, or even how or if it will work, but we think you should do it!

Of course, when you ask a group of citizens about medical issues they’re going to say that everyone should have the same access to treatment. Especially when you don’t bother telling them how much it is going to cost them.

And if I’m not mistaken, I am already paying more ensure that everyone has medical treatment available.

Lovely — I guess Tamiflu doesn’t work very well sometimes….

Hugh Hewitt linked to this story at Northshorejournal about a Thai man who died from avian flu.

Key points:

1) they didn’t know he had H5N1 until the postmortem. Test samples taken while he was hospitalized and dying were negative. That’ll make it tough to determine the extent of an outbreak.

2) They suspected he had avian flu, so he was treated with oseltamivir (Tamiflu). Not stated how long or what dose. But he only lasted about 20 days in the hospital (hospitalized July 21; died August 10.)

Quote of the Day: 09/27/06

Women and cats will do as they please, men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

Robert a. Heinlein

I had thought of it the other way around, seeing how we generally are the relaxed ones. But I’ll take the man’s word for it.

A Severe Lack of Speculation

I have not yet received any guesses of a serious nature as to the identity of the mystery band in yesterday’s Soundboard post.

Since tomorrow is Thursday, the usual day for the Soundboard posts, I’ll wait until start of business tomorrow before divulging the answer. I think a goodly number of folks will be very surprised.

But let us see if there are any who won’t be surprised.

Hit the Road

Once again, the leftists let their love of Mother Earth overwhelm their common sense.

You may recall some years back that the Clinton administration instituted the Roadless Area Conservation Rule that protected some 58 million acres of unspoiled forest land from development. That rule, to no-one’s great surprise, was rolled back this past May by the Bush administration.

That action spurred Washington’s very own Jay Inslee and a group of House members to put forth the Roadless Area Conservation Act, which would codify into law the Clinton-era rule. The action also spurred a coalition of four State Attorneys General and 20 environmental groups to file suit, seeking to uphold the rule.

Today, all these supporters of the environment scored a victory when federal Judge Elizabeth Laporte upheld the Roadless Rule, throwing out the Bush administration’s plan to re-allow development in those areas.

To the eco-socialist left, the wilderness is a museum for which looking is good, touching is bad.

Their lines of “We need to save these areas in pristine condition for future generations” leads me to believe that they won’t let them utilize them either.

I seem to remember seeing news reports this week on wildfires in California, where these “Roadless Area Conservation” ideas first began. One item mentioned too infrequently is that the inaccessibility of the areas under the flame is making stopping the fires a problem.

Hmm, maybe if there were roads into and out of these areas, fighting the fires wouldn’t be so difficult and fewer trees, wildlife and land would be burned.

But thinking like that apparently isn’t “Eco-Friendly”, or so I’m told. Mostly because it folds their logic into origami.

The Dumbest Thing I’ve Read All Day: 09/26

I didn’t want to, but I did it anyway.

I went into the dKos Animal Farm and Petting Zoo.

There, I found an item that not only fits this post category to a tee, but shows us the twisted priorities of the left and how they can downplay the threat of terrorism.

Over at the dKos, they have a system called “Diary Rescue”. If a certain “diary” post gets enough recommends or if whomever is tasked with “rescuing diaries” likes the post well enough, the “diary” gets bumped up to the front page so as to give it more exposure.

And that is where I found today’s example of “The Dumbest Thing I’ve Read All Day”.

In the center ring of the three ring circus that is leftist blogs we have a comparison between:

International Fundamentalist Islamic Terrorists armed with Nuclear Weapons

and (a drumroll begins and the spotlight swings over to….)

Global Warming!

The consequences of global warming are terrifying. Much more terrifying than any nuclear bomb in the hands of a terrorist.  Millions of people, including most Americans, displaced by rising waters, starved to death, diseases gone wild, all within 50 years.

Even if you think that this scenario has only a 1% chance of happening, does it not make sense to try to do your utmost to stop it?

If Cheney’s 1% doctrine applies to terrorism, does it not apply also to global warming?

If so, why isn’t anyone asking Cheney this question?  Of course one would have to have balls and an opportunity to do so.  I am just floating this meme here hoping that it flies. Because I am really worried that there is more than a 1% chance that I may live to see global warming kill us all.

(emphasis NOT mine)

I just have no words that can describe exactly how idiotic those words are. If the “diary’s author, Shockwave, is more worried about the possibility of rising sea levels, and an extra degree of fahrenheit and whatever else AlGore can dream up to scare people than the actual threat of an Islamic Totalitarian state giving nuclear weapons to terrorists, then there is really nothing I can do to help him.

Another item of interest that was bumped to the front page of the dKos:

Bush Family History 1900 to 1920: The Rise of American Fascism

Yes, that is yet another diatribe on the topic of GWB’s grandfather and great-grandfather with the same info that was being circulated before the 2000 election. For some reason, not only do the dKos inmates find this information exciting and new, they exuberantly thank the “diary’s” author, London Yank.

Col. Jeff Cooper, R.I.P. : Bumped

Via this morning’s Survivalblog, Jeff Cooper passed away yesterday.

I’ll just reiterate the quote from this post last week, upon learning of his heart attack:

No matter who you are or what you’ve done with a big bore handgun, you do it better because that man lived.–B.C. Walsh USMC-22nd MEU (SOC), HPD SWAT, Lafayette Gun Club Combat Pistol Team

–B.C. Walsh USMC-22nd MEU (SOC), HPD SWAT, Lafayette Gun Club Combat Pistol Team

I’m sure there will be many eulogies posted around the blogosphere over the next few days. As you see them, we’d appreciate it if you’d stop by and post them in the comments to this post for others to share.

The Soundboard: Would You Like To Play A Game?

Take a listen to this cover of The Beatle’s “I want to hold your hand” and tell me who you think the covering band is.

I will reveal the answer tomorrow, along with another one of the songs off their album.

There are really no prizes other than being declared a top notch rock trivia freak.

Hint: If you listen to the outro guitar solo, you should at least be able to make out the axman.
