Oh, That Liberal Media

Reuters tries to throw a fast one. Too bad the right-wing blogosphere was there to knock it out of the park.

The case of a New York attorney convicted of aiding terrorism has prompted debate among U.S. lawyers about whether the Bush administration wants to scare them away from representing terrorist defendants.

Lynne Stewart was convicted in February 2005 of helping a client smuggle messages to militant followers and is to be sentenced on Monday. She faces more than 15 years in prison.

“Her case is an example of the way in which the government is equating individuals who represent terrorists with terrorists themselves — that language of ‘if you’re not with us you’re against us’,” said Rachel Meeropol of the Center for Constitutional Rights.

“It’s a scare tactic,” she said. “It is worrisome that attorneys might become less able to represent out of fear of being prosecuted.”

But blogger Steve Gilbert over at Sweetness and Light has what Reuters (and the carrier, Yahoo) forgot to mention.

How fitting that the proud granddaughter of the executed traitors Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, Rachel Meeropol of the Communist front Center for Constitutional Rights, should take up Stewart’s cause.

And how typical that the Reuters report fails to note her noble ancestry or the equally noble work of the CCR, which is representing the terrorists being held in Guantanamo.

Now why would they have done that?

Oh, THAT liberal media!

Now that he mentions it

Our good man RD has a post up that may have an effect on your Christmas shopping.

Here is a snippet

It may be time to consider speeding up the completion of your SHTF weapons kit.

With most polls showing a large, and growing, lead for (D)onk candidates in the house races, and the election being only a month off, we have to face the distinct possibility that Nancy Pelosi will be running the House next year.

Being a Kalifornicateress from San Fran, she will probably immediately sponsor new gun control legislation, and it is my guess that under her leadership, a slew of proposals will get through the House. The Senate, even if the GOP retains control, will go along with most or all of them (RINO factor). That means that the POTUS will have some of these on his desk starting as early as next spring, but definitely by the summer recess.

My only addition to this would be that one is never really “done” completing a SHTF weapons kit. The wife is of the opinion that I could equip an army, while I think that my supplies would be only good enough for a 5-7 man squad.

However, I decided that the majority of my monetary supply will not be going to additions to a weapons kit, and will instead be going towards getting the SHTF vehicle/vehicles ready to roll.

But, if you are not yet happy with your weapons kits, sooner is always better than later to “git er done”, as they say.

RNS Quote of the Day: 10/13/06

To take from one, because it is thought his own industry and that of his fathers has aquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers, have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association; the guarantee to everyone the free exercise of his industry and the fruits aquired by it.

Thomas Jefferson

I’ve found that once this quote comes into a discussion, the leftists stop referring to TJ on economic and taxation issues.

I can see the future

And it looks like this

A teenage schoolgirl was arrested by police for racism after refusing to sit with a group of Asian students because some of them did not speak English.

Codie Stott’s family claim she was forced to spend three-and-a-half hours in a police cell after she was reported by her teachers.

The 14-year-old – who was released without charge – said it had been a simple matter of commonsense and accused the school and police of an over-the-top reaction.

The incident happened in the same local education authority where a ten-year-old boy was prosecuted earlier this year for calling a schoolfriend racist names in the playground, a move branded by a judge “political correctness gone mad.”

I am always reminding folks I work with that the Brits don’t have any actual “Freedom of Speech” rights.

I guess I’m going to have to update that little factoid to include no “Freedom of Association” rights either.

Tom Knapp is Awesome

…and I don’t mean his record-setting exhibition shooting abilities. No, the man’s a true gentleman. I know because I just spent a very pleasant 20 minutes on the phone with him this morning.

I’ve been wanting to update our Benelli Nova 12-gauge and 20-gauge pump shotguns. Bearing in mind Phil’s black-and-blue souvenirs from the tactical shotgun match last year, I figured it would be a good idea to take advantage of Benelli’s mercury recoil reducer kits for the 12-gauge guns.

So after a bit of web searching I found Mr. Knapp’s website (which he says is getting a much-needed facelift in about a month or so). His seems to be one of the few outfits that have the recoil reducers in stock, so I placed an online order yesterday just before I went home from the office.

I’d printed a confirmation, but it sat on my printer until I walked in this morning. Whoops! I’d accidentally purchased two of the 12-gauge Nova magazine extensions as well. That’s what I get for ordering fast without paying attention. Well, I already have a pair of the factory 12-gauge extensions, so I called up the number on the confirmation printout to straighten things out.

Tom Knapp answered the phone. At first I thought he’d sprung for one of those “intelligent” voice-recognition software packages for his store and recorded his voice for the prompts. Nope, it was the man himself. With his exhibition and TV show schedule, I think he’s crazy to do this, but he’s still running the store on the one day a week he’s home and not traveling.

Anyway, he was happy to refund my money for the extensions until I mentioned that what I really wanted was the extensions for the 20-gauge Nova. Benelli stopped importing extensions for the Novas a year or so ago, and they’re hard to find even in 12-gauge. In 20-gauge, it’s impossible. Nope, Tom has ’em. They’re not factory, but a reasonable facsimile approved by Tom himself. I’m getting the two that are sitting in his garage, and he said he’d tried one of ’em out on his Nova to be sure they worked. I pointed out that his website shows the 20-gauge extensions to be out of stock, and he thanked me — he’s going to update the website to fix that.

We got into a discussion of web design and updates, and he’s got some exciting ideas for making things better for his customers and fans. They should be reflected on the overhauled website in about a month or so.

That mellifluous rolling bass of his is not something he “turns on” for the cameras — that’s really the way he sounds. But even more enjoyable was his personality — he’s genuinely friendly and quite the conversationalist. It’s rare that a phone call makes my day, but this one did. Thanks, Tom!

RNS Quote of the Day: 10/12/06

Personally, I’m interested in keeping other people from building Utopia, because the more you believe you can create heavan on earth the more likely you are to set up guillotines in the public square to hasten the process.

Propaganda 101

This is how you handle the scandal, cruise the news, and make the story boring.

At least if you’re a leftist and want to keep the focus on a non-event like “Holey Foley!”

Take yesterday’s crash of a private plane into an NYC apartment building:

You can cover it like Karol at Alarming News, update extensively and even crack a joke at Alec Baldwin’s expense once it is found that it wasn’t terrorism.

Or you can be like John Avarosis at Americablog and John Amato at CrooksandLiars, “Oh yeah, and a plane crashed in New York.” No mention of a building being involved and focusing on who was involved.

How about the story of Connecticut Representative, Chris Shays, taking advantage of Teddy “Bubbles” Kennedy being in his state to stump for Shays opponent and reminding everyone that a Republican never left someone to drown under a bridge while they went to get sober and a lawyer.

You can cover it like the AoSHQ, quote well and take a swipe at Kennedy because he deserves it.

Or you can cover it like Avarosis and Amato did: Equate sending dirty IM’s to Vehicular and/or Negligent Homicide and remind their readers about Laura Bush’s accident from high school.

Or maybe you’re trying to put water on the fire that is the fact that your party’s Senate Leader is has been making crafty land deals for a decade or so.

You could link to El Capitan and let your readers know that Harry Reid isn’t all he’s cracked up to be and has been bending legislation to improve the price of his land parcels.

Or you could use your power as three of the top five leftist blogs in the liberal-blogosphere (Markos Zuniga, Avarosis and Amato) and write about how you’ve read the entire AP story and just can’t figure out what the big fuss is, even though the story was quite clear what Reid did wrong.

On this last one, make sure to try and use the words “Hit Piece” and link to each other. That way, your readers can tell their friends they have “multiple sources” that confirm it to be no big deal.

Whatever you do, do not stop blaming Bush for everything from North Korea to the weather. Your leftist credentials can be called into question at any time.

If you fail at this, you could be called a “Rethuglican”.

Just how many of them

Expect to still be alive to carry out the trials?

Rodger Schlong pointed out this story yesterday

Nuremberg-style trials proposed for global warming skeptics

A U.S. based environmental magazine that both former Vice President Al Gore and PBS newsman Bill Moyers have deemed respectable enough to grant one-on-one interviews to promote their projects, is now advocating Nuremberg-style war crimes trials for skeptics of human caused catastrophic global warming. Grist Magazine’s staff writer David Roberts called for the Nuremberg-style trials for the “bastards” who were members of what he termed the global warming “denial industry.”

Roberts wrote in the online publication on September 19, 2006, “When we’ve finally gotten serious about global warming, when the impacts are really hitting us and we’re in a full worldwide scramble to minimize the damage, we should have war crimes trials for these bastards — some sort of climate Nuremberg.”

I think a title such as “The Climate Inquisition” would be a much better name for the eco-socialist’s plans.

The effects aren’t supposed to “hitting us” for another 100 years or more, so I’m not too worried. Maybe they should be though, because if any of us are all still alive then, it’ll just mean we’ve had that much more time to buy ammo and go to the range for when they come to our front doors with their pitchforks and torches to take us to court for driving our “Earth Murdering Trucks”.

Soros pairing with dovish Jews to consider an alternative to AIPAC

A top staffer for billionaire philanthropist George Soros met recently with senior representatives of the dovish pro-Israel community to discuss setting up an alternative to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, JTA has learned.

Morton Halperin, a director of Soros’ Open Society Institute and a veteran of senior positions in the Clinton, Nixon and Johnson administrations, confirmed to JTA that the meeting took place late last month. He would not add details.

“It was a private meeting, it was an effort to get this off the ground,” said Halperin, who directs the institute’s U.S. advocacy.

The meeting focused on how best to press Congress and the Bush administration to back greater U.S. engagement toward resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and how to better represent American Jews who don’t buy into AIPAC’s often hawkish policies.

Scary shit. Because to be less-than AIPAC-hawkish, you need only want to see Israel turned over to the Islamo-supremacists.
