I don’t like the sound of this

But it happened and hopefully, Rumsfeld can give the Administration some inside info.

Rumsfeld Sat On Board Of Company That Sold Nuclear Reactors To North Korea

Rumsfeld was the only American to sit on the board of a company which six years ago sold two light water reactors to North Korea.

Rumsfeld has since refused media requests to talk about his role in the light water reactor deal and has instead criticized it.

Think Progress thinks this is “Big News”. Personally, I think it is “Little News” and the only actual newsworthy part of the story is what info can Rumsfeld give to the WH team whose job it is to monitor the Nork reactors.

But this jackass at the Northwest Progressive Institute thinks the people “blaming” the Clinton team for arranging the delivery of these reactors should also/instead blame Rumsfeld directly.

Yeah, beacuse the Norks would have gotten the reactors without the Clinton team’s recommend and Rummy could have stopped the transaction because he was a mid-level director with no veto priviledges.

Good lord, some people’s children.

The Dumbest Thing I’ve Read All Day: 10/12

Did I miss something or is this guy lying?

The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Healths survey stating that over 600,000 Iraqis had been killed during our invasion/occupation of the country isn’t even being believed by some of the more intelligent folks on the left and is being flatly turned down as delusional by right thinking folks across the sphere.

But Will Bunch at Attytoodblog has swallowed it hook, line, sinker, bobber and if I’m not mistaken, even has the fisherman’s hand in his mouth. Not only that, he dilluting the numbers of Iraqis killed by Saddam Hussein in this post, titled

601,027: Study suggests twice as many deaths in Iraq since 2003 as killed by 23 years of Saddam

Saddam lost at least a half million military aged males during his war with Iran, do those not count here?

Bunch tries to claim that Hussein only killed around 300,000 of his own people in 23 years, cites his sources as “Most experts looking at the Saddam years”, but provides no link. I know that I remember that number being over a million and something in the back of my head says over 2 million.

But with this horrifically methodized survey, Bunch gets his “Bush is twice as bad as Saddam” figure. Which is all he could have ever asked for.

Update to the Dead Criminal Post

On Monday I wrote this post about a citizen who most certainly saved his own life and probably the lives of others by shooting a man who was attacking him.

Yesterday’s Seattle Times give us an update to the story with the extensive criminal past of the attacker:

A 25-year-old man who was fatally shot while attacking a stranger Saturday at Westlake Plaza had previously served time in prison for setting fire to a day-care center his mother operated out of her Phinney Ridge home.

Daniel Culotti was shot shortly after 11 a.m. by a 52-year-old man he was assaulting in an unprovoked attack, according to Seattle police. The victim of the assault was carrying a handgun and had a concealed-weapons permit, police said.

In July 2001, Culotti had attacked his mother, Melinda Culotti, inside the family’s former residence on Palatine Avenue North near Woodland Park Zoo. He later returned and doused the floors inside the house with gasoline, setting the house on fire.

Culotti’s mother, several child-care providers and seven children escaped unharmed.

Culotti later pleaded guilty to first-degree arson and was sentenced to just under two years in prison.

According to the state Department of Corrections, Culotti served approximately nine months in prison before he was released in Oct. 2002 with time off for good behavior. But jail records show that he was arrested three times this year for violating the conditions of his release into the community.

Nine months prison time for first degree arson of an occupied business.

Washington State Justice. Sound Politics asks what this guy was doing on the street, and I second the question.

While this article gives us the name of the dead criminal, the police are thankfully still not giving out the name of the, most likely, still disarmed citizen who defended himself. They do, however, give some new info.

According to Seattle police, a woman called 911 at 11:08 a.m. Saturday to report that a man was acting erratically, yelling at passers-by and randomly assaulting strangers near Boren Avenue and Pine Street. Officers sent to the scene couldn’t find the caller, the man or any victims, police spokeswoman Debra Brown said.

Twenty-three minutes later, police dispatchers radioed that shots had been fired at Fifth Avenue and Pine Street, she said. Moments earlier, witnesses told police, a man in his 20s apparently attacked the 52-year-old man, punching and kicking him until he fell to the sidewalk. The older man pulled out a .357-caliber Ruger revolver and fired one round, striking the man in the abdomen.

The older man “was not winning the fight” – the other man “just starts attacking him, he’s on the ground and a shot is fired,” Brown said, describing witnesses’ accounts.

“It happened pretty fast. Probably by the time anybody thought to intervene, it was already over.”

The 52-year-old had a concealed-weapons license and was in legal possession of the handgun, Brown said. Police have not released the man’s name because he was not booked into jail.

“He was very cooperative,” she said, noting the man waited for officers to arrive and turned over his weapon; he was interviewed by police and later released.

According to a police report on the incident, officers took into evidence the handgun, one spent shell casing and five live rounds of ammunition.

The names of the 52-year-old man and three witnesses were redacted from the report.

So far, it sounds like this case will be one that is chalked up as a win for the good guys. But we still have to Prosecutor’s Office to deal with.

His death has been ruled a homicide, according to James Apa, a spokesman for Public Health – Seattle & King County.

The Times, in a move wholly unlike them, actually interviewed someone who knows about these things.

Though it will be up to King County prosecutors to decide, one local author who has written about Washington state’s gun laws said the shooting appears to be a “textbook case of self-defense.”

“This 52-year-old fellow was minding his own business, going through Westlake [Plaza] and this other guy jumps him, whacks him pretty good, gets him down on the ground and starts kicking him,” said Dave Workman, author and senior editor for Gun Week, a national publication that reports on gun laws, regulatory changes and news from the firearms industry.

“Under those circumstances, the man on the ground was in fear of being severely beaten or beaten to death and so was justified in defending himself, including using lethal force.”

According to state law, anyone who can legally possess a firearm also can apply for a concealed-weapons license. The law, however, typically restricts citizens from carrying guns onto school property and into jails and courthouses, bars or other places where alcohol is served, restricted areas in airports, and mental-health facilities.

State law not only allows people to defend themselves and their property from intruders in their homes but also from anyone who poses a threat of imminent bodily harm to themselves or others in any place they’re legally allowed to be – whether it is a shopping mall, a grocery store or a city street.

Workman said that in determining whether a case fits the legal definition of self-defense, one must consider “the reasonable man doctrine” – that is, what any reasonable person would do under similar circumstances with the same amount of information.

In the past year or so, King County prosecutors have declined to file homicide charges in three cases in which self-defense was claimed, spokesman Dan Donohoe said.

He explained that from a legal standpoint, prosecutors must disprove a claim of self-defense beyond a reasonable doubt for a jury to convict someone in such a case.

We at RNS are crossing our fingers for the as yet unnamed citizen.

The Next Outrage

As the flailing dies down over how Foley tried to fold a page, expect this story to pop up in leftist circles

A Seattle man who traveled to Iraq nine times to deliver medicines during the 1990-2003 international embargo was properly fined more then $13,000, a U.S. appeals court ruled on Tuesday.

Bertram Sacks visited Iraq and broke the embargo nine times to deliver humanitarian aid between 1996 and the start of the U.S.-led war there. He sued in federal court after he was assessed a $10,000 fine, a sum that later rose to $13,767.08 with interest and late fees.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals backed the travel ban regulations and the fine.

Law say you no go there, you no go.

“Humanitarian Aid” or not. Even the 9th Circus can see it plain as day.

But then again, most leftists think it is hunky-dory to go to Cuba.

They were for the distinction

Before they were against it.

The eco-socialists long ago met with the EPA and the National Marine Fisheries Service. In the end, the EPA and the NMFS capitulated to the eco-socialists that hatchery salmon and wild salmon were “different” from one another.

And so went the EPA and the NMFS, making rules governing fishing, trying to keep commercial fishermen, sport fishers and the tribes happy. OK, maybe not happy, but at least away from the courts.

And all was well enough left alone.

Then a new ruling came down over the Killer Whales in Washington State waters. The line was “Each pod is its own particular species. The pods are small and they need protection. The whales need the salmon. The salmon need protection.”

And that is where this story begins.

Do not be fooled by the names of the plaintiffs in the case. They do not wish to scale down anything. They want hatchery salmon treated as wild salmon, and that is their bottom line. Once they do that, you lovers of the sal-mon will think you’re buying caviar, and forget about catching your own.

Stupid Asks as Stupid Is

From the “You did, dummy!” file

ABC’s Sawyer: Does U.S. Have Right to Stop a Nuclear North Korea?

First, Katie Couric wondered who made America the “boss” of the world, now ABC’s Diane Sawyer wants to know if “the U.S. can tell other countries whether they can have nuclear weapons or not?” Sawyer asked the question on Monday’s Good Morning America during an interview with Donald Gregg, former ambassador to South Korea under the first President Bush, about North Korea’s apparent test of a nuclear weapon. Sawyer queried Gregg about whether America has the right to criticize such testing: “I want to ask you a question I’ve heard being asked this morning, which is, really, how can the U.S. tell other countries whether they can have nuclear weapons or not, when the U.S. has them and seven other countries as well? Does this mean that the genie is officially out of the bottle and that the U.S. is no longer in a position to dictate who gets nuclear weapons?”

Cold War ends. Saddam Invades Kuwait. World screams “Do something, America”. America does something.

It has been the same since then.

Now, because they feel comfortable enough to in this supposedly fascist and authoritarian politcal climate, the media asks really stupid questions.

Basically: Clinton as World Policeman = Good. Bush as World Policeman = Bad.

Nevermind that it was Clinton the World Policeman who was only giving the bad guys verbal warnings that led to our current state of affairs.

The Dumbest Thing I’ve Read All Day: 10/11

Yet another left wing blogger playing stupid?

Or does it just come naturally?

John Amato at CrooksandLiarsblog again, taking Condoleza Rice out of context and then putting words in her mouth

Condi Backs Clinton Over North Korea

RICE: We have been through bilateral talks with the North Koreans in the
1994 Agreed Framework, it didn’t hold.  They…

BLITZER:  That was a mistake the Clinton administration…

RICE:  No.  I will not blame anyone for trying.  I just know that the 1994 agreement, of course, didn’t hold.  The North Koreans cheated.

BLITZER:  Is there any evidence that what the Clinton administration did helped North Korea build these bombs?

RICE:  Oh, I think North Korea has been persistent and has been consistent in pursuing this nuclear weapons program for decades.  Now, it is going to have to be fought.  And the international community is speaking with one voice very loudly, because the North Koreans crossed an important line when they proclaimed that they had conducted a nuclear test.

Help me out here, I heard Condi being civil and not wanting to point fingers, but I didn’t read anything about her saying that Clinton’s idea of bilateral talks which ended up awarding the Norks nuclear reactors at Jimmy Carter’s recommendation being a “good thing”.

Did I miss something, or is Amato just looking for a propagandist post title?

RNS Quote of the Day 10/11/06

The worst lesson that can be taught a man is to rely upon others and to whine over his sufferings.

If an American is to amount to anything he must rely upon himself, and not upon the State; he must take pride in his own work, instead of sitting idle to envy the luck of others; he must face life with resolute courage, win victory if he can and accept defeat if he must, without seeking to place on his fellow-men a responsibility which is not theirs.

–Theodore Roosevelt, “How Not to Help Our Poorer Brother,” Review of Reviews, January 1897; later collected in Roosevelt’s American Ideals. [Emphasis mine.]

Everybody’s Back from the Gunblogger Rendezvous

…the one that neither I nor Phil could attend. But Joe Huffman did, and he gave what must have been a rip-roarer of a speech.

We seldom win. We seldom make real progress. We occasionally defeat an anti-gun politician at the polls but his replacement isn’t able or willing to undo the damage done by his or her predecessor. We only slow the cancer some. We aren’t defeating it.

There’s more, a lot more, here, including some very apropos comparisons of gun-owners to others famously deprived of their civil rights. Credit Joe with the entirely appropriate coining of the epithet “gun niggers.” Yes, you read that right. Go read the whole thing.

Joe also posted links to various gunblogger recaps of the Rendezvous. Boy, I’m sorry the wife and I had to miss this one. Next year!
