RNS Quote of the Day: 10/18/06

Much of the growth in law, however, was due not to government’s expanded role but to it’s techniques. We changed our attitude toward legal detail: The words of law expanded far faster than the new areas of law. The Federal Register, a daily report of new and proposed regulations, increased from 15000 pages in the final year of John F. Kennedy’s Presidency to over 70000 pages in the final year of George H.W. Bush’s. The Interstate Highway System, still the country’s largest postwar public works program, was authorized by a 1956 statute that ran 28 pages. A transportation act passed by Congress in 1991, which almost none of you probably noticed, was ten times longer.

Speaking Ill of the Dead

The 5th Circuit Court has vacated the conviction on the charges of fraud and conspiracy to defraud against the the dead Ken Lay.

As I mentioned back in July, this has sent the left atitter as can be shown with this post from Chris at the ineptly named AmericaBlog.

But what is truly precious are the conspiracy theories about how Bush helped Ken Lay fake his death in the comments section, a tact that was also taken by the guy I spoke about in the July post. The reasons for the vacating of the convictions are stated back in that post, as are my thoughs on the deceased.

Like I said yesterday: If they don’t feel they’re being conspired against, life just ain’t worth living for the leftists.

If at first you don’t succeed

Swindle, defraud and take inappropriate funding from orphaned children again.

Air America’s downfall has caused a vaccum in the world of commercial left-wing talk radio (not to be confused with the publically funded left-wing talk radio network, NPR).

But have no fear, the original co-founders, Anita and Sheldon Drobny are starting a new, soon to fail, leftist radio network, Nova M.

It is with great excitement and optimism that I announce today the formation of a new progressive talk radio network. Myself along with my partners, Anita and Sheldon Drobny; the original cofounders of the Air America Radio Network, want to be the first to tell all you “truth seekers” that the original truth seeker himself Mike Malloy will be born again live on the public airwaves. The planned second coming (barring any apocalypse) is scheduled for October 30, 2006.

Make sure to scroll down to the bottom of the page to see if your city is one of their two stations!

When will they remember that radio is not a charity? If no one listens to your crap, you will not sell commercial airtime.

Oh well, at least this is a few more dollars they won’t be spending legislatively.

Proud Papas and Mamas

In the race between Lieberman and Lamont, the Lamont supporters decided that it was high art to build a paper-mache “float” that rides in the back of a pickup truck depicting Lieberman and Bush in a lip lock.

float.jpg

They were quite proud of said item and showed it off whenever and wherever Lamont campaigned during the primary. Then it went away for a while when this guy got an idea.

A rather funny one, if you ask me. But the Lamonteers weren’t amused, calling it a “truly despicable joke!”

Now that the pro-Lamont jihadis have faded away, the Lamonteers have decided it is time for “The Kiss” float to ride again!

In fact, Jane “People Just Don’t Get My Racist Jokes” Hamsher has video of it for all to see.

Sounds to me like the pro-Lamont jihadis need to hop on their motorized camels once again.

In a rather unsurprising bit of related news, Matt Stoller of MyDD somehow finds anti-Lamont “slander” in these two “attack” flyers from the Republican Jewish Coalition.

Oddly enough, and you can supersize/download these for yourself, neither of them even so much as mentions Lamont.

Cindy Sheehan, Howard Dean, MoveOn.Org, Jimmy Carter and Al Sharpton, yes. But nothing about Lamont.

I think maybe they hit a nerve Stoller doesn’t like touched?

the Dumbest Thing I’ve Read All Day: 10/17

This issue if flying all over leftosphere, but I chose this one because she is as serious as a heart attack.

It surrounds the upcoming verdict in the trial of Saddam Hussein. The leftosphere “Questions the Timing”.

From the AP

A verdict against Saddam Hussein and seven co-defendants charged with crimes against humanity in connection with an anti-Shite crackdown in the 1980’s will be announced Nov. 5, chief investigating judge Raid Juhl said Monday.

And the retort from Magpie at Pacific Views

November 5th? Isn’t that just two days before the congressional elections that the GOP is increasingly afraid it’s going to lose?

I wonder which strings in the ‘independent’ Iraqi government had to be pulled to get that date? The Saddam verdict won’t be as good as yanking Osama bin Laden out of his cave, but it’ll certainly get the attention of the GOP’s right-wing base.

If they don’t feel they’re being conspired against, it just ain’t worth living for leftists.

End of an Era

We can no longer boast of The World’s Longest Undefended Border.

We just can’t get people to stay away.

U.S. begins air patrols on Montana-Alberta border

U.S. Department of Homeland Security opened its third air surveillance base near Canada on Monday, furthering eroding claims the shared border is the longest undefended one in the world.

The Great Falls Air Branch in Montana will patrol the shared border with Alberta. When fully staffed, the operation run by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol is expected to consist of 52 federal law enforcement officers, pilots, aircrew and support personnel.

Dennis Lindsay, the director of air operations at the branch, said it will conduct regular patrols and be able to respond quickly to any incidents.

“We’re here because we see a vulnerability along the northern border,” said Lindsay. “We want to make sure we’re doing everything within our power to counter that vulnerability and close it up.”

The branch’s fleet includes two Blackhawk helicopters and three additional aircraft equipped with highly sensitive radar and infrared cameras. Plans call for unmanned drones in the future.

It was easy enough to get this set up along the CanAm border. What has been proving so difficult with getting this going on the AmMex line?

Oh right, Liberals.

I just got off the phone with Satan

He says it’s snowing where he’s at and he wants me to find him some skis that fit on his hooves.

Seattle PI columnist, Robert Jameson and I agree about something!

I’m so astounded that I don’t know what else to say, so here’s the column

‘Illegals’ term isn’t divisive, it’s the truth

A hijacking of the English language just took place.

It happened earlier this month when Seattle activists accused Senate candidate Mike McGavick of using “divisive” language by invoking the word “illegals” in an ad.

In the TV spot, McGavick’s camp says Sen. Maria Cantwell “voted to allow Social Security benefits to illegals.”

Liberal activists, led by Hate Free Zone Washington, a social-justice group, blasted such language, calling it “dehumanizing.”

“This kind of anti-immigrant rhetoric is inflammatory,” the activists claimed, “and does nothing to solve the real problems to our broken immigration system.”

Immigration policy in America is broken.

The system doesn’t reflect the millions of people who sneak in and help our economy by cooking in restaurants, working as nannies, picking fruit or building homes.

But to suggest people who come from Latin America or Canada or wherever without valid paperwork are somehow here legally is ridiculous.

As David Ray of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, put it: “Referring to an illegal alien as an ‘undocumented immigrant’ is like calling a bank robbery an ‘unauthorized withdrawal.’ ”

“Undocumented workers” or “unauthorized migrants” are euphemisms used for a reason — to sugarcoat uncomfortable truths.

You see this verbal jibber-jabber all over the place.

Actually Robert, you only see this in liberal circles. Everyone I know and speak to talks very plainly, not because they are stupid, but because they mean what they say and are not ashamed that they say it.

Robert may be a few years behind the curve on this one, but to see a guy who has come out and blasted Microsoft for not attempting to influence public policy on the topic of same-sex marriage, and wrote an entire column claiming that having sex with animals did not constitute animal cruelty.

Not that I actaully want his agreement on this issue, but he does expose the pussy-footing around with the language of immigration to a rather bright light.

What makes the linguistic spin surrounding illegals brain-numbing is that using polite words or phrases doesn’t magically give people legal status. It does wipe out accurate language in the name of protecting the feelings of people who are in this country without permission.

I’m usually on the same page as Pramila Jayapal of Hate Free Zone, but not this time.

“Factually, no human being is ‘illegal,’ ” says Jayapal, director of the social-justice group. “People commit acts that are illegal. Many of our august Congress people have committed illegal acts — but we do not call them ‘illegal.’ ”

Jayapal points out that being in America without valid immigration papers isn’t a criminal offense. The immigration system was set up as a civil system, not a criminal one. Immigration violations, she says, are typically considered civil violations.

That said, people without papers aren’t following the rules. That makes them illegal immigrants or illegal aliens or illegals for short.

Have you ever noticed that when deranged activists like Jayapal point out items such as criminal acts by members of government, they 1. Never specify which acts they consider illegal, and 2. Forget that despite these acts, millions of people still want to cross the border by any means possible?

RNS Quote of the Day: 10/17/06

Shamelessly nicked from Samizdata.Net

If reality contradicts your thoughts, that’s delusion. If your thoughts contradict your actions, that’s madness. If reality contradicts your actions, that’s defeat, frustration, self-destruction. And no sane being wants delusion, madness and destruction.

The Golden Transcendence by John C. Wright

Eco-socialists think in delusion and speak madness to promote destruction.

They just have control of the language so that it sounds the opposite.

The Paris Intifada

It should trouble those on the Left (who tend to place the First Amendment above the Second) that a side effect of creeping dhimmitude in France appears to be self-censorship by Parisians so as not to offend the Muslim yutes.

Jewish columnist Nidra Poller, for example, notes that a friend of hers will “never forget hearing me tell an audience that I wouldn’t take the chance of saying shabat shalom when speaking to a friend on my cell phone in a Parisian bus on a Friday.”

During the course of commenting about the philosophy professor and his family forced to flee Paris and go into hiding after writing an opinion column in a French newspaper, she notes her shock at how casually New Yorkers speak in public about politics and religious matters. In France, they don’t anymore:

Riding uptown in a NY bus on the 1st of October (on my way back to JTS for the last part of Yom Kippur service) I catch bits of lively conversation. … The Haitian gives some details on the current kidnappings and crime situation, punctuated with flashbacks to the days of Papa Doc and Baby (still living on the Côte d’Azure if I am not mistaken) and the ups and downs of Aristide which, as far as I can gather, brings in the question of American involvement.

As the Haitian is about to get off, a woman across the aisle chimes in with a fervent defense of US governments past and present. I think she says she is from Latvia, and credits Americans with liberating her country, allowing her to come and live in this land of freedom. I am so astonished by the ease with which people express their opinions in public, that I miss parts of the conversation.

The talk is not fancy, but the participants are aware, informed, and free-thinking. … As we approach 122nd St. two men sitting behind me comment casually on the Jewish Theological Seminary training rabbis. I can’t remember what color they were, but they surely weren’t Jewish.

Charles Jacobs, founding director of the David Project, can never forget hearing me tell an audience that I wouldn’t take the chance of saying shabat shalom when speaking to a friend on my cell phone in a Parisian bus on a Friday.

Emphasis mine. Read the whole thing. Found via No Pasaran!

Yeah, yeah, I know, the First Amendment only protects against government infringement of free speech. But still, if you value free public discourse so highly, you’d think you’d be opposed to people imposing political correctness by force, wouldn’t you?

Oops, I forgot, that’s logic. Doesn’t apply where the Left’s concerned. In fact, they probably all would love to have the balls to do this to anyone whose pronunciamentos offend them:

Outraged Muslims with access to precise information on the professor’s whereabouts made convincing promises to submit him, his wife, and their children to the very bloodthirsty sharp-edged, head-splitting violence he had soberly described in a national newspaper. Result? The philosophy professor is now on the run. He cannot return to the Lycée Pierre Paul Riquet at Saint Orens de Garnieville on the outskirts of rose-tinted Toulouse.

A New View on Life

So my 17in CRT monitor has been acting a bit funny lately, getting darker and then lighter and then darker again. It was enough to give a guy a headache.

So yesterday, as the wife was looking through the ads in the Sunday paper for some items she’s needing, I would snatch up the ones she’d gone through and read through the dead tree media at the prices of replacement monitors.

While I’m sure they’re out there, no one was advertising a 19in CRT monitor and I’ve never been happy with my 17 incher once they gave me a 20in model at work. But I did find a replacement.

This one right here

Although, I must smirk as I admit that I didn’t pay nearly that price (try less than a third of it). Because I was up all night and able to get to the store in time, I snatched up one of three monitors they had in stock at that price. I would have gotten he widescreen version, but I’m still not quite sold on that.

And to think, we all used to be able to do just fine with a 14in green-screen.
