From the Reagan Diaries:

Thursday, March 19

The auto task force met with Cabinet — still some disagreement about any quotas on Japanese imports. …The V.P. summed it up nicely. He said we’re all for free enterprise but woudl any of us find fault if Japan announced without any request from us that they were going to reduce their export of autos to America?

There was no dissent. I told them I’d heard enough I would make a decision. Privately I told Al Haig to call Amb. Mike Mansfield and have Mike advise “Ito” before his visit that we were threatened by a bill in Cong. to set a quota. An announcement by Japan of a voluntary cutback could head that off. We’ll see what happens.

Al then told me he felt he was being undercut by other agencies etc. I worry that he has something of a complex about this. Anyway I’ve arranged that he & I meet privately 3x a week.

Less than 100 days in and Haig’s Nixonian palace-intrigue habits are already evident.

The Enemy of My Enemy is My Friend

Help from an unlikely place, or just their attempt to mark terrirtory?

China and Pakistan has signed a formal agreement covering security arrangements for the 4,000 Chinese citizens working in Pakistan. What this has done is make China a major player in the war against al Qaeda inside Pakistan.

China is a major supplier of military technology to Pakistan, but most of the Chinese in Pakistan are working on major industrial and infrastructure projects. Currently, 7,000 Pakistani military and police personnel protect Chinese working inside Pakistan. In addition, there are a small, but growing, number of Chinese security personnel.

The Chinese security detachment works with the Chinese community in Pakistan, to make sure there are no misunderstandings about the need for tight security. The Chinese security personnel also advise the Pakistanis on Chinese security needs, and help get needed technical equipment brought in from China. The major danger to Chinese in Pakistan is Islamic terrorists. Most of these are al Qaeda, and local Islamic radicals (mostly Taliban) who want Pakistan run by a religious dictatorship.

Since China has come down hard on real, or perceived, Islamic radicalism at home, China is seen by Pakistani Islamic radicals as “foreign devils” and “enemies of Islam.” The Islamic radicals recognize that China is crucial to maintaining Pakistani military and police power, and keeping the current government in power.  So there are more attacks on Chinese by Pakistani Islamic radicals.

I haven’t heard of any attacks on Chinese Nationals in Pak-Land. It may be China keeping things hush-hush, or it may be Musharef trying to keep a postive image of his country.

All this Chinese counter-terror work is done very quietly, and covertly. That may keep it out of the Western press, but the Chinese are increasingly tagged as major bad guys by the Islamic media, especially the outlets that are pro-radical.

You have to wonder what the dynamic here is, what with Obama, damn near literally, shooting his mouth off at Pakistan and the Chi-Coms getting a little practice in on the Islamofascists.

The Soundboard: Long Live The King, Baby

I actually went and repurchased a my favorite pair of Reverend Horton Heat dics to post some tunage today, but seeing as how this is August 16th, I think we’ll let that slide for royalty. Stop by tomorrow for the Rev.

On January 14th, 1973 Elvis went via satellite from Honolulu for charity and brought the roof down on the place. Today’s selections are from the album from that show.

First up on the plate, my favorite track of his

Suspicious Minds

And if you’ve never seen or heard Elvis live, this is one you need to hear.

An American Trilogy

The guy was an entertainer, no matter what anything anyone else has to say about him. When you showed up, you were the only thing that mattered to him and he made sure that not only he, but his entire band entertained. They were badder than Shaft, Superfly, James Bond and Kung Fu all put together.

And a round of grilled peanut butter and banana sandwiches for y’all. My treat.

I don’t know about you, but all those ecosocialist quotes of the day had me pretty bummed. Time for some more uplifting quotes for a while, says I!

Like this one. Remember the Atlanta Child Murders?

Friday, March 13 [1981]

Nancy off to N.Y. I’m to join her there. The Rev. Jesse Jackson announces he’s staging a march on Wash. Mon. demanding help for Atlanta in that 19 month tragedy of the murders of black children which has so far numbered 20 with 1 missing. Atlanta has a financial problem due to $100,000 a month overtime for police. What Jesse apparently doesn’t know is that we’ve already given Atlanta about $1 mil. and have roughly 40 F.B.I. agents in there on the case. Today I went to the press briefing room and read a statement detailing this & then announced we were giving another $1 1/2 million & that V.P. G. Bush was going personally to Atlanta.

Ronald Reagan, The Reagan Diaries

This is an absolutely excellent book. It’s loaded with so much quotable stuff that you’re going to be seeing a lot of it here. The editor, Douglas Brinkley, gives some background:

When I first saw the White House diaries at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, I was astounded. Lined up on a research table, all five volumes resemble a handsome half-set of an encyclopedia…. In physical appearance, the diaries were hardcover books, 8 1/2 by 11, bound in maroon and brown leather with the presidential seal embossed on the center of the front and the name RONALD WILSON REAGAN in gold lettering at the bottom right…. Within the pages themselves, you see immediately that Regan had neat, rounded handwriting, done in ink that is variously blue or black…. Cross-outs are rare. Economical to the core, Reagan filled every page to the very bottom. …Nancy Reagan explains that her husband kept the diaries in their second-floor White House study next to their bedroom. When traveling, he’d bring a volume with him, often writing while on Air Force One. “We just wanted a way to capture the moment and our feelings before we were whisked on to the next day,” Nancy explained, “so we could savor it a little more.” For several years after their return to California, the Reagans would often sit together in their den after dinner, reading aloud from their diaries and reminiscing about their White House years.

You’re in for a treat, folks. This is hands down the best book purchase I’ve made in the past decade.

That’s a pretty powerful ejector we’re using Over There in those M4s

…’cause this woman’s complaining that these cartridges put holes in her house. Oh wait, she calls them “bullets.”

Bullets -- Hah!.jpg

Ya don’t suppose there’s some confusion about fired vs. unfired bullets going on? And maybe a little deception?

Pacified Scots

There was a time when telling Scotsmen and women where they could enjoy a meal would have gotten you a swift kick in the balls.

Sadly, that time has long since passed.

Doctor and health workers have been banned from eating lunch at their desks – in case it offends their Muslim colleagues.

Health chiefs believe the sight of food will upset Muslim workers when they are celebrating the religious festival Ramadan.

The lunch trolley is also to be wheeled out of bounds as the 30-day fast begins next month.

But staff and politicians branded the move political correctness gone mad and warned that it was a step too far.

Bill Aitken, the Scottish Conservative justice spokesman, said: “This advice, well-meaning as it may be, is total nonsense.

“It is the sort of thing that can stir up resentment rather than result in good relations.”

The new guidance comes in the wake of the failed terror attacks on Glasgow and the death of suspect Kafeel Ahmed, 27.

Health chiefs in Lothian and Glasgow will give all employees time off to pray and to celebrate Eid, which marks the end of Ramadan.

But Greater Glasgow and Clyde as well as Lothian NHS boards also issued the advice, warning workers not to take working lunches, and said all vending machines should be removed from areas where Muslims work.

The very next line makes mention that none of these concessions are made for Catholics during Lent.

Of course, no one believes that a devotee to the Holy Trinity is going to blow up an office over a bag of Cheetos.

Membership (in the Muslim religion) has it’s privileges, I guess you could say.

Personally, I’m waiting for some jackass to suggest that Scotch not be consumed so as not to offend the Islamists.

There’ll be bloodshed, I promise you that.

RNS Quote of the Day: 08/15/07

I haven’t been keeping up with these lately, and to be perfectly honest, while I do have a few pages more of whacked-out eco-socialist quotes, I’m not sure that posting them would further the point I’ve attempted to make. Your opinions are, of course, welcome.

So whilst I ponder where I want this category to go, here is a random quote I found a while back, I believe, at Samizdata.

Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add ‘within the limits of the law’ because law is often but the tyrant’s will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

She likes her men submissive

And she wants them all to stay that way.

Dr. Helen posts about a “Fear of Manliness” in today’s American males and makes some suggestions as to how to, in my rather blunt phrasing, men can grab their balls out of the freezer, where the wife likes to keep them, and put them back on.

Jane Hamsher, on the other hand, thinks that there is entirely too much manliness already out and about and mocks the idea than men should be masculine at any time they want.

Start with the sensibility of the first link and then read the rage and frustration at the second.

Anyone

Who says that they will be voting for Hillary Clinton needs to have their head examined, in my opinion.

But anyone who says that they will vote for her and who doesn’t wonder why Clinton’s people won’t release the two million documents currently sitting in the Clinton Library needs to have their voting rights revoked.

As Cap’n Ed points out, Hillary is running on her “experience”. Wouldn’t it be wise for voters to find out what that experinence is, exactly?
