Schadenfreude an Gross

When you write about W falling off a Segway and call him an idiot for doing so, make sure you never fall off your Segway.

Especially if you break some ribs, like this jackass did.

Since its quasi-official now

That Fred Thompson has announced he’ll be announcing, I’ll be making a special apparel purchase to show my support for him.

From Those Shirts and IMAO

The three things most important to me (that can fit on a shirt that mentions punching hippies).

You can get one here.

I’ve been waiting for the announcement of the announcement for a long time. It’ll be nice to finally get this “my favorites” link used.

Something you may have missed

I know that I did until the wife recorded it on the DVR.

The show is called The Anti-Americans and it aired this last week on PBS.

Wow. Fascinating stuff. They go to France, the UK and Poland and talk to regular citizens there about their attitudes on America and Americans.

Eye-opening to say the least.

My impression, they love us. They’re always thinking of us and comparing themselves to us, and that is about the only impression I can glean from a person or persons who obsess upon you.

As one of the persons from Poland being interviewed stated, being anti-American is a safe attitude to have. America is not going to attack you because you say nasty things about them. He contrasts it to being in Poland in 1955 and speaking out with anti-Soviet rhetoric. That was not a safe attitude to have.

This same man, later in the show, states that while he does love America, he wishes that Poland weren’t treated like an abused wife by the US Government. This statement almost brought him to tears and it was at the end of a rant about how difficult it is to get a visa to come to the US.

I could go on and on relating the different people and their statements, from the French school children who were asked to draw the first things they thought of when they thought about America, and they drew Bush & Oil, McDonalds and guns (no, the French children didn’t get suspended from school for drawing a gun like American schoolchildren do), to the Polish Country Singer who looks more like a cowboy than half the C/W music superstars these days.

But I would much rather just send you to these links, where most of the segments of the show have been loaded into YouTube bits.

I’d start with this one, the Polish taxi drivers.

Then go watch this one, an upper-middle class British dinner party attended by intellectuals with an excellent rebuttal at the end by another Brit with the best analogy I’ve heard in a long time.

Then just hit this link and start watching the rest.

Someone in need of therapy

And I’m not talking about Aromatherapy, though if it’ll help him, I’m not against it.

Children as young as 12 are being targeted in a push by gun clubs to attract new members.

The Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (SSAA) will this month launch its “sign up a junior” campaign.

The association already promotes “come and try” days at rifle ranges to families with young children.

Members of the association, the largest of its kind in the country, have been urged to enrol their “son, daughter, grandchild, nephew or niece”.

The body has discounted its annual fees for children and will give away a $3,500 quad bike to one new junior member.

National president Bob Green last month wrote to his 104,000 members to say new members were needed to “save the sport you love and wipe the smile off the anti-gun lobby’s face”.

It was essential to introduce children “into the world of shooting at an early age”.

“(It) doesn’t really matter if they are five or 15,” he wrote.

Gun Control Australia said a surge in young shooters could lead to a rise in violent crime.

“Guns and puberty are a dangerous mix,” said president John Crook.

“Targeting juniors increases the likelihood of gun addiction.

“The trouble with kids is that they may think that violence is a way of solving problems.”

Mr. Crook (and what an apt name he has, what with the stream of lies he spews) has some deep seated issues, the least of which is his belief that show firearm safety to children will turn them into criminals or people who will use their newfound knowledge to “solve problems”. His biogotry knows no bounds, I’m quite sure.
His statement would have been more truthful if he’d have stated that a surge in young shooters could lead to a rise in lesbianism among teenage males. The mullets would be atrocious, this is true, but the teenage female population would probably be a lot calmer.

Just don’t go saying that you would use your firearm to shoot a crook within earshot of this guy. He’d probably take it as a threat.

I could almost agree with her

Except for the fact that it is open knowledge to every citizen that crimes are being committed using the information in the SSA database. That, and in my opinion, U.S. District Judge Maxine M. Chesney is a fucking idiot.

A federal judge yesterday barred the Bush administration from launching a crackdown Tuesday on U.S. employers who hire illegal immigrants while she considers a lawsuit by the AFL-CIO that charges that the plan will harm citizens and other legal workers.

The ruling, issued by U.S. District Judge Maxine M. Chesney in San Francisco, prohibits the Department of Homeland Security from starting to mail notices to 140,000 employers about suspect Social Security numbers. The “no- match” letters warn of penalties employers face by having discrepancies in their paperwork.

The order was a victory for the labor federation and the American Civil Liberties Union, which filed suit alleging that DHS is overstepping its authority to enforce immigration laws and is misusing a Social Security Administration database. They allege that the letters are an effort to pressure businesses to fire workers whose documents are flagged and could expose countless immigrant workers — including law-abiding citizens and legal residents — to job discrimination.

Chesney granted the request for a temporary restraining order against the government, saying the court needs “breathing room” before issuing a decision on the DHS plan. She set a hearing for Oct. 1.

How, exactly, someone actually checking your legally issued SS# when you start a job, the one use that the SS# is actually designed and legally designated for, will expose anyone who is in the country illegally to job discrimination is beyond me.

But then again, I’m white, so I must be a racist.

So here you go illegals-to-be: You have, as of today, 27 days to get a job before the fed starts telling employers how to check those fake SS#’s you bought. Get cracking.

As an aside on this matter, not too long ago, my employer discovered that one of our residential collection drivers was not who he said he was. The man, whose true identity is still unknown, had purchased the identity of a legal US Citizen of “hispanic decent” and was one of three people who were not the Citizen who were contributing to his account.

This is very odd, as my employer does full background checks on its prospctive employees that even the NICS people would be impressed with. That this guy made it through shows that he spent a very large amount of money on that identity.

And that SSA folks were sleeping at the computer screen. How one person could work four jobs in three states, all contributing to one account and the folks in DC not catch it is beyond me.

Wanted the ads

So I went and picked up the Sunday paper. I got more than I wanted

The Times is running a huge puff piece on He who likes to shout down his fellow servicemen when they express opinions differing from his, Jon Soltz.

Seriously, if the thing had been written by the guy’s girlfriend/wife, it couldn’t have been any more of a BJ on paper.

What an ass. Yes, it mentions how he mentored under, Kerry. No it doesn’t mention that Kerry was and is a lying sack of crap and most likely passed these ideas on down to Soltz.

I can barely believe it

Your kids is dumber than our kids

Washington’s graduating seniors may have done worse on the math and reading portions of the SAT than they have in years, but their average scores were still among the best in the country. The College Board, which owns the college-entrance exam, released scores from the class of 2007 yesterday. In Washington, the average critical reading score was 526 out of 800, the state’s worst score since 1994, while the average math score was 531, the lowest in six years.

I just have a hard time believing that Washington’s students, who apparently, aren’t smart enough to pass a standardized 10th grade math skills test which was crafted by people whose job it is to make Washington students look smart, actually got some of the best test scores in the nation.

What a sad, sad day.

In Memorium: The Booty Eulogies

There are no words I can think of to express the sorrow of my loss for John Thomas Booty.

My name is Cannelita Olivio. I live in Catanzaro, Italy. To the people who killed Jonathon, I dare you to try me.

Weekend Reading Material, New Gun Pics and Announcements

But not necessarily in that particular order.

The announcement is that tonight will be the “rearranging” of the RNS Blogstation Tacoma. Old desks go to the wood pile, even older desks get brought out for re-use and I have to figure out what exactly to do with an newly open section of wall.

Things should be back to normal before the AM on Sunday.

Also, the term “new’ in the New Gun Pics line of the title doesn’t really apply to an actual “new” gun. Just re-newed.

I bought a Rosewood Laminate Thumbhole Benchrest stock from Richard’s Microfit Gun Stocks a while back and finally got to where I thought I could do without the Ruger 77 MK I in .22-250 for long enough to get it fitted.

I’m loving it and I haven’t even remounted the scope yet. (please excuse the mess that is the back of my truck)

If you’re local to the area, I’ll hook you up with Mr. Palazzo, who does all my rifle work. He doesn’t have a website, and is busy enough to not really want one, so it is all appointments and introductions. He is also the guy who built Barak the Boomershoot Rifle back in 2004-05 from the receiver up.

This little as yet unnamed bad-boy is going to be just plain dangerous at Boomershoot 2008.

And now for some stuff I’ll be re-reading over the weekend:

Ilya Somin at The Volokh Conspiracy revisits The Lorax Revisited by Jonathan H. Adler of The Commons Blog. Eco-socialists like to read the classic Dr. Suess story to their spawn and present it as how evil corporations rape Mother Gaia. But under Mr. Adler’s more realistic examination, the tale actually looks to show more respect towards property rights than to their collectivist fantasies. Read Ms. Somin’s post first to get her intro to the subject.

Over at Protein Wisdom, Karl has a link-orgy showing “The Big Picture” of how the media is undermining support for the war and for the soldiers both there and at home. Seriously, wow. That one might take a couple hours or more, depending on how many of the dozens of links you click on.

With the upcoming 2nd Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina arriving upon us, Confederate Yankee’s post “Rebuilding New Orleans: A Continuing Mistake” is a must read. People will be talking about it all around you in the upcoming weeks. You can let them stay ignorant, or you can gently correct their misinformation. Personally, I’m going to use the 8lb sledge in the topmost picture above.

Lastly, but no less important, Brian Doherty at ReasonOnline has a discussion with Nathan Lewis about the bring back of The Gold Standard to the American monetary system. Very interesting and not as easy as it would seem. Btw, you should go here directly after you’re done reading.

RNS Quote of the Day, 09/07/07

From Marcus Luttrell’s Lone Survivor (review tomorrow):

…[U]ntil the United States decides to wield a very large stick up here in support of the elected government of the people, in Kabul, I’m not looking for any serious change real soon. The enemy is prepared to go to any lengths to achieve victory, terrorizing its own people, if necessary, and resorting to barbaric practices against its enemy, including decapitating people or butchering them.

We are not allowed ot fight them on those terms. And neither would we wish to. However, we could fight in a much more ruthless manner, stop worrying if everyone still loved us. If we did that, we’d probably win in both Afghanistan and Iraq in about a week.

This is an excellent book.
