Weekend Reading Material, New Gun Pics and Announcements

But not necessarily in that particular order.

The announcement is that tonight will be the “rearranging” of the RNS Blogstation Tacoma. Old desks go to the wood pile, even older desks get brought out for re-use and I have to figure out what exactly to do with an newly open section of wall.

Things should be back to normal before the AM on Sunday.

Also, the term “new’ in the New Gun Pics line of the title doesn’t really apply to an actual “new” gun. Just re-newed.

I bought a Rosewood Laminate Thumbhole Benchrest stock from Richard’s Microfit Gun Stocks a while back and finally got to where I thought I could do without the Ruger 77 MK I in .22-250 for long enough to get it fitted.

I’m loving it and I haven’t even remounted the scope yet. (please excuse the mess that is the back of my truck)

If you’re local to the area, I’ll hook you up with Mr. Palazzo, who does all my rifle work. He doesn’t have a website, and is busy enough to not really want one, so it is all appointments and introductions. He is also the guy who built Barak the Boomershoot Rifle back in 2004-05 from the receiver up.

This little as yet unnamed bad-boy is going to be just plain dangerous at Boomershoot 2008.

And now for some stuff I’ll be re-reading over the weekend:

Ilya Somin at The Volokh Conspiracy revisits The Lorax Revisited by Jonathan H. Adler of The Commons Blog. Eco-socialists like to read the classic Dr. Suess story to their spawn and present it as how evil corporations rape Mother Gaia. But under Mr. Adler’s more realistic examination, the tale actually looks to show more respect towards property rights than to their collectivist fantasies. Read Ms. Somin’s post first to get her intro to the subject.

Over at Protein Wisdom, Karl has a link-orgy showing “The Big Picture” of how the media is undermining support for the war and for the soldiers both there and at home. Seriously, wow. That one might take a couple hours or more, depending on how many of the dozens of links you click on.

With the upcoming 2nd Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina arriving upon us, Confederate Yankee’s post “Rebuilding New Orleans: A Continuing Mistake” is a must read. People will be talking about it all around you in the upcoming weeks. You can let them stay ignorant, or you can gently correct their misinformation. Personally, I’m going to use the 8lb sledge in the topmost picture above.

Lastly, but no less important, Brian Doherty at ReasonOnline has a discussion with Nathan Lewis about the bring back of The Gold Standard to the American monetary system. Very interesting and not as easy as it would seem. Btw, you should go here directly after you’re done reading.

I dunno, Phil. I was told that the lightest bullet that will reliably set off the boomers is 100-gr in a .243, and even at that, most Bommershooters consider the .243 undergunned there, especially for the long-range boomers at 700 yards. Isn’t the heaviest bullet available for .22 the 82-gr?

I’m going to outfit my M14 with a decent scope (with your help selecting one!), and it will be my main rifle. If the money is there, I have a Winchester M70 in .243 (also currently iron sighted), and might put some $$$ into it to get it ready also. Problem is, it’s the lightweight barrel, and I don’t know if I should expect the 1/2 to 3/4 minute accuracy required for hitting the little targets.

The M14 IS capable of hitting small targets, I’ve already done that with iron sights, so I know a good mount and scope will get me into booming. Also, might you want to part with the reloading data for your fave boomer load?

    Thanks in advance,

    Rivrdog

Damnit, not going to be able to make the Boomershoot… now *that* just annoys me.

    Phil,

Gorgeous work. I should have a “made-new” gun soon.

The .22-250 has always sounded like a kick ass round. I would think the sheer velocity would help out.

As to Rivrdog’s request, the Old Man used an M14 at Boomershoot and it was awesome. If he has questions about the performance, I’ll put him in touch with the Old Guy.

    Best regards,

    Benjamin
