The City of San Francisco is Denying People Their Fundamental Rights

And I’m not even talking about their gun-bigoted ways.

In October of 2005, Frisco Mayor, Chief City Philanderer and Runner-Up of that year’s Upper-Class twit of the Year contest, Gavin Newsom, declared free, city-wide Wi-Fi internet to be a Fundamental Right.

Well, nearly two years later, because government works at Glacial Speed, the deal has fallen through with the final proposed provider.

Mayor Gavin Newsom’s high-profile effort to blanket San Francisco with a free wireless Internet network died Wednesday when provider EarthLink backed out of a proposed contract with the city.

The contract, which was three years in the making, had run into snags with the Board of Supervisors, but ultimately it was undone when Atlanta-based EarthLink announced Tuesday that it no longer believed providing citywide Wi-Fi was economically viable for the company.

I’m sure, what with his politics, that if he couldmake heads literally roll, they would be.

RNS Quote of the Day 08/31/07

From the Reagan Diaries:

Tuesday, July 14 [1981]

We are still meeting & stewing about East-West trade and now we must take on the problem of what to do or if to do something to help the Polish people. Their economy is going bust. Here is the 1st major break in the Red dike — Poland’s disenchantment with Soviet Communism. Can we afford to let Poland collapse? But in the state of our present economy can we afford to help in a meaningful way? We can’t alone but if our NATO allies could really unite we could handle it.

Compare & Contrast: Open Carry

In California, open carry is allowed in unincorporated areas of many counties. So some intrepid souls are doing just that.

Now compare, via Kevin, a Connecticut fellow’s experience with open carry (full-auto, no less) in Israel. The reaction of the New York couple is priceless.

The Soundboard: Pound of Sound

Week 1: First a little intro…

For the next few weeks, or at least until I venture forth to visit the coastal regions of the Great White North in October, The Soundboard will be dedicated to The Pound of Sound.

Late summer always means Jazz for me. Here in the PacNW, the days are growing noticably cooler and noticably shorter, and Labor Day Weekend usually marks our “End of Summer”, Global Warming be dammed.

When I first started listening to this genre of music, I was in the last throes of my run with high strung import cars, and I had a transition model Toyota Supra that I had turned into a mobile experimental sound platform. Having friends in the car audio trade who trade decks, speakers and amps for engine and suspension work will do this to a guy. Varying between 2kW to just over 5kW, depending on what I had in the back that week, and in this fellow’s opinion, Jazz is the perfect test music when looking for distortion at all ranges.

Long late summer drives with the roof off the car were how I usually spent my weekends back then. No where to go and 12 discs to go through before I’d head home.

Yes, I credit all of my hearing loss to these years and not to my years firing pistols and rifles or to my years of exhaust tuning.

But enough blathering, lets get to some music shall we?

The phrase “Pound of Sound” was chosen because I’ll be trying to give you 16mb of music each week. My love of the jam has given me the availability to post some lengthy tracks, some studio, some live, that should, hopefully, blow you mind.

There are a couple rules to The Pound of Sound:

First, no linking. You can send your friends over for their Pound, but I doubt my bandwidth will last if we get multiple blogs sending folks this way.

Second, just download it. Don’t link in and decide you like it and then download it. If you don’t like it, just delete it.

Todays tunage is from one of the best guitarists you’v eprobably never hear of; Grant Green.

In 1972, Mr. Green played a live show at a club called The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, CA. If I haden’t only been a few months old at the time, I’m sure I’d have loved to have attended.

There are two tracks from the disc Live at the Lighthouse that I’ll beposting the day to get you your Pound:

The Introductions by Hank Stewart (2:30)

This is so 70’s it isn’t even funny. I can picture Stewart up there in his polyester earthtone butterfly collared shirt and bell-bottomed pants with rectangle tea-shades and a funky, single gold medallion warming up the audience.

Flood in Franklin Park (15:00)

The musicians for this jam include: Grant Green – Guitar, Claude Bartee – Saxophone, Gary Coleman – Vibraphone, Shelton Laster – Hammond B3 Organ, Wilton Felder – Bass, Greg Williams – Drums, Bobbie Porter Hall – Percussion.

Hit this link or the one above to buy this album. This track isn’t even the cookinest on the disc. I was listening to “Jan Jan” last night at work and had to aburptly jettison tunage to deal with a situation. I seriously thought I had had half of my brain sucked out after hitting the stop button.

Btw: this post was brought to you late by the Tacoma Power, who lately, cannot seem to keep the juice flowing into my neighborhood for two consecutive weeks. Next week’s post will be up and running earlier, Tacoma Power willing.

China slaps ban on reincarnation

China has rather brilliantly declared that, from next month, Tibetan Buddhist monks must have official permission to reincarnate, Newsweek reports.

The new legislation lays down strict guidelines for making a reappearance and is, according to a statement from the State Administration for Religious Affairs, “an important move to institutionalize management of reincarnation”.

The legislation is an administrative attempt to stop the Dalai Lama from coming back when his current Holiness passes on, but I can see the Chinese extending this writ to have an “Official” reason to kill any and all new Buddhists.

“Is that a Buddhist child? Well, he must then have illegally reincarnated and as punishment for breaking the law the government will have to kill him.”

They already do that under their ban on multiple procreation, this isn’t much of a stretch.

Cultural Factors in AIDS in Africa

Betcha didn’t know this one: “In the scholarly literature, the traditional [African] practice of the husband’s family inheriting all his property after he dies is called “property stripping.” Well, this causes problems:

In sub-Saharan Africa almost 60 percent of AIDS sufferers are women [and] in some settings … we are finding … that the number one risk factor for women in becoming infected with HIV is marriage.

[M]arried women have the highest rates of HIV infection. We have to take on some of the most fundamental and difficult cultural and social issues that are definitely affecting the way this epidemic is spreading. And … if we can take on things like for example, property rights [so] women can inherit the property of their husband if [he] dies, that really reduces the likelihood of them getting into sex work for example.

Typical scenario: Young African male plays around, gets infected with HIV from prostitutes. Western aid groups (among others) encourage marriage and monogamy to reduce the spread of AIDS. So the male gets married and infects his wife. If he gets AIDS first and dies, she gets nothing from his estate and is out on the street with little choice but to work as a prostitute. If she gets AIDS first, she’s thrown out of the monogamous relationship and has little choice but to work as a prostitute. See a pattern?

Read the whole thing. There’s lots of interesting stuff there.

RNS Quote of the Day, 08/30/07

From the Reagan Diaries:

Sunday, June 21 [1981]

Negotiations are still going on to try and head off tomorrow’s illegal strike by the air controllers. I told Drew L. to tell their Union Chief I was the best friend his people ever had in the W.H., but I would not countenance an illegal strike nor would I permit negotiations while such a strike was in progress.

–Ronald Reagan

I’ve been posting quotes from the Reagan Diaries in chronological order. We’re only on page 27 of almost 800 pages. It’s astonishing to me how so many of the issues Reagan’s remembered for were major concerns during his first year in office. I was all of twelve years old in 1981 and had just started watching the news regularly, so a lot of this was over my head at the time.

Moonshot

OK, after trying to load this up at my GoogleVid account, only to find repeated “server error” message, then trying to do the same at YouTube, with the same crappy result, I have successfully loaded some of the video of the lunar eclipse from Tuesday morning onto my new account at Live Leak.

It is still going in and out of focus, but I edited a nice sized chuck of decent footage out of the pile.

And to keep it from sucking too badly, I have added some audio you’ll enjoy.

Or find creepy.

And the first person who can name where the audio was pulled from wins 1.7 Billion kickass points (from which the Democrats will take 255,000,000 in taxes).

This isn’t going to help

And, in fact, it is probably going to do a whole lot of harm.

To add to the mortgage meltdown miseries, the credit panic, the plunging home sales and the rising foreclosures, here’s a new worry: a proposed cutoff of mortgage-interest tax deductions for houses with more than 3,000 square feet.

One of Capitol Hill’s most experienced and most powerful legislators is drafting a “carbon tax” bill that would do precisely that. The chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, John D. Dingell (D-Mich.), expects to introduce comprehensive climate-change legislation when Congress returns next month.

Besides imposing hefty new federal taxes on gasoline, the forthcoming bill would, in Dingell’s words, seek to “remove the mortgage interest deduction on McMansions — homes over 3,000 square feet.” Dingell said he recognizes that such a proposal will spark much criticism, but he also said it is essential to reducing carbon emissions by 60 percent to 80 percent by 2050.

“In order to address the issue of climate change, we must address the issue of consumption,” Dingell said in talking points prepared for town-hall discussions of the legislation. “We do that by making consumption more expensive.”

And by putting a knife into the back of an already wounded housing market.

In the upcoming month, the talking points will be changed to about how this will only effect “The Rich” and how people with big families “deserve to pay their fair share” towards stopping global warming.

Hopefully somebody will find the loophole the Senators have put in there so as to protect themselves.

But will John Edwards come out for it or against it?
