China slaps ban on reincarnation
China has rather brilliantly declared that, from next month, Tibetan Buddhist monks must have official permission to reincarnate, Newsweek reports.
The new legislation lays down strict guidelines for making a reappearance and is, according to a statement from the State Administration for Religious Affairs, “an important move to institutionalize management of reincarnation”.
The legislation is an administrative attempt to stop the Dalai Lama from coming back when his current Holiness passes on, but I can see the Chinese extending this writ to have an “Official” reason to kill any and all new Buddhists.
“Is that a Buddhist child? Well, he must then have illegally reincarnated and as punishment for breaking the law the government will have to kill him.”
They already do that under their ban on multiple procreation, this isn’t much of a stretch.

The legislation isn’t so much as a reason to kill “any and all new Buddhists”; it’s more to wrest control of the Tibetan Buddhist religion and followers away from the exiled Tibetan community (the 14th Dali Lama included) and put it in the hands of lamas approved by the Communist Chinese government. The Chinese to use this new law when Dali Lama #14 dies and the search for Dali Lama #15 begins. We’ll see two Dali Lamas vying for control of the religion; one backed by the Tibetan-exile community, the other backed by the Chi-Coms. They may be using the law now to legitimize the claim for their Panchen Lama (the 2nd-in-command after the Dali Lama).
