Children as young as 12 are being targeted in a push by gun clubs to attract new members.
The Sporting Shooters Association of Australia (SSAA) will this month launch its “sign up a junior” campaign.
The association already promotes “come and try” days at rifle ranges to families with young children.
Members of the association, the largest of its kind in the country, have been urged to enrol their “son, daughter, grandchild, nephew or niece”.
The body has discounted its annual fees for children and will give away a $3,500 quad bike to one new junior member.
National president Bob Green last month wrote to his 104,000 members to say new members were needed to “save the sport you love and wipe the smile off the anti-gun lobby’s face”.
It was essential to introduce children “into the world of shooting at an early age”.
“(It) doesn’t really matter if they are five or 15,” he wrote.
Gun Control Australia said a surge in young shooters could lead to a rise in violent crime.
“Guns and puberty are a dangerous mix,” said president John Crook.
“Targeting juniors increases the likelihood of gun addiction.
“The trouble with kids is that they may think that violence is a way of solving problems.”
Mr. Crook (and what an apt name he has, what with the stream of lies he spews) has some deep seated issues, the least of which is his belief that show firearm safety to children will turn them into criminals or people who will use their newfound knowledge to “solve problems”. His biogotry knows no bounds, I’m quite sure.
His statement would have been more truthful if he’d have stated that a surge in young shooters could lead to a rise in lesbianism among teenage males. The mullets would be atrocious, this is true, but the teenage female population would probably be a lot calmer.
Just don’t go saying that you would use your firearm to shoot a crook within earshot of this guy. He’d probably take it as a threat.
