The Scientific Method

I seem to be mostly recovered from a nasty bout with the flu. While I was out of it, I missed this excellent application of the scientific method towards a member of the Phylum Democrata, from the comic Get Fuzzy. If you missed it too, check it out.

The Soundboard: Pound of Sound

Week 3

Taking a cue from last week’s selection, we change it up to when Lonnie Smith wasn’t a band leader.

In 1968 saxophonist Lou Donaldson released his Midnight Creeper album and everyone got just a little more soul.

We’re gonna load up a pair of tracks from this album and give you a little bit more today.

The first track I want you to try out is a Teddy Vann tune which took some time to grow on me. It’s a rollicking little ditty that shows just how simultaneously loose and tight the 5-piece Lou put together for this album was.

(Lou Donalson – Alto Sax, Blue Mitchell – Trumpet, George Benson – Guitar, Lonnie Smith – Organ, Idris Muhammad – Drums)

Love Power (7:44)

Our second track is just too Cadillacing for words, so let me tell what “Cadillacing” means.

When I first started listening to jazz, it was because of a friend and co-worker of mine named Bob Jackson. I bought this album after hearing it in on “The Hi-Fi” at his parent’s place. He described this track as “Cadillacing” and I said “duh-what”?

It breaks down like this: A song that is “Cadillacing” would be what you would listen to as you drove your Cadillac to the marina where your yacht is moored. And we’re not talking those new BS Caddys. Something more along the lines of a 1975 Coupe de Ville with the 502ci V-8 and 8mpg.

So get to Cadillacing

Bag of Jewels (9:42)

—————

I’d just like to mention that the whole Midnight Creeper album is a whopper. I really wanted to have the title track as one of today’s tunes, but that would have shorted you on your pound.

I mean, just look at this cover.

You know that its gonna be good.

RNS Quote of the Day: 09/13/07

I am not surprised that no one is willing to take the credit for this bit of dead-tree idiocy.

Who should be deciding US policy on Iraq?

When President Bush addresses the nation tonight, he is expected to endorse a version of what’s come to be known on Capitol Hill as the Petraeus Report.

That strategy, set out by Army Gen. David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker this week, recommends a drawdown by July to roughly the same number of combat troops that were in Iraq in January, before the president added 30,000 soldiers.

But a growing number of lawmakers, on both sides of the aisle, are chafing at the recommendation and its source.

Generals, no matter how respected, shouldn’t set U.S. policy, they say. Congress should, in a bipartisan way.

It must have been all that college these folks took that screwed up their high school civics lessons.

Ladies and gents, I give you Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton

Accurate and comprehensive knowledge of foreign politics; a steady and systematic adherence to the same views; a nice and uniform sensibility to national character; decision, SECRECY, and despatch, are incompatible with the genius of a body so variable and so numerous.

Alexander Hamilton: The Federalist Papers #75 “The Treaty Making Power of the Executive”

And that was when there were only Congressmen for thirteen states and none of them were running off to Syria and demanding reparations for Iraqis.

Umm, yeah

Must be something in the water up there.

See if you can spot where this guy’s logic jumps the tracks.

Gun ban needed, not school metal detectors

Ontario Liberal Leader Dalton McGuinty said Wednesday that he does not want to see the provinces’ schools resort to installing metal detectors and having uniformed security officers patrol the halls in the wake of Tuesday’s fatal stabbing at a Toronto high school.

Such a move, he said, would amount to the Americanization of schools in Ontario.

“I see that as an absolute last resort,” Mr. McGuinty told reporters during an election campaign stop.

Instead, he said, Ontario needs to distinguish itself from the United States by imposing an outright ban on hand guns.

“Let’s ban handguns in Ontario,” he said. “Let’s ban handguns across the country. Let’s declare war against handguns.”

A 16-year-old Scarborough youth was stabbed to death on Tuesday on a walkway leading from Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute.

I really can’t say much after that. I’m just about to go cross-eyed trying to figure out how his mind works.

Ooops, I’ve fallen out of my chair.

Leaving the Field

In the comments section of my post from yesterday, where I quited the ranting out of respect for those who were murdered on September 11th, 2001, our good man Rivrdog says that even on that day, the fight goes on

You (and quite a few other righty stalwarts) gave up blogging yesterday on principle, leaving the 9-11 field to the enemy, and especially the kool-aid drinkers who think that 9-11 was all a Bush plot.

Can’t do that, my friend. The fight is 24/7/365.

Everyone has the right to their idea of how to spend the day, and I respect his.

I also have a firm belief in the idea that if someone is given enough rope, they will hang themselves.

And since everyone here knows how much I love a good hanging, I present what one of the bigger fish in the leftie pond had to say yesterday

You all know I’m a crank. So let me get cranky: I’m really fucking sick of 9/11.

It’s been six goddamn years. Can’t we move some of our energies onto addressing the devastation of Katrina?

Yes, it has been six years. And, yes, some of the things she finds annoying about what has happened in the US because of the September 11th attacks (airline security theater and delays in reconstruction) annoy me as well.

But I am not tired of remembering that this country got fat and happy and let some peckerwood with an overactive sexdrive and his hyper-ambitious wife run the country, sweeping this Islamofascist problem under the rug for the next guy, with ever increasingly costly results, culminating in the attacks of September 11th.

I give up one day to remember what life was like before that day, and to give those who hate the US more than anything else in the world the front and center of the stage to make asses of themselves.

The day was on par with the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, the sinking of the Lusitania, the attack on Fort Sumter, the British burning Washington DC to the ground and the battle of Lexington-Concord. Real, actual shots heard round the world, and this broad is tired of hearing about it?

Well, sorry to choke your cherry dearie, but the stick up your ass has a stick up its ass.

Katrina was a weather event that didn’t even hit at the place whose dry existence below sea-level was only possible because of human meddling with the ecosystem, something I’m currently told is horrible thing by the Global Warming Death Cult Pontiff, AlGore.

September 11th was so monumental that she probably can’t even wrap her silly little head around it. Which is probably why she’s sick of hearing about it.

Care for the Veterans

The problems at Walter Reed that were rightly pointed out a few months back became a club in the hand of the media and their favorite political party. It gave them ammunition to attempt to show how much they care about the men and women who have and currently serve our country.

Of course, they only really used the club to beat the current administration over the head with, but some improvements were made and that is one good thing to come out of the story.

One of the points whipped around at that time was the budget for the VA, with the media and their favorite party bantering about how it needs to be increased. Giving more money to the VA is a good thing, even if the administrative costs are eating much of it up, it eventually trickles down to more vets served better.

So why is the Democrat Party letting their second-most vocal woman in the Senate take $4 Billion away from the VA if they claim to care so much about fully-funding the VA?

Because they think she can do it quietly and get away with it.

The pork here revolves around the West Los Angeles Medical Center, though this is no average veterans’ facility. Donated to the government in 1888, the center is 387 sprawling, prime real-estate acres in the middle of tony West L.A. More than twice the size of the National Mall, it is surrounded by the mansions and playgrounds of the city’s elite, including the Bel Air Country Club and the Beverly Hills estates of Sylvester Stallone, Barry Bonds and Tim McGraw (to name a few).

Huge portions of the facility are also a veritable ghost town. It isn’t just that 387 acres is an enormous space, and far larger than any one veteran’s community in today’s America might ever need. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Los Angeles County also falls on the lowest end in terms of the percentage of veterans living in the area. Nationally, veterans make up about 12.7% of people over the age of 18; the county’s average is below 8.5%. Of 91 buildings on campus, 21 are today partially or wholly vacant. Meanwhile, the number of enrolled veterans in that facility is expected to decline by nearly a quarter over the next 20 years.

Which is why, when the Department of Veteran’s Affairs set up a process in 2002 to study its infrastructure and rationalize its facilities, it designated the West L.A. center as one of 18 sites that might be downsized, any extra land being used to produce more revenue for veterans’ needs. Under law, 108 acres of the L.A. site can’t be touched, but the remaining 200-plus acres sit in the middle of a highly desirable real estate area and could yield significant financial gain. The VA has yet to make any decisions, but according to government estimates, even a modest reuse of the property–say leasing out excess acreage–could result in an extraordinary $4 billion for better care for veterans everywhere.

…

Ms. Feinstein, who in the last election received some of her largest donations from the rich area, has been only too happy to come to its defense. She honed in on the military construction and veterans affairs bill–a sensitive spending vehicle that few Republicans would dare vote against, and that President Bush would be loath to veto. She then slipped in an earmark provision that would bar the VA from disposing or leasing any of the ground. Thus a potential $4 billion worth of help and aid for our nation’s veterans goes bye-bye in the name of preserving a view for those Hollywood actors who play veterans in the movies.

The Dems only care as far as their deep pocketed friends do.

Evidence of Insincerity

One of the left’s most annoying tenets is that taxes are too low for what “We” “Need” and that they need to be raised so that “We” can enjoy the fruits of the government’s redistributiion of monies.

But tax a beloved left-wing idea, and you’ll see just how quickly they love “Their” money.

Case in point: The state of Washington taxes automobile rentals at a hellacious 9.7% rate that amounts to a sales tax. King County does similarly, at a 9.9% rate, for a total of 18.6% on top of your daily rental car fee.

Flexcar is a business that operates in King County and thirteen other metropolitan areas. From their website:

Welcome to a new era in personal transportation. It’s called car-sharing and it’s incredibly easy! You share access to hundreds of Flexcar vehicles, often within a five-minute walk of your home or work. You reserve a car online or by phone; you drive – to a meeting, to run errands, or to hit the lumber yard; and you return to the car’s designated parking space, all for one hourly rate that covers gas, premium insurance and 150 free miles.

I’m not so sure that I’d be wanting to take one of their Honda Civics to a lumber yard, but oh well, for a monthly subscriber fee, I suppose I could if I wanted to.

This idea has been a favorite of local leftists since the company came to Seattle in 2000, and I suppose it is a rather convenient one for those who don’t leave their neighborhood much.

But now the Washington State Dept. of Revenue is demanding that Flexcar pay the Rental Car Tax and the locals are whining bloody murder. Never mind that the Flexcar folks themselves make the comparison of their service to a rental company at their website in order to show you how much money you’ll save by using their service. The Flexcar execs and the leftists who use the service swear up and down that they are not an actual rental service, even though they, well, rent cars to people on a subscription-and-reservation basis.

(Barely) Governor Gregoire has gotten word that her base in King County is unhappy and has issued a letter to the Dept. of Revenue suggesting that she would appreciate it if they wouldn’t say things like that, but didn’t actually tell them to stop.

Which brings up another conundrum for the leftists who are up in arms about having to pay “Their fair share” of taxes (like how I slipped that class-warfare argument in?):
If one were to believe the Democrat’s BS Line that not paying taxes or actually cutting taxes costs the government money, then all of these people who use the Flexcar service aren’t owning vehicles and aren’t paying registration fees and emissions system testing fees and are actually costing the state government hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid tax money. It was these same leftists who opposed the idea of $30 car registration tabs, though I notice that the ones who do own cars also quietly enjoy the lower costs and don’t triple their fees and send it off to the state.
But because the leftists only care about their class-warfare slogans when they involve someone else who they think makes too much money, they’ll never see their hypocrisy on this topic. I’m sure the State Revenuers will back off now that Gregoire has lent them her opinion and the whole kerfuffle will quite down.

Tis a pity she’s a whore for the hypocritical green-weenies.

Am I the only one who caught this?

So I’m cruising the latest article that is supposed to induce fright in the members of the Global Warming Death Cult.

Its about how the Arctic Ice Caps are supposedly now melting faster than previously thought because of those of us who are non-cult members. Though not fast enough to save the guy who was going to show the world how Global Warming was creating the long sought Northwest Passage who is now stuck in the ice and is fighting of some of the non-drowned Polar Bears.

I was giggling my way through the article when I reached a paragraph buried in it’s dead-center that made so much sense and was wondering if anyone had shown this to any other cult members or their guru, AlGore?

Melting of the Arctic ice cap does not contribute to sea level rise. Floating ice, like that around the North Pole, already displaces water, like ice cubes in a glass of tea. When the ice melts, sea level remains unchanged, though salinity can be altered.

Duh.

The paragraph ends stating that the only way for the sea level to rise is if water frozen on land melts into the sea, like that on Greenland (which melts and refreezes depending on the seasons) or Antarctica (which is actually thickening).

AlGore and his Gaia-hadists can go smoke fat monkey-pole.

Something you knew

But didn’t have the numbers on. And now that you will, it will probably frighten you just a bit. Justifiably.

Everybody knows that the media and academia lean left. But these elites are bipartisan wafflers when compared with psychologists who donate roughly 21 times as much to Democratic candidates and political action committees than Republican ones. According to Opensecrets.org, psychologists gave 526 donations worth $499,982 to Democratic causes and candidates in the ’04 and ’06 cycles and the ’08 cycles to date. In contrast, the shrinks opened their wallets to Republicans only 43 times, and gave just $22,255. Maybe that explains why some conservatives prefer prayer to psychotherapy.

As a commenter Eric of Classical Values notes in the comments there

Considering that the profession is overwhelmingly left wing, I would assume that most psychologists favor gun control. Not to sound paranoid, but this makes me wonder whether they might be quick to label gun owners as less than mentally fit. (With predictable, lifelong consequences to their patients’ right to keep and bear arms.)
