The Soundboard: Pound of Sound

Week 3

Taking a cue from last week’s selection, we change it up to when Lonnie Smith wasn’t a band leader.

In 1968 saxophonist Lou Donaldson released his Midnight Creeper album and everyone got just a little more soul.

We’re gonna load up a pair of tracks from this album and give you a little bit more today.

The first track I want you to try out is a Teddy Vann tune which took some time to grow on me. It’s a rollicking little ditty that shows just how simultaneously loose and tight the 5-piece Lou put together for this album was.

(Lou Donalson – Alto Sax, Blue Mitchell – Trumpet, George Benson – Guitar, Lonnie Smith – Organ, Idris Muhammad – Drums)

Love Power (7:44)

Our second track is just too Cadillacing for words, so let me tell what “Cadillacing” means.

When I first started listening to jazz, it was because of a friend and co-worker of mine named Bob Jackson. I bought this album after hearing it in on “The Hi-Fi” at his parent’s place. He described this track as “Cadillacing” and I said “duh-what”?

It breaks down like this: A song that is “Cadillacing” would be what you would listen to as you drove your Cadillac to the marina where your yacht is moored. And we’re not talking those new BS Caddys. Something more along the lines of a 1975 Coupe de Ville with the 502ci V-8 and 8mpg.

So get to Cadillacing

Bag of Jewels (9:42)

—————

I’d just like to mention that the whole Midnight Creeper album is a whopper. I really wanted to have the title track as one of today’s tunes, but that would have shorted you on your pound.

I mean, just look at this cover.
