These people consider themselves “The Moderate Center”

While it appears from more than one point of view that the War in Iraq and the War on Terror are situations from which we may never be able to extricate ourselves, from the mountains of Pakistan comes a very simple solution: convert to Islam.

Before we reject this out of hand, lets seriously consider it for a moment:  Osama Bin Laden promised the wars would be over if Americans convert to Islam.

This may sound like a lot to ask from the most religious country in the industrialized world.  But of all the Christians in America today who profess to be religious, how many of us are seriously devout?

Easy as one, two, BANG!

OH, that’s just what they need

Rey Ramsey, local activist demands that the Fed give free high-speed internet to those living in public housing in this piece from the Seattle Times

Many low-income people live in affordable housing subsidized by federal and state governments. The president should issue an executive order directing the Department of Housing and Urban Development to mandate the inclusion of high-speed Internet in new and refurbished public housing units, and promote and permit the inclusion of broadband as an operating expense. Doing so would be a first step to helping low-income people gain the tools to achieve economic self-sufficiency and participate in the modern work force.

Ramsey wants to give the internet to a group of people who have already show society that, if given the chance, they will sit on their asses and watch The People’s Court all damn day.

The Internet.

I have a full time job and I can barely get off this damn thing to save my life. Take my job away, give me free public housing, free food and a check every month and I’ll be the most bloggingest blogger you’ve ever met. Instapundit would pale in comparison. I’d be a living RSS feed. Y’all would be begging me for an addy to send cash to so that I’d stop typing.

Ramsey is just another in a long line of excuse makers as to why poor people are poor. He doesn’t like to think that it’s because they’re lazy, so he runs around using the excuse that it is because they have to go to the Public Library to access the internet.

Tough shit for them. I hope they use the bus pass my tax dollars paid for accordingly to get these all-important “opportunites” afforded by the magic of the Information Superhighway (whose servers my tax dollars maintain). I hope they don’t get carpal-tunnel from “hitting the enter key” too much.

Not to be rude, but Rey Ramsey can kiss my ass before his loser sycophants get another penny of my money for their lifestyle choices.

The Soundboard: The Group Dynamic

A day late, but that just means I haven’t fallen asleep in the blogging chair for nearly two hours like I did yesterday.

Yes, it is that comfy here. Moving on….

I’ll be sticking with The Whigs again, this week, in case you haven’t guessed that from last week’s intro.

Our album this time around is their fifth release, 1996’s Black Love.

A very heavy R&B influence can be heard on this album, which is strange as they recorded it in the whitest metropolitan area in the nation, Seattle (the burbs of Woodinville and Edmonds, to be exact).

Pounds of Wah and and a nice dosing of organ flood this album, with “Going to Town” and “Honky’s Ladder” as the radio hits you’d probably recognize.

But today’s tunage will be neither of those.

Blame Etc.

Gotta love the growl.

Bulletproof

Is your game bulletproof?

The real magic ont his album though is the closer “Faded”, and I would post it, but it is a bit unrelatable without a listening to the whole album and would therefore be a waste of both our times. Just click the link above and get it to your house.

I’m Not Like Fred (no, not that Fred)

As my wife will tell you, I have far too many hobbies — and that’s just the ones she knows about.

A good number of these hobbies are the kind that are served by a “hobby shop.” In most of the burgs I’ve lived in, the hobby and game shops were the same thing — which was fine, because folks like me who played D&D, AD&D, Car Wars, Avalon Hill games, etc., etc. also were into model railroading, miniature figures, plastic model kits, and other traditional hobbies.

Sadly forays into hobby shops were always joyful excursions of wonder and excitement — until I had to interact with the store employees.

In short, throughout a couple decades of regular hobby-shop visits in three states, I have yet to encounter a hobby-shop employee who was even remotely customer-friendly.
Now I know that the kinds of customers such an eclectic mix of products attracts will include a fair number of annoying, um, enthusiasts, like this guy Fred. I’m not like Fred. So why not greet me and the other non-Freds out there with at least a friendly smile?
I’m going to keep a weather eye on this new blog by a hobby-shop employee. I can’t speak to this fellow’s customer-service chops, but he at least writes well.

And the title indicates his heart’s in the right place.

Remember “Do-Overs”?

Also remember how you were always told that you couldn’t pull crap like that when you were an adult?

Well, they lied, because I’m calling one right now.

Too much work and not enough sleep is telling me that  should suspend blogging until tomorrow morning as my mind won’t let me care about anything in particular until I catch a few Z’s.

So either later today, or more likely tomorrow, The Soundboard and other items of note shall return to RNS. Until then. imagine me passed out sleeping with The Wife painting weird crap on my forehead, cause I’m that whupped.

Later.

Recently acquired in my travels

I made mention of Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land yesterday and then hinted that I may have made more purchases along those lines whilst I was away.

The hint was true, and here is the list:

Top that off with his collection of short stories Assignment in Eternity, as well as The Cat Who Walks Through Walls, The Menace from Earth and Methuselah’s Children and I think I’ve got Heinlein covered for a bit. I’ll add Time Enough For Love shortly because the Lazarus Long character sounds fascinating.

Orson Scott Card’s Ender series, books #1, 2 & 4. When I can find #3 and the rest used and at a decent price they too will be added.

Also, a matching, leather bound hardcover set of Roget’s and Websters 21st Century series, in excellent condition, minus the box ($4).

A first printing, hardcover w/dust jacket copy of William Diehl’s “Sharkey’s Machine” in 90% condition ($3)

A new copy of Douglas Adams’ The Ultimate Hitchhikers. I use the copy I keep out for reference, but because it is rather special, I really needed a copy I wouldn’t mind getting thumb prints on.

What makes my copy special, you ask?

HGTG1.jpg

Click and weep, mortals.

Lastly, due to the mention of Dread Cthulhu a couple weeks back during my quest for a personalized license plate for Buddy the Jeep, I decided to build up a collection of Lovecraft.

So I found and bought a first edition paperback version of The Doom That Came To Sarnath and Other Tales, followed by the purchase of a first edition, trade paper version of Bloodcurdling Tales of Horror and the Macabre.

I spend waaaay too much time in bookstores, but never very often. Maybe I should reverse them?

Feel free to help me fill in the missing spots where ever you see them. I see another tour of the used bookstores of Spokane in my future.

RNS Quote of the Day: 10/24/07

Found at Samizdata

So much of left-wing thought is a kind of playing with fire by people who don’t even know that fire is hot.

George Orwell

There is such a thing as “left-wing thought”?

Now that’s a negotiation

Is your NATO ally failing to meet their obligation in Afghanistan?

Then you negotiating stand point can and should include a reminder that 1600 of your troops who are twiddling their thumbs in a central European country could have to be pulled out of there in order to cover for said ally.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates will consider shifting U.S. troops from Kosovo to Afghanistan next year if NATO Allies do not fulfill their commitments, U.S. government officials said.

Gates, in Ukraine on Sunday to ask eastern European countries for help in the war, had first considered laying the threat before NATO defense ministers this week at a meeting in the Netherlands, senior U.S. officials said.

But upon the advice of senior military officers, the Pentagon chief has extended the U.S. commitment to Kosovo to summer 2008. If NATO allies have not sent more troops, trainers and equipment to Afghanistan by then, Washington will consider pulling its 1,600 troops out of NATO’s Kosovo force, KFOR.

Color Me Unmoved

As I understand it, SoCal is going through one of its four seasons: Fire, Mudslide, Earthquake and Summer.

This particular fire season is muy mucho. Color me unmoved.

Unmoved by people who do not want the hinterlands around their homes “disturbed” and purposely vote for people who refuse to manage the hinterlands, thereby turning them into a tinderbox. They then build more homes armpit to armpit along the border of said tinderbox, because restricting building further into the hinterlands causes property prices to rise, and then they top it all off by planting the wildly popular Eucaliptus trees in their yards, which, when applied with fire, becomes a Molotov Cocktail tree.

And lastly, they demand federal money to rebuild their homes in exactly the same spot.

Rinse and repeat.

Sound cold-hearted? Maybe so.

But when I read crap like this from so-called respectable left-wing bloggers, I loose all ability to empathize with their plight

When I got home last night there wasn’t any parking, which I take to mean that a lot of evacuated people are staying with friends and family in the neighborhood; the beach being the farthest point on land on which to run. This, of course, got me thinking where would I go should I get the dreaded reverse 911 call. All there is is sand and then water and, believe me, bassets don’t float.

He is just now thinking of where he should evac to? Is this guy a complete and total fucking idiot?

Why yes. Yes, he is.

He should have all this thought of in advance. This is why Katrina should have been considered Darwinism. Wherein the stupid people were stuck in the deathtrap that could have been the Superdome because of their inability to manage their own lives.

You plan where you are going to go (multiple routes in case of blockages in any particular direction) what you are going to take with you (if you have enough warning to gather things), and how to make sure that everyone you live with makes it to the meeting point safely, BEFORE you have to worry about it.

People like TBogg shouldn’t get a “reverse 911 call”. They should be deemed too stupid to handle anything more than waffle-making and be left in their ignorance.

Sound cold-hearted? Maybe so.

But should someone this ignorant be allowed to breed, let alone vote? Methinks not.

He made his bed, or in all actuality, consciously refused to do so, and should therefore be made to lie in it.

caburning.jpg

Of course, maybe TBogg should remember not to smoke in bed.

The indians used to call the LA Valley “The Valley of Fire” because it burned rather often. Make that stop for a few decades and then drop a lighting strike (or an arsonist) in the middle of it, and that is what you get.
