Important Action Alert (Updated)

And I’m not joking.

Mad Rocket Scientists sends me an notice that the Washington State Legislature is looking at a pair of bills that could change the face of concealed carry on state university campuses.

Current law states that each university can make their own rules for concealed carry on their property.

SB-6860 would repeal that law and make campus concealed carry legal across the state.

It is backed by 2A Freedom Fighters Senators Pam Roach (R-31st LD), Valerie “Val” Stevens (R-39th LD) and Jerome Delvin (R – 8th LD)
———-

SB-6841 would also repeal that law but would make it illegal to carry concealed on all state university capuses.

The usual suspects are in on this one: Widely known gun bigots Senators Adam Kline and Jeanne Kohl-Welles have gathered up a couple of other bigoted Senatorial signatories Paull Shin, Ken Jacobsen and Ed Murray. Unsurprisingly, all Democrats.

There is a hearing for both this Thursday, February the 7th at 10am in the Cherberg Building.

I will not be able to attend, but I will be writing my letters to my Legislators in just a moment and emailing them off shortly thereafter.

Here is a link to the Find Your Legislator page.

If you are a Washington State resident or know of a gunnie in Washington, get them this notice ASAP. We cannot let the Dems make our adult education campuses “Gun Free Zones” where those who would harm citizens are free to hunt their prey.

Pooper Wednesday

Today’s RNS Quote of the Day, from the Iron Lady

Nothing is more obstinate than a fashionable consensus.

Margaret Thatcher

How anyone can vote for McCain is beyond me.

But alas, he did pull out a somewhat impressive victory yesterday. Romney is still not out of the game, but he has a lot of ground to make up, so he’d better do it quickly. I want a brokered convention more than I want my Marlin 1895GS.

I’m loving that Obama is giving HRC a run for her money, and that he has more money than she does. They’ll have a very entertaining brokered convention. I’m hoping for riots.

I have a question for you all and I would like wide participation so send your friends to help me out.

Who is more dangerous as a presidential candidate:

The idealogue who has ideas and will stop at nothing to enact them, no mater how stupid or dangerous the ideas are, or

The power hungry, but highly intelligent person who wants only to extend of their own power?

The former makes big steps, sometimes taking us all off a ravine, all the while telling how wonderful it will be at the bottom, where as the latter will take little baby steps into things, but only if it forwards their own benefit.

Answers will be accepted from now until 00:00 Monday morning. I’ll be thinking it over the whole while, taking in folks’ answers and give you my answer then.

So, I heard they ran out of Democrat ballots near San Francisco/San Jose because so many folks wanted to get in on the HRC/Obama race. Big Republican machine down thar?

Also, it looks like Seattle messed up Los Angeles’ elections. Well, not directly, but the guy who messed up the King County portion of the Washington State Governor’s race in 2004, also known as Dean Logan, is the guy who couldn’t get voting machines to polling places in L.A.

Youse guyz is welcome.

And lastly, the fourth instance of underwater international telecommunication lines being cut happened yesterday.

Maybe someone was out stump speeching yesterday and was unhappy that he wasn’t getting the votes he deserves?

As if daycare didn’t already cost enough

The Washington State Legislature has floated a bill that would not only unionize all “Childcare Providers”.

Section 8:
The legislature finds that as of 2000, child care workers in the state earned an average hourly wage of eight dollars and twenty-two cents, only fifty-eight percent received medical insurance, only sixty-six percent received paid sick leave, and only seventy-three percent received paid vacation.

They’re excuse for doing this is that since the wages and benefits are so low, no one wants to make a career out of keeping little Billy mentally entertained while mom works. Never mind that half to two-thirds of her paycheck already goes to cover the cost of this service, while dad’s pays the bills and puts food on the table.

The legislators pushing this also say that with people making a career out of working at a daycare will make the services better. That is arguable, but I sincerely doubt it. People either like working with kids or they don’t. If they do and they’re good at it, they’re wages will increase proportionally.

One more excuse I’ve seen hidden between the lines is that the state will more easily be able to do background checks on the child care providers if they become unionized. This is bullshit. We already do background checks of daycare employees at the risk of the establishment losing their license.

I may be missing some history here, but I can’t for the life of me, remember a government advocating for a new union. Help me out here as I am truly not recollecting anything like this.

These legislators do understand that when they mention “A Living Wage” that they’re talking of at least a 50% wage increase from the one mentioned above. Can John and Jane Public afford the corresponding increase in the cost of child care? Answer: Most likely not.

But I’m sure that in the next legislative session they’ll offer subsidies to those who aren’t already getting my tax dollars to pay for their kids. The kids are their dependents, not mine.

And of course, since this is Washington State, the successful passage of this bill means big increases in donations to Democrat candidates in the state and federally from the union/s that get the right to bargain for these people..

And to top it all off with a bow, the writers of this horrible piece of legislation have slid an “Emergency Clause” onto the bill, so that if/when it gets passed, no one will be able to challenge it before it becomes law.

This is what happens when you give the Democrats a majority in government.

It’s Super Duper Tuesday!

Hillary’s cryin’.
Obama’s poll numbers are flying’.
McCain’s lyin’
Romney’s buyin’.

And I don’t get to vote for another two damn weeks!

Eh, no one I want to cast a vote for anyway. Hopefully they’ll still be more than one candidate in the race by the time it swings my way so I can mumble arguments with myself under my breath in the voting booth.

Both work and then physical therapy ran long today and I got nothin’ except an anecdote about one of my co-workers who just figured out that 40% of delegates to the Democrat National Convention are super-delegates and that primary and caucus voters ideas and decisions don’t really matter to that party.

To say he was unhappy would be an understatement.

You should have heard him after I pointed out that the votes of Democrat primary voters in Washington State don’t matter one whit to the state party. They look at it as a “suggestion” and then toss the delegates to whomever they want to.

You’d have though the state Dems shot his dog.

If you get to vote today, do so with vigor. Hopefully you aren’t voting against someone this early in the process.

Myself, I’m gonna hit the rack and wake up early to watch the returns come in over a meal of shrimp, scallops and clams. If I didn’t have to go to work afterwards, I’d pound down a Porter in the process.

Be good to yourselves folks.

There is no such thing as an “Accidental Discharge”

There are only “Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wounds” (SIGW).

Unfortunately, I got to see one up close and personal during my range trip this weekend.

For a week and a half I’d been organizing a range day with some of my co-workers. Which day, where, what time, etc., between a dozen people coming from all directions isn’t easy to do. But we finally all got settled on Saturday, @ 1300. Some of us met up early for some grub and then headed out to the indoor pistol range.

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, the guy whom I started this all organizing for wasn’t able to show up. His wife got called in to work and his son had sports activities to go to, so he had to cancel out. Aside from the half-magazine he fired through an AK-74 that he fired while a conscript in the late-80’s Soviet military Basic Training, it would have been his first time ever with firearms. But we had co-worker Mike and his new Sig 1911 4in to break in, so I was still jazzed up to go.

Being the day before Superbowl Sunday, the range was packed and we had to wait 15-20 minutes for our lanes. We spent the time letting the range staff get the pistols inspected and verify that we had no steel/aluminum cased ammo, during which we ooh’d and aaah’d over our assembled arsenals (no touchy by non-range staff in the waiting area).

We got into our lanes and off we went. Mike’s 1911 works like a dream and he is very pleased. Jeff’s .45ACP EAA Witness was having misfire issues, so I stepped up to check it out. Looked to be a broken firing pin spring or maybe even a weak mainspring. The range’s smith was off for the weekend, so I dug through my wallet and gave him the card for a reliable guy on the north end of town near his home.

Co-worker Dave brought his NAA .22 Mag Mini-Revolver. I dislike these minis for even back-up-back-up purposes, mostly because they’re too damn small to be reasonable. Also, the drop out/reinsert cylinder operation to reload it is just not easily done safely. About nine years ago I had seen an unwanted discharge during that reloading process. I even told Dave about it.

I think you can see where this is going.

I had run out to the truck to grab another set of ears (the range’s free ones were not working for one of the group). As I walked back inside I saw Dave and Mike standing just outside the waiting area with one of the range staff applying pressure to the bandage around Dave’s palm. There was about an twelve inch pool of blood on the floor.

Apparently, while reinserting the cylinder, Dave pulled the hammer back so that there was room for the cylinder to roll into place. He either lost grip of the hammer or had his finger on the trigger spur and the gun went off, sending a .22 caliber projectile at magnum velocity through the palm of his right hand, just below the top two knuckles of his middle and ring finger and into the cinderblock wall. There were also several cuts and burns.

I took over the “applying pressure” position from the range guy. Luckily, there was a major hospital less than ten blocks away and Mike went out to go get his car so we could drive Dave to the ER as that was faster than waiting for the box van with sirens and lights. Dave, being the consummate “tough guy” was refusing all medical treatment and just wanted to go home. I was not having any of it and using a mixture of threats, comedy and factual medical evidence of the filthiness of burned gunpowder, I finally got him into the car for the 90 second ride.

I went back to the range, helped the range staff clean up and Jeff and I gathered up everybody’s stuff, filled out our portions of the range’s incident report and took off for the ER.

Dave is pretty much a “gun guy”. Every year for the past 30-plus years he takes off for the hinterlands to go hunt deer, elk, bear, cougar and whatever other game he’s licensed to get into the crosshairs of his .300 Win Mag. He is not a newbie to boomsticks. He just wasn’t being as careful as he needed to be.

This isn’t the first SIGW I’ve seen. I’ve also seen people shoot themselves in the foot and in the front of the calf, luckily all small caliber stuff, but this was the first one with powder burns.

It is always the same thing: Someone just isn’t being careful enough. You can talk to them about The Colonel’s Four, you can tell them about prior SIGWs and you can warn them over and over and over again to be careful, but if their head just isn’t in it, something bad can easily happen.

Afterwards, you (or at least I do) simultaneously get both pissed off at them for doing it (hopefully after they’ve been cleaned up at the hospital and not while you’re applying pressure) as well as what I guess you could borrow from the Four Stages of Loss: “Bargaining” with the incident. That if you’d have just been closer, been able to verbally warn them again, etc., then it wouldn’t have happened. I’ve stopped that yesterday morning since I remember that without being able to guide his hands there is nothing anyone but he could have done.

If you’d have seen me walking to the ER after Jeff and I collected the gunstuffs and filled out the forms, you might have mistaken me for someone with Tourettes. “F’n a Dave” and “f’n didn’t listen” and “gotdam mini revolvers” and “sumbitch better be grateful it wasn’t somethin bigger” and lots or repeated “F*@k, f*@k,f*@k, f*@k!”. All of which stopped as soon as we walked through the auto-doors (they don’t let you hang around with that sort of language).

According to the ER doc on duty, it was the luckiest unlucky shot he’s seen in a while. Total flesh wound. No bones, very few nerves, full range of movement (minus the swelling), etc.. Dave will have some serious meds for pain and infection and won’t be able to work for a couple weeks. He’ll also have a month or so of physical therapy to make sure his range of movement stays good. But other than that, the only truly permanently damaged part of him is his ego. And I’m still pissed off at him enough to say that he deserves that to get knocked down a few notches.

And that is how my 20 minutes at the range turned into three hours at the ER.

He wrote them so that we could learn them:

1. All guns are always loaded (until you establish whether they are or not).

2. Keep your gun pointed in a safe direction at all times: on the range, at home, loading, or unloading.

3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target (and you are ready to shoot).

4. Be sure of your target. Know what it is, what is in line with it and what is behind it.

Lt. Colonel John Dean “Jeff” Cooper

Experience should teach us to be most on our guard to protect liberty when the government’s purposes are beneficial. The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well meaning but without understanding.

FYI

I’m getting a boucoup spam attack at this time and the anti-spamware program has been turned up to “Total Beeatch” to try and keep the bastards at bay until I get back from the range later today to deal with them properly.

If you have troubles commenting, my apologies. But a shotgun to the server does me no bit of good.

Sadly

This was our “illegal immigration investigation” technique for far too long.

Normally, a non-injury rear-end collision wouldn’t warrant a news story. But in an ironic twist, this crash involved a van full of illegal immigrants which slammed into an SUV owned by the Department of Homeland Security.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said the Chrysler van was heading west Tuesday morning when it was involved in a three-vehicle chain-reaction crash near the Elliot Road off-ramp. Harold Sanders with DPS said, “the 11 illegal immigrants inside the van were turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.”

Illegal Immigrants: Rear-ending the government vehicles Americans won’t.

At least nowadays we have SOME semblance of a program visiting employers of illegals.

And while I do not believe that it is the bank’s job to call ICE whenever they get an illegal trying transact money, they could at least have the decency to not complete said transactions.

Michelle Malkin points out the raising of the pitch of the whine about illegals losing their homes during the mortgage troubles of late.

As an economic slowdown and the subprime mortgage crisis deepen across the United States, Hispanic immigrants are increasingly in danger of losing their jobs and their homes.

Both legal and illegal immigrants joined Americans in buying homes they could barely afford when the market spiraled upward and many have been caught with mortgages higher than the value of their homes as prices have slumped in the past year.

I don’t like illegals BUILDING homes in America, let alone owning them.

Oh sure, let’s bail them out too while we’re at it.

RNS Quote of the Day: 02/01/08

Sailor Curt corrects yesterday’s QotD

It’s like taking a bucket of water from the deep end and, after inefficiently conveying it to the shallow end, slopping a good 1/4 of the contents of the bucket into the dirt during the trip, pouring the remnants back into the shallow end.

You may FEEL like your accomplishing something, and to an outside observer it may APPEAR that you’re merely accomplishing nothing; but in reality, with every trip, the pool has less and less water until, eventually, there’s not even enough left to fill the bucket.

Sailor Curt

And why do I have the feeling that government is like Mr. Creasote: Always needing a bucket after it feeds.
