Salute!

While David and I were off Boomershooting, it seems that the SCOTUS let loose a 6-3 decision to uphold Voter ID requirements.

A salute to Justices Alito, Scalia, Thomas, Stevens, Roberts and Kennedy.

If I could, I’d send you each a case of beer, but since I cannot, I’ll just tip one back to you.

Speaking of beverages, both David and I brought gifts for Bob and Kenda Tribble, the proprietors of Trib’s Place (the Official residence of RNS during Boomershoot and somewhere you should visit if you’re anywhere near the area).

David brought the very delectable MacAllan 18.

I brought an assortment of beers from my local retailer of 850+ brews, 99 Bottles.

Sadly, Trib had recently undergone knee surgery and was not actually supposed to be allowed alcohol. However, ignoring doctor’s orders is a great American pastime, and a drop or two may have made it past his teeth. Of the available selection, the Arrogant Bastard Oaked Ale was a big hit. It has also rather quickly become one of the big hits at RNS Blogstation Tacoma as well, which is why I bought a few extra with me to Idaho.

And this is why

We don’t let New York, Los Angeles and Chicago run the country

Call for handgun ban passes overwhelmingly

Toronto – A lopsided city council vote of 39-3 calling for a federal ban on handgun ownership came as little surprise yesterday. What proved revealing was how two right-wing councillors, seen by some as future mayoral candidates, came down on opposite sides of the vote.

Councillor Michael Thompson (Ward 37, Scarborough Centre), one of three who opposed the mayor’s call for a federal ban, described the effort as “political junk food.”

After pointed questions to Mayor David Miller, who made the request for the ban his key item for the council session that opened yesterday, Mr. Thompson said “to suggest that a ban is the solution today, we are providing a false sense of security.

“It is an empty gesture,” he scoffed.

And that gesture could be described as simply a single finger pointed upwards at the citizens who wish to account for their own defense.

Notice that Britons aren’t saying these things about Canadian cities

America’s “Safety Catch”

Despite the fact there are more than 200 million guns in circulation, there is a certain tranquility and civility about American life.

And then after a couple dozen paragraphs about a guy being stupid with a gun, the NYT vs. Montana Governor Schweitzer, Virginia Tech and then DC Vs. Heller, they actually take the time to talk to Britons about America. You know, like the opening paragraph of the piece implied.

Why is it then that so many Americans – and foreigners who come here – feel that the place is so, well, safe?

A British man I met in Colorado recently told me he used to live in Kent but he moved to the American state of New Jersey and will not go home because it is, as he put it, “a gentler environment for bringing the kids up.”

This is New Jersey. Home of the Sopranos.

Brits arriving in New York, hoping to avoid being slaughtered on day one of their shopping mission to Manhattan are, by day two, beginning to wonder what all the fuss was about. By day three they have had had the scales lifted from their eyes.

I have met incredulous British tourists who have been shocked to the core by the peacefulness of the place, the lack of the violent undercurrent so ubiquitous in British cities, even British market towns.

“It seems so nice here,” they quaver.

Well, it is!

Ten or 20 years ago, it was a different story, but things have changed.

And this is Manhattan.

Wait till you get to London Texas, or Glasgow Montana, or Oxford Mississippi or Virgin Utah, for that matter, where every household is required by local ordinance to possess a gun.

Folks will have guns in all of these places and if you break into their homes they will probably kill you.

They will occasionally kill each other in anger or by mistake, but you never feel as unsafe as you can feel in south London.

It is a paradox. Along with the guns there is a tranquility and civility about American life of which most British people can only dream.

Because they voted for people who chose gun control as the solution to the problem. Hmm, sounds like Chicago, Detroit, Washington DC, and most of California: The national leaders in murder rates.

Something to ponder here.

Helping the Workers

By ruining their drive home

3 May Day marches likely to slow traffic

Three separate May Day marches Thursday are expected to cause traffic disruptions in downtown Seattle. Metro Transit expects all bus service will be affected from 4 to 6:30 p.m., with delays of up to an hour. Passengers are encouraged to use bus lines that serve downtown via the Seattle transit tunnel.

And even with the bus tunnel service, King County Metro bus service is telling their drivers they may be an hour late in getting off work.

And don’t forget that today is also the ILWU’s planned day for a west coast walk-off

The International Longshore & Warehouse Union began planning in February for a coast-wide protest Thursday against the war in Iraq. May 1 is traditionally a day that celebrates labor and workers’ rights.

Such an event could have an impact beyond the port, including companies that depend on importing and exporting goods.

Boomer Video

After and hour long attempt to upload these vids, LiveLeak reminded me that I cannot upload more than 100MB of data to their servers.

So….

I hope you all have hi-speed connections because I’m putting them where I normally put the Soundboard tunage and posting links.

Due to space considerations, I’ll only be posting the best three vids.

Here we have just a random few minutes of Boomershoot, shortly after the opening horn. 70 some odd shooters firing at hundreds of targets. Of course, the 380 yard targets get hit earlier and more often, but watch around the snow on the hillside for explosions. Video is 148megs.

This video is the same shot, just a few minutes later. I’m shooting, David is spotting, the target is at approximately 625 yards. My first couple shots had elevation problems (my fault) and my misses were being measured in feet. Problem corrected, I continue to make the boomer very frightened until I make the ultimate miss. Video is 76megs.

This last video is of Boomer Clean-Up. There were approximately 10 positions lined up approximately 30yds from the berm (shooters just outside of the right hand edge of the frame). Each position had one shooter. Each shooter had five 4-inch targets to themselves and then there were many, many 3-inch targets placed along the berm to be taken out first come/first serve style.

That video is 130megs and is also proof that being closer does not increase your shot/hit ratio.

Ry Jones also has video of the opening fireball and also footage of the low-flow toilet which was blown up in honor of the political satirist, Dave Barry.

Enjoy.

Boomershoot Proof of Concept

Joe Huffman had expressed skepticism that a bullet from one of my specialty pistols would have enough velocity to explode boomers past the 385-yard line.

IMG_16901.JPGWell, at Boomershoot 2008 I exploded a large boomer at about 620 yards with my factory Encore pistol and its 15″ Bullberry barrel in .308 Win, using Black Hills 175-grain Match loads with the Moly-coated bullets. Muzzle velocity was 2351 fps.

Even better, I went from 385 to 620 yards without clicking any elevation into my scope. I wanted to not only prove the concept of firing a pistol with precision at a distant small target, but also prove the concept of fast target acquisition “in the field” at varying distances simply by changing point of aim on the scope reticle — at least in my hands. On Saturday, I had zeroed with this load at the 385-yard line, holding dead center for elevation on the left edge of a 4″ target to blow it up. To get to targets up on the hill on Sunday, I simply held up on the Burris Ballistic Plex reticle the requisite number of stadia lines. In this case, I just placed the tip of the lower plex post on the lower right corner of the boomer, and away it went. It took some trial and error to get to that point, of course — but it worked!

Boomershoot 2008 AAR

Best Boomershoot for me EVAR!! Bar none!

The only way I think that I could make you get just how good 08 was is to tell you that I wish I’d had the whole week to be there and pulling triggers. In fact, Dave the GM Guy (henceforth to be called simply “Dave”) and David and I all agreed that the minimum enjoyable time frame should be: Shooting Wed-Thurs-Fri and Event Sat-Sun.

Unfortunately for our demands, Joe has to work within a set schedule and has an all volunteer staff. They are already worked rather hard as it is, so I guess I’m going to have to figure out some other way to get my fix. I’ll let you know if I succeed.

In the meantime, I await the passage of another 360 days, give or take, for the next event. Yes, you should have been there.

Below are some of the many pictures taken by Dave. David will be along with his in a day or so as he gets settled back in at home, I’m sure.

We arrived on site Friday morning to find it a bit frosty. Then it snowed. We immediately began building the shelter.

IMG_1657.JPG

And the cover not too long after the previous picture.

IMG_1679.JPG

Once under cover, the snow was actually helpful during Field Fire, as doping wind was, literally, a breeze (though the actual winds varied from 12-15mph with gusts of 25mph).

Saturday was the complete opposite. Barely a cloud in the sky and 70 degrees.

There is a reason this man was smiling

IMG_1684.JPG

More of David’s pistols

IMG_1690.JPG

Even though you can’t see it, I’m smiling too

IMG_1687.JPG

I think Dave smiled the most though

IMG_1700.JPG

Ahh, the “Day Of”. 70-75 degrees, just sunny enough to get some light mirage going, and very light winds. Perfect.

IMG_1701.JPG

Again, this is an event not to be missed. Great folks, safe event. This truly is the Premier Long Distance Precision Rifle Shooting Event in the Pacific NW. I’ll let you all know when spots for 2009 open up (after I get my spot, of course). Don’t let yourself miss it.

Speaking of great people, the Saturday night Boomershoot Banquet raised over $1200 for Soldier’s Angels. Half of that money started out as prize cash given away to multiple attendees through the raffle held after dinner. Not a single one of the winners touched their envelopes of cash. The two $120 winners and the $360 winner each simply pointed to Joe as the person handing out the envelopes walked up to them.

Great event, great charity, great people.

The Rifles of Boomershoot

Below I’ve posted up pictures of some of the interesting rifles seen at Boomershoot 2008

IMG_1752.JPG

I apologize for not having the info on these rifles (caliber, etc.) but there were just so damn many projectile weapons there that trying to remember all that would drive a person insane.

These, I believe, belong to blogger Triggerfinger and his friend.

IMG_1740.JPG

They attended Gene Eacon’s Long Distance Precision Rifle Clinic Friday and Saturday. As I understand it, neither of them had much LDPR experience prior to the LDPR class, and in fact, they just picked these rifles up on the Tuesday before leaving for Orofino. Not to be set back, Gene had them hitting 4 inch Boomers at 600 yards on Sunday.

Now, don’t go thinking that you need a deep-pocket funded boltie to get in on the action at Boomershoot

IMG_1737.JPG

IMG_1739.JPG

Nor do you even need to have a bench or know how to shoot prone, as witnessed by the standing position tripods.

IMG_1732.JPG

IMG_1748.JPG

And then there is the “Spray and Pray” method of hitting boomers. Not very effective, and usually not very fun.

I believe that these fellas, on the other hand, had plenty of fun.
